The Mariners have re-started the baseball activities of injured outfielder Mitch Haniger, manager Scott Servais told reporters including MLB.com’s Greg Johns (Twitter link). Doctors gave him the go-ahead to start some light catch and hitting.
Haniger halted an earlier attempt at ramping up when he experienced pain. His is a particularly unpleasant injury, so it’s probably not altogether surprising that the discomfort has continued.
Servais certain did not indicate that Haniger is now on a fast track back. “He still has some issues and is feeling some pain on certain days,” says Servais, “so we have to be careful how fast we go with him.”
It’s obviously disappointing to see the 28-year-old sidelined in this manner, particularly with so little else for the Mariners to cheer for at the moment. But with the M’s well out of contention, Haniger is clearly the one suffering the most. Beyond the physical and mental toll, his ongoing absence has sapped his earning power heading into his first year of arbitration eligibility. He’ll not only command less as an arb-1 player, but will establish a much lower starting point to build off of in the two ensuing years.
It seems there’s still at least some hope that Haniger can make it back to the majors this season. He will surely need to build himself up a bit physically and get comfortable again at game speed. Still, as a position player, Haniger shouldn’t require an especially extensive rehab stint — if and when he’s able to get fully past the pain.

Glad to hear that little Mitch Haniger is doing better

Ha. Your jokes hang low.
Buddy “Bud” Hull
Yes! With Mitch back the Mighty M’s just might be able to win sixty two games this season.

I’m genuinely curious. Did he lose one? Or does he still have both?
dannycore
I would be pretty concerned if he lost one. How would that affect ones testosterone levels? Would he be allowed to take banned testosterone boosters?
excusemeflo
He ruptured a testicle. I’m not a doctor, but I’m pretty doubtful they were able to piece it back together.

I looked it up because I was curious to see what they could do. It actually depends on how bad it was damaged if they can keep it. There is a good but of damage they can repair and of course it was caught very early. Hope all goes well for him.
Danny there are many people that only have one nut. It is mostly caused by cancer. John Kruk is one of the most famous guys that only has one nut. He had cancer while he was still playing. Seems to be doing fine.

Obviously testing is different now from kruks generation. My understanding is that if you lose one you lose testosterone. How would that affect an elite athlete? Maybe not at all. I had a friend that lost one to cancer and had to take a bunch of supplements.

I don’t know it might vary. I had to get half my thyroid in my neck removed. Had a lump and they were not sure if cancerous or not. Testing was inconclusive. It was interesting they removed it left me asleep and tested it. Luckily it was clean. Some men they said needed testosterone supplements after some didn’t. I was lucky on that part too. Like I said before looked it up but didn’t research a lot. Not something I ever want to go through.

Take Mitch back to the ballgame,
Enjoy the cheers of the crowd,
Now he has healed, oh nuts glad he is back,
Stop all the low jokes or he’ll give you a smack!
For it’s root, root root for Mitch Haniger,
If it happens again it’s a shame.
If he has no kids anymore,
Well there’s none to blame!

You must either be really old or a total loner.

Flawless victory.

I hope he goes balls-out upon his return to action. I hope he goes nuts on the basepaths.

You forgot “Balls to the Wall” may as well use all the cliches

Like to see a trade between the Mariners and the Braves where Mitch Haniger and Marco Gonzalez go to Atlanta for Christian Pache, David Toussaint and Joey Wentz. Haniger could continue to rehab with no urgency to assure full recovery. Pache, the ESPN #6 Prospect, is the high upside defensive centerfielder needed at Seattle’s vast ballpark. Toussaint, who is highly touted, has 68 MLB innings over past two years as a starter and reliever. Left-handed pitcher, Joey Wentz is Braves #9 prospect.
Gonzalez could help immediately in the Braves rotation and Haniger could replace or platoon with Markakis when ready to play.

You obviously haven’t looked at Seattle’s minor league system. They are flush with OFers. They will have to trade some if they all turn out.
