The Nationals have placed ace Max Scherzer on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 10) with a mid-back strain. They recalled catcher Spencer Kieboom from Double-A Harrisburg to take Scherzer’s 25-man spot.
Scherzer last pitched a week ago, when he turned in a seven-inning, four-hit performance with 11 strikeouts against no walks in a win over the Royals. It was another in a long line of gems for Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young winner who may be on his way to his fourth such award this season. The 34-year-old has logged a magnificent 2.30 ERA/2.00 FIP with a jaw-dropping 12.6 K/9 against 1.6 BB/9 across 129 1/3 innings so far in 2019. He’s likely the MVP of a Nationals team that has climbed out of the basement over the past several weeks to grab a 1 1/2-game hold over the NL’s top wild-card spot.
Considering Washington’s place in the standings, it obviously can’t afford to go without Scherzer for longer than a minimum IL stint. Scherzer said Friday his injury isn’t a “long-term” one, per Todd Dybas of NBC Sports Washington. As of now, though, the Hall of Fame-caliber workhorse is in line for a rare stay on the shelf. He’ll be out until at least July 20.

And just in the bags will go back down to 500 again
frank_costanza
This is bad for the Nats. A back injury is the worst you could have aside from your arm.
stansfield123
What about your brain? Or if you lose a limb?
lettersandnumbersonly
No, a back injury is far worse. You can function without a brain. Just look at half the posts on here
Matt Galvin
Sellers know?
bencole
Looks like he’s gonna miss 1 start…

Mendoza Line 215

Best news I heard all day
Strike Four
classy!
steelerbravenation
Did it say it was career threatening ????
No it didn’t
It’s 10 days without the best pitcher in baseball
Stop the nonsense everybody in the NL East & WC contenders are all breathing a sigh of relief
Your corny
johnrealtime
Nothing gets me more excited than one of the best players in a sport I love being hurt and not getting to play!
Strike Four
Celebrating any players injury is NOT CLASSY.
One of the worst posters on here, every time….
steelerbravenation
What are you talking bout I barely ever post
Irishblade
But every time you do…
mj-2
As if the Braves need him to be on the IL to win
2-3 against the Braves last year. Sounds more like he’s fortunate to avoid us than we are of him
Dead serious
lettersandnumbersonly
Dead wrong.
wildthing vaughn
Trashy comments from trashy fans. Your sure to win the braves award for fan of the year
steelerbravenation
Blah blah blah
Philliesfan4life
Philly needs to take advantage and pass them while they have the chance.
Wahoo What a Finish!
Disabled List
bhambrave
To those Braves fans applauding Max’s injury, you should be ashamed of yourselves. That’s disgusting.
mj-2
Not only disgusting but also sad to have so little faith in your team.
Who exactly do you all expect to see in the playoffs? A bunch of Andrew Cashners? No you’re going to see good pitching.
Better to be exposed to it now than get smacked in the face in October. You don’t get better avoiding the Scherzers of the league.
steelerbravenation
Your disgusting
Let me guess you would rather not win than to win when they are not at their best
Please stop like I said it doesn’t say it is career or even season ending
You sound ridiculous
bhambrave
No, I’d rather the Braves beat a healthy Scherzer.
johnrealtime
*You’re disgusting*
And yes my correction is meant in more than one way
So it’s suddenly ok to want players to be injured as long as it isn’t career threatening?
Strike Four
steelerbravenation should have been banned a long time ago

Any fan wants any advantage that comes their teams way
You are talkin bout the best pitcher in baseball missing a couple starts
Sign me up for that all day long
Just like if Acuna would go on the DL Nat fans wouldn’t wish ill but I am sure they wouldn’t cry he wasn’t playin
johnrealtime
You’re doing a lot more than not crying
lettersandnumbersonly
And of they went online and cheered an Acuna injury they would be just as deplorable as you. You could always take the high ground and not applaud an injury. Or you can make the choice you did.

I hope you’re not proud of your lack of ethics.
johnrealtime
I’m proud of the commenteriat for coming out against your BS on this one. Do you really want every article about an injury to be filled with people cheering? Some real toxic stuff that I want no part of. You don’t need to be a saint to avoid going down that road
steelerbravenation
No team in baseball wants to see the Nats in a short series with that starting pitching
lettersandnumbersonly
Its retro to the 10th. He’ll miss 1 start and participation in the ASG. He’ll very likely be back just in time to 2 hit the Braves. Yeah, he’ll miss the Phillies series, but the Nats have already passed them and shut them out in the series opener in Philly. The Nats just need to rely on Corbin and Sanchez now to finish it. Max will miss the Baltimore series…. but then so likely will the Orioles.
Had Max not gone on the IL, he might have made a delayed start against the Orioles and missed the Atlanta series. Be careful what you wish for Braves fans. I know you were all thinking how the Marlins were dead in the water, the Mets were fading and the Nationals couldn’t get past their bullpen a month ago. All you had to worry about was… the Phillies……
steelerbravenation
No I been worried bout the Nats all year
Mad Max, Stras & Corbin plus Turner, Soto, Robles, Rendon
All along I thought they would go to the wire with the Braves before the Phillies would
I never in a million years woulda thought that the Nats bullpen woulda been that bad
steelerbravenation
Awww ain’t that sweet
let me guess you guys wake up everyday & dust off your little league participation trophy’s and look in the mirror and say it’s not bout who wins or loses it’s how you play the game
lettersandnumbersonly
May 20th? I think. The Nationals had the 2nd or 3rd most losses in the National League. The pitching coach was changed and they started to get healthy.
Now they have the 3rd best record in the NL and are playing like a team. Only the Dodgers should be feeling comfortable right now
steelerbravenation
If we win the division by 1 game over the Nats I will be disgusting and anything else you wanna call me
lettersandnumbersonly
And if the Braves lose the division by 7 games and miss the playoffs altogether you’ll get exactly what you deserve. Cheers!
steelerbravenation
I deserve a lot worse than that
wildthing vaughn
2nd that
steelerbravenation
Matter of fact I don’t even want them in the WC game
ifonlydetroitcoulddraft
The Tigers would be happy to give you Zimm back lol
Melchez
Hall of Fame? Really?
steelerbravenation
You can actually make an argument against that ???
He is the best pitcher in baseball
lettersandnumbersonly
Yeah…. really. I’ll give you generous odds and bet you any amount of money he makes it.
jdgoat
Easily
Melchez
He’s had 7 excellent years in a row… Very similar to Kershaw. But Kershaw has 4 more years where he was very good. Before Scherzer’s breakout year, he was mediocre. Scherzer is quite a bit older also. Almost 35 and Kershaw just turned 31. The end is near for Max. I just look at the 168 wins… I know wins don’t mean anything, but Morris was criticized because he only had 250 wins, but he finally made it. (3 rings helped) Scherzer would be right near the bottom for wins for a starting pitcher. His numbers are very close to Sandy Koufax who had a 6 year run of complete dominance… but he won 3 World Series and was series MVP twice.
I think Scherzer needs to either have a couple more years of being an ace or win a World Series or two.
Right now, it’s border line.
Sid Bream
Anyone that applauds a player being out injured is an imbecile.
jleve618
I mean, I’m not going to applaud it, but after the farce that was the phils collapse tonight I’m not going to miss him on the mound tomorrow. Still prolly won’t matter.
jleve618
If the nats win a wildcard game can we say they finally won a playoff series?
ahale224
Am I glad the Braves won’t see Scherzer, hell yeah. Would I prefer he missed a few more starts, yes. Am I glad he’s injured? Of course not. It’s a bad look fan reaction every time, that’s done without thinking of athletes as people, but it’s(IMO) not malicious, it’s reactionary fanaticism.
steelerbravenation
Yeah what he said !!!!!!!
