While it is becoming increasingly likely that the Mets will be sellers at the deadline, the team won’t be going into a full fire sale. Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz are two of the names that aren’t likely to be going anywhere before the July 31st deadline, as Mike Puma of the New York Post hears from an industry source that the Mets “would likely have to be overwhelmed by a trade proposal” to deal Syndergaard or Matz.
The Mets’ reluctance to move Syndergaard is well-known, despite the fact that at least three teams (the Brewers, Astros and Padres) have shown interest already, and several more would surely join the bidding if the man they call Thor was actually shopped. We haven’t heard much about Matz as a trade candidate this summer, and it’s interesting that he is seemingly in the same boat as the more heralded Syndergaard, though New York would have largely the same reasons to want to keep either pitcher.
Matz has a 4.89 ERA, 2.69 K/BB rate, 46.9% grounder rate, and 8.7 K/9 over 81 innings this season. Despite some pretty decent overall advanced metrics, Matz has been once again undone by problems with the home run ball. After posting a 1.5 HR/9 in 2017-18, that number jumped even higher to a full 2.0 HR/9 in 2019, as 20.9% of all fly balls allowed by Matz have left the yard. Matz’s struggles peaked in June, as a string of poor outings led the Mets to remove him from the rotation, though he is slated to start on July 17 against the Twins.
Now in his fourth season as a regular, Matz has shown some flashes of brilliance for the Mets but injuries and his propensity for the home run ball have limited his value. After generating 2.4 fWAR in his 2016 rookie season, he has been little more than a replacement-level pitcher since, with 1.3 total fWAR over his next 301 2/3 innings. Matz hasn’t approached the type of ace-level ability Syndergaard has shown at his peak, though like Syndergaard, the Mets would arguably be selling low on Matz if they dealt him now.
Matz is in his first year of arbitration eligibility, earning $2.625MM for the season and thus in line for cost-effective salaries in both 2020 and 2021 even if Matz has a breakout next year. Syndergaard also has two-plus years of team control remaining, though at a higher price (he is earning $6MM in 2019). Between the control and the lack of payroll strain caused by either hurler, the Mets don’t have any particular reason to make a trade, especially since neither is pitching particularly well.
Matz the last three years Fangraphs war 0.3, 0.9, 0.1 he’s terrible not sure why they’re so high on him.
Who gives two Focks about those numbers let me look at the ERA. This new wave of statistics isn’t working out so well for these analysts and the new wave of younger managers.
I bet you feel smart
Really? ask the Twins how well it’s working.
I didn’t know hitting home runs was a new stat
Ok….last 3 years
ERA: 6.08, 3.97, 4.89
FIP: 5.05, 4.62, 5.39
WHIP: 1.530, 1.247, 1.481
Innings: 66.2, 154, 81
H/9: 11.2, 7.8, 10.1
HR/9: 1.6, 1.5, 2.0
BB/9: 2.6,, 3.4, 3.2
K/9: 6.5, 8.7, 8.9
Those stats will tell you that outside of his 28 games in 2015-16…Matz has been nothing more than a backend rotation SP
Yes let’s look at ERA the one metric that has dependent factors. That’s sounds like a great idea.
Dudes era is over 4 his last 50 starts.
Lol the Astros and Dodgers and Rays are doing well
They’re not – but they won’t get anything in return that can start every 5 days in 2020…
Matz sucks n is soft n looks like he will cry every time he gets hooked or gives up a long ball. Years ago the Mr Magoo Wilpon said Matz “looked like his pal Sandy Koufax”. This is the owner we have. Although I’ll start next year with him Jake, Thor n I believe it’s 50/50 Wheeler comes here or Atlanta. Dump Matz next year or unless we can truly get something now. Keep Thor!
This is why the Mets will continually suck under this ownership.
Strip it down, sell it off, and rebuild. Be like Houston. NYM aren’t going to compete in the NL East for the near future, better to sell high on everyone not name Alonzo or Mcneil.
Imagine the haul they could get from Atlanta for deGrom, etc.
Can’t wait for Cubs to beat Atlanta in the playoffs. Payback Biatch from 1998
They’d get a haul from any team. That’s the hilarity of their stance. Why does anyone dare talk them down from the ledge?? Just roll out the inflatable pillow, clear out all cars, hide your eyes and wait ’em out.
I feel like this might just be them posturing to get a better deal. Its come out like 5 times now in the last month that the Mets would need to be “overwhelmed” to trade Thor. Sounds like they are the ones bringing this all up to get some trade talk going.
When have the Wilpon’s ever done the right thing? Name the moments in their history when they made a smart move.
It’s because Wilpon want to try and win a ring before he dies. He’s 82 and doesn’t think he would live through the time it takes to do a rebuild (5-6 years ish?).
Our current President was very interested in buying the Mets years ago. Lol. U need a guy like him or Jerry Jones or some billionaire who can buy Wilpon out. Maybe Tony Khan or Vince McMahon! Those guys own to win.
Thor to AEW Confirmed!
Matz for Refsnyder
Mets: Done! We’re overwhelmed!!!
Sorry, had to bring it back for this one…..
Pass.
So they’re trade them then?
Fine. Keep them and let their club control evaporate along with their trade value.
I would almost venture to say that the Marlins are looking better for the future than the Mets. Almost.
Soon. Just be a bit more patient.
Overwhelmed? While posturing is part if negotiating, outside of de Grom, their other starters perhaps just aren’t as good as advertised. Thor certainly has stuff but his inconsistency pitching in a bigger ballpark in a league without a DH might be even worse if he was in the AL East.
DeGrom Traded then?
only for something underwhelming
Luis Urias, Logan Allen, Hudson potts, Blake hunt. Thats two top 100 prospects. And two prospects in the Padres top 30. Ill take one Syndergaard and Edwin Diaz please.
Too much. Pads say no.
Hudson potts is blocked by Machado so no biggie there. Its a good haul for the Mets. Would be dumb to say no.
Mets do not need a middle infielder.
Good I wouldn’t do it as a Mets fan either.
After what they gave up for diaz they can’t sell him for wayyyy less 6 months later
The Mets don’t need a 2b (Urias) and they don’t need a 3b (Potts) and (Hunt) has 4 hrs in the minors. so no way the Mets needs are a real CF,C,SP and RP
A top 20 and a top 70 plus more? Thats way too much for Thor. Remove Urias and that’s more reasonable. That package gets offered for DeGrom.
It seems pretty universal that if you go to the press looking to be “overwhelmed” you really want to sell. My question is: are the Padres bidding against anybody?
I could see someone overwhelming the Mets for Syndergaard, but why would anyone give the Mets an overwhelming offer for Matz?
anything a team offers them is overwhelming so he’ll be gone.
This team is a big major league joke. They’ll probably trade both Matz and Syndergaard for some useless trash. Wheeler will probably also get traded for practically nothing. Don’t know how their fans continue be there for them..
Wilpons are blind and only care about $$. Any owner/GM with half a brain would see they need to trade off big pieces to get more talent. They will piss away Alonso and McNeil’s best years like they’ve done with Degrom.
I wouldn’t want the current Mets “brain trust” making any trades. Clean house first. Let someone who knows what they’re doing make any trades.
Keep Thor and Matz and trade Wheeler. He’s made it clear that he wants to test the free agent market.
I would like to know how many times we’ve seen this “overwhelmed” term used every single year 2 weeks before the deadline. Do you want them to come out and say yeah they’re available for a reasonable package. No duh they’d have to be overwhelmed.
Good idea trying to set a high price on matz but realistically take what you can get and move on. He’s nothing special
So just hold onto Matz and Thor like they did wheeler till his trade bake is basically nothing. They needed to go into rebuild 2 years ago but were to stubborn.
Every year the delay it will just be another 2 years of sucking
Talk about a dumb FO and a blind fan base.
Next year they’ll sign a couple relievers, and maybe a SS and mark my words, Mets fans will be predicting playoffs again.
We aren’t a blind fan base. We know we suck.
This is like the 5th article stating the Mets won’t trade their starters unless they are blown away by the offer.
Weird.
While I think the Mets should trade their pitchers for prospects, I don’t think BVW should be doing it, can’t trust his judgment.
Cardinals, please go get DeGrom
Ugh. Embrace the rebuild or accept years of mediocrity.
This is the part where Met fans will say, “If Matz was not injured, he would have been an ace.”
Frazier Urshela and Florial for Thor to the Yankees make it happen
Why would they do that. Urshela has proven nothing, his success is too short to be taken seriously. Florial has been awful for two straight seasons. Frazier can’t play the field and somehow he is going to go to the league without a DH. Yankees don’t have the farm for it unless they start pushing in Torres.
Urshela doesn’t have value he’s been released by multiple teams and has seen his numbers decline after a hot 40 games. Not to mention he will most likely be dfaed by the Yankees before the start of next season for the 4th time In his career and that they Mets don’t want corner infield or corner outfield
I’m going to make #thingsthatlastedlongerthantheMetscompetitivewindow a thing
mejia baez margot cantillo for syndergaard and sewald
Not enough for syndergaard but if you want to give anything for sewald deal. He’s horrendous I can’t think of why he’s still In the Mets organization let alone another team having interest in him
@king beas if Sewald is such a problem you guys can just release him. You don’t have to trade Thor to get rid of him.
Could any deal include Mickey?
The price on Thor and Matz will continue to go down, Mets would be smart to trade one of them now.
Thor, Wheeler, and Diaz for Mookie Betts
