The Padres are bringing young infielder Luis Urias back onto the active roster, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune (via Twitter). He had been at Triple-A since a brief, early-season stint. The corresponding roster move isn’t yet known.
Many fans would’ve preferred to see Urias spending more time in the majors at an earlier point. Indeed, it came as no small surprise that he did not open the year on the active roster. An offseason call to sign Ian Kinsler combined with the undeniable rise of Fernando Tatis Jr. conspired to force Urias back to the upper minors.
While he scuffled in a brief MLB showing and during his even shorter stint this year, Urias remains a highly touted prospect. Indeed, the 22-year-old has raised his stock with a strong output this year with El Paso. Over 339 plate appearances, he carries a .315/.398/.600 batting line with 19 home runs. Even in the offensively favorable context he’s playing in, that’s a notable power breakout.
Better still, Urias hasn’t been forced to sacrifice other aspects of his game to generate the pop. That .398 OBP? Remarkably, it’s precisely the same mark he posted in each of his two prior minor-league campaigns. The difference is that he has steadily increased his slugging output from .380 to .447 to this year’s eyebrow-raising .600 level.
Entering the season, Urias had accrued 34 days of MLB service. He spent another 13 days up in 2019 before the forthcoming promotion. If he stays up with the San Diego club after joining it tomorrow, Urias can tack on another 72 days down the stretch. In total, then, he cannot finish the present season with no more than 119 total days of service — a number that will almost certainly not be enough to allow him to qualify for an extra season of arbitration eligibility as a Super Two player.
So Kinsler dfa?
If they don’t I can’t understand the move. Bringing him up to sit on the bench? He’ll already be platooning with Garcia at second, which will take AB’s away from him.
Lefty tomorrow
Kinsler needs to kick rocks. Dude is awful.
Now they better actually play him. It’s a pity that Preller and Green are stupid enough to think that pinch-hit appearances and starting once a week are a good way to develop a young hitter.
Hmm.. is this indicative of a trade coming that opens up a 25 man spot?
Kinsler and OF to Phillies for Prospects they can use to get a SP or 3 way with Prospects going to Blue Jays and Stroman/Giles and like Myers to Phils and Sanchez to Padres
The Padres will not be getting a starter with control and upside like Sanchez and getting rid of Wil Myers in the same trade. Nice try trying to sneak it in there tho.
Probably the only way would be to trade for mike leake but no thanks
Blue Jays would be getting like Logan Allen and so on for Sanchez and Phils could us Myers in LF with Harper in CF and Bruce in RF when Healthy and Helsey and Williams as backups and also Knapp and Franco/Kingery/Hernandez either on bench and to Morrison. Rotation Stroman,Arrieta,Nola and so on. Bullpen Robertson when healthy,Neis,Giles and so on. Blue Jays from Phils like Media and so on.
And Philly should agree to that trade because…?
Because they’d be getting stroman/Giles?
All doubtful.
Giving up an Adonis Medina-esque prospect plus more and taking on Myers and Kinsler is not worth Stroman or Giles. Medina plus another decent prospect would probably be enough to get Stroman without getting the Padres involved.
Kinsler not in Deal only Myers to open spot for Urias and Phils don’t need a 2B.
That still doesn’t work for Phillies. They don’t need to take Myers to get that one done.
Yes but need more OF help because none of CF coming back this year other then maybe Quinn.
For the amount of money they would have to pay Myers they could get someone better.
Myers is worth a bag of peanuts, I’d say dump him for nothing and pay half his salary, Jankowski is ready. Kinsler is worth nothing bad moveby AJ,
I say trade Renfore or Reyes,, Strahm, and PTBNL for Boyd or Bauer.or get both for three more players. Then we might actually make .500 and grow from there. I say Bauer and Boyd for five players and we could finish over .500
Right call. Time for him to provide a spark and grow.
Too late to save my fantasy team, but good for the kid. Hopefully the Padres stay patient with him and let him find his rhythm.
Good news. Now what? Trade Yates? Even though I hate the thought of Yates being traded, they will never get a better haul than now. That likely means more prospects. Independent of any Yates trade, what do the Padres need?
Controllable frontline starter.
Controllable midline starter.
Centerfielder (unless Margot is still the answer)
New Manager (debatable)
What do they have to get what they need?
Lots of prospects.
Franmil Reyes (I’d keep Renfroe over Reyes)
Renfroe, Margot
Otherwise, it is mostly going to be the waiting game — waiting for prospects to become their projections.
I think the Pads are likely stuck with Myers. I still have hope something might click in him but he may become a very expensive 4th outfielder / occasional 1B support.
As long as Margot continues to use Greg Garcia bats…. he might be the answer.
I’m down for a new manager. Let’s see if he actually lets Urias play
With young talent you need to play them everyday, so they get used to the speed of the game and a bats
Could be brought as a showcase for a trade to the Indians for Bauer, so the Indians scout can see how good and ready Urias is for the show
Why would the Indians even think of trading Bauer when they are 4 games back of the division lead and he would likely be starting the AL Wild Card game at home if the season ended today?
Cleveland can’t operate like a high revenue club. Bauer is expensive. Trading him with 1.5 years of control for a stronger MLB ready talent package is the best way to maintain a competitive team for the foreseeable future. It’d be a tough trade for fans, but they need younger, controllable players.
Nope. If you are trying to contend now then trading a pitcher of Bauer’s caliber is inexcusable. Two months of him this year will only cost them $4m. That’s less than the Padres will be eating if they DFA Kinsler right now. Having young, MLB ready prospects is nice, but you would take a championship over them any day of the week and twice on sundays. And that championship just isn’t going to happen if they trade Bauer.
Cleveland is 15-21 vs teams over .500. They know that they won’t make it all the way. Bauer will only sign one year deals and will be around 20m in his fourth year through arbitration next year. His value nosedives overall with the subpar year he is having with the increased ERA and bbs. They’d be smart to sell now.
“Bauer will only sign one year deals and will be around 20m in his fourth year through arbitration next year.”
None of that is relevant to this year. Unless you are trying to say that the Indians aren’t contenders in which case it’s time to burn it all down and start from scratch.
“His value nosedives overall with the subpar year he is having with the increased ERA and bbs.”
This is literally his second best season of his career to date.
I think the Pads seem pretty set on Machado-Tatis-Urias.
Machado tatis urias and hosmer
I agree scouts wil be looking at Urias and also Marjon both could be traded to Indians for Bauer., then trade Reyes and Strahm and a prospect for Boyd and we now have our No. 1 and 2 SP
Indians aren’t trading Bauer!
For what it’s worth, they kept Urias down for more than the 50 days needed to push his free agency back. That’s clearly not why they sent him down but we Padres fans will take our silver linings where we can.
Bauer for urias or nah sd fans?
Both teams say no. Only way trading Bauer makes sense for Cleveland is if they get a return that helps them more than Bauer both now and in the future (like the Diamondbacks’ Shelby Miller trade) which just makes no sense for San Diego. And San Diego isn’t trading their 2B of the present and future for a guy who can be a free agent in 1.5 years and only has one great season under his belt.
Agreed.
Myers+Yates+?? For salary relief?
Reyes, yates and Myers to Detroit for Boyd and a middle RP
All these errors at 2b….put the kid in.
Urias is the future, play him. The Padres are close to being a playoff caliber team.
Padres as stated have a long ways to be competitive like two SP’s for sure if they have to trade some hitters and AAA players do it or we’ll never see even a wild card Dodgers are tough
No there not close Vegas please this team won’t even win 75 games this year,
AJ may have the best farm system but the team as is shows no intensity, Somebody needs to start kicking butt in the clubhouse, there season is over all they can do now is dream of a wild card in 2020
Typical myopic Padre fan. How can they be close when 6 games under .500 and lost 89 last year.
“In total, then, he cannot finish the present season with no more than 119 total days of service”
Should say “can finish the present season with no more” or “cannot finish the present season with more.”
Reinforcements!!!!!
Why does everybody bring up service time?
It’s looking stupid bringing up Tatis and Paddack early. What did they accomplish other than losing year of control. Typical brain dead Preller mush move.
