The Orioles have claimed infielder Jose Rondon off waivers from the White Sox, per a club announcement. The corresponding active roster move isn’t yet known, but someone will have to be moved off of the 25-man to make way for the out-of-options Rondon.
It seems possible that this move will connect to another, as-yet-unknown transaction. Rondon would be a possible roster replacement for several of the O’s trade candidates.
The 25-year-old Rondon has struggled quite a bit this year in Chicago, compiling an ugly .197/.265/.282 batting line in 156 trips to the plate. He fared better in a smaller sample last year, and did swat 18 long balls at Triple-A in 2018, but generally does not have an especially promising minor-league track record with the bat. Rondon comes with a reputation for quality glovework, though metrics haven’t been overly impressed to this point.

Thank god…..can the claim Covey too?

Alberto or Villar replacement?
tommyboy2135
I’m saying
FOmeOLS
Why? What purpose does he serve? We already have a quality SS, and multiple guys on the minors who are as good as this guy.
dwilson10
They’re not gonna rush a guy up from the minors to fill holes. This is gonna be the same thing they did with Broxton, let him play and if he does good you keep him if not then designate him and find someone else. It also probably means a trade is close with either Villar or Alberto.
jbigz12
Who is the orioles quality SS? Villar? He’s getting traded in 48 hours or less. Richie Martin is clueless at the plate. Our closest ML infield prospect is Mason Mccoy and he’s still in Bowie. Likely a utility man himself. This is a clear depth move for life post Villar.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
Man, you are ABSOLUTELY punting a season when you pick up a guy slashing .197/.265/.282 and plan to give him a spot of the 25 man roster.
jorge78
I think that was obvious a long time ago…..
ChiSox_Fan
Don’t they have to keep him on the roster now or have to offer him back to the Sox?
tonypro7
No. You’re thinking of the rule 5 draft.
MikeS2
They don;t have to offer him back to the White Sox, but they do have to place him on the 25 man roster because he is out of options. The only way they can send him down is to DFA him, and I don;t think they can DFA him unless he is already on the 25 man roster.
gorav114
Seems like a replacement for Villar or Hanser Alberto but one would think that they would just wait for Ruiz ten days to be up and bring him back up. I see no upside in this unless they are determined to finish worse than Detroit.
shoreoriolesfan
Alberto is hitting close to 300 and playing good D. Idk what ur watching or lack thereof but Hanser isnt going anywhere
jbigz12
Idk if you’re paying attention but the fact that Alberto was playing well would be more of a reason why the abysmally bad orioles would trade him. Let’s be real here. I doubt he gets dealt but Villar definitely will. If Elias had an offer for Alberto he’d go in a split second. He’s a placeholder til we have real prospects ready to contribute at that position.
todd76
They are trying for the #1 draft pick in 2020.
msqboxer
He’s that critical part of your rebuild…need AAAA players to fill out the MLB roster.
ElMagoN9ne
You gotta be playing pretty bad to be fired from the white Sox.
Bryzzo2016
Inconsequential cellar dweller irrelevant franchises picking up each other’s trash gets a mention. Man, this “deadline” has been so news thirsty and anticlimactic to say the least. I guess changing to a hard deadline hasn’t phased the GMs w/ contending teams and clear needs. Vasquez to the Dodgers will end up being the biggest, most impactful deadline move. Book it.
jbigz12
Because player claims aren’t worthy enough for a mention. If only a superstar studded team like the Cubs had claimed Derek Holland. That really would’ve deserved a thesis paper written on it…..
ChiSox_Fan
I can’t wait to see how many trades don’t go through at the last minute cause paper didn’t get submitted by the deadline.
Idioms for Idiots
Hopefully there’s a flurry of activity in the next 23 hours, because the action for this year’s deadline has been sad. I was expecting a lot more with this being a hard deadline. Stroman has been the highlight so far, which tells you how lame it’s been.
I’m sure there will be much better than this in the next 23 hours. God, I hope so.
Bryzzo2016
I think we’re gonna hear a lot of GMs they were caught off guard with how to adjust to the hard deadline and deals were scarce because of it. I hope I’m wrong and the next 20 hours or so are very active, I just don’t see it. I have a feeling the “hard deadline” will be moved to August 15th soon, possibly by next season.
Idioms for Idiots
@Bryzzo2016
I agree, and good point moving the deadline back. There are too many bubble teams right now and moving it to the 15th will create more separation between them. Those teams will know more by then whether or not to make an aggressive push for the WC.
BaseballBrian
You guys saying the O’s don’t have any IF at AAA ready for the show ever hear of Mountcastle?
jbigz12
I’m curious if you know anything about Mountcastle because if you did you’d know he’s either a 1B or a DH in the pros. I’m positive you didn’t read anyone’s comments up there either because all comments were referring to middle infielders which Mountcastle has not been for some time.
There are no internal replacements at SS or 2B that are even close to the big leagues. We have exactly 1 prospect in our top 30 who is a middle infielder above the low A level. That would be mason mccoy who is #25 and likely not a starter.
