According to a report from MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro, several scouts were in attendance for Saturday night’s game between the Marlins and Mets, presumably with an interest in observing several Miami relievers.
Though Frisaro did underscore that the participation of New York starter Noah Syndergaard in tonight’s affair likely had much to do with the heavy scouting presence at Marlins Park, he also proposed that a few interesting Miami arms could be of particular interest to competitive clubs.
Entering tonight’s game, the Marlins’ bullpen had posted a collective 2.25 ERA since June 1st, which was tied with the Braves and A’s for the third-best mark in the Majors in that span. It’s difficult to say which of Miami’s bullpen pieces would be most attractive to an acquiring club, but Frisaro points to Austin Brice, Jarlin Garcia and Nick Anderson as possible trade chips.
It is conceivable that an in-the-race team could buy into the 1.88 ERA of the 27-year-old Brice, but only if they were to overlook his slightly less pristine underlying marks, which include a 4.39 xFIP. Jarlin Garcia could make for a solid LOOGY candidate for most teams, but his 6.30 career K/9 indicates that he isn’t the type of arm that typically elicits a ton of trade value.
Anderson could make for the club’s most appealing late-inning trade bait. The 6’5 righty is generating a prodigious number of strikeouts in his first big league campaign (13.85 K/9), turning to a 95-mph fastball in addition to a heavily used curveball. After giving up a decisive two-run dinger to Robinson Cano tonight, Anderson’s ERA sits at 4.46, but FIP (2.99) thinks much more highly of his 2019 work. The 29-year-old, whom Miami acquired from Minnesota this past November, is controllable for five years beyond the 2019 season.
Socrates Curveball
Luxury Tax Teams looking to add bullpen pieces are obviously chasing controlled impact relievers. Anderson fits for the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers & Cubs. Marlins are well positioned to turn Anderson into a couple pieces. Brice it’s hard to bet on the track record and peripherals to justify a big package, but he could fill a depth role.
Jarlin García might be a future Opener Type or multi inning reliever. I could see the Cubs, Nationals and Rockies having interest.
The big prize is clearly Nick Anderson whose had a phenomenal year and is under club control through 2024.
Do Marlins deal from their starting staff? That’s another question. But this group in Miami hasn’t shown a willingness to sell assets are the right times. Now is clearly the time on Anderson, and one could argue on Caleb Smith too.
BlueSkyLA
Garcia and Anderson could be fits for the Dodgers roster, but if the past is any guide they probably won’t be looking for longterm controllable relievers at the deadline. Rentals, more likely.

You are overstating Anderson’s potential.

Jeter will be gifting them to Cashman.
andrewgauldin
Just like Cashman gifted Jeter with Cooper and Smith? How’s the Stanton gift working out in New York?
Jeter has fleeced Cashman. But you don’t hear anything about that! You only hear about the negatives of Jeter as GM.
Melchez
I like what Jeter has done in Miami. The Realmuto trade was a good one… cooper trade was good. Stanton was a win. Yelich deal is looking better with yamamoto being a solid starter and Harrison and Diaz lighting it up at aaa.
Marlins will be a good team soon. They have solid starters, some interesting relievers and some position players coming up.
Rocket32
That narrative is such nonsense. Why would Jeter want to gift anything to Cashman? They aren’t exactly best friends, especially since Jeter’s 2010 contract negotiations when he told Jeter he’d rather have Tulo at SS over him. Stanton forced his way to the Yankees. Miami wanted him and his large contract gone. Stanton had a NTC, meaning he controlled where he would end up.
Trading Stanton to the Yankees was their only real option. People love to call him a gift by looking at what the Yankees gave up, but look at that contract. I wouldn’t call a player with such a large contract a gift unless his name is Mike Trout.

You can’t argue with willfull ignorance homie

let’s look at the complete trade, even though it was two.
Stanton & Mike king for Garrett Cooper, Caleb Smith, Castro, Jose dever, Jorge Guzman.
every player the Marlins got has been putting in solid performances. Castro stats have slipped but he also brings a good mentor/ club house presence for the young roster. All in All the Marlins did not get fleeced and overall it was a good trade. there was a post back on July 1st that broke this down. go read it

LOL.

This will be very interesting.
Conley has great stuff and has had great success but this season seems lost. A team could fix him and probably give up some intriguing fringe prospects to get him. Anderson should net a large haul in a way since FOs are finally buying into stats and his FIP is great and his K9 was leading the league for a while. Romo has been nails as a closer but bad in any other role. Jarlin has shown potential (he made 5 great starts last season and has done well as a bullpen arm). It’s a shame Steck got injured cause he could have been good.
Other issues are Pablo Lopez getting injured. He was on a tear for a bit and could have made trading Richards palpable. Then Urena went down. I have to feel some team could take Urena or Richards and make them better. Both have great stuff but post average numbers. I imagine Alcantara and Smith are off limits. Though I would ride Smith to a blue Chip package. Pablo has such potential. Yammamoto and Gallen could be our 3 and 4 going forward. Sixto is obviously the future Ace. Alcantara at number 2 and Pablo anywhere from 3-5. Could be a great future rotation .
We need hitting. No impact bat besides Isan Diaz waiting. Harrison needs more time. Brinson has to figure it out.we have about 10 guys who can be impact relievers about 2 years away. Can’t win next year so sell them all and build for 2021.
Though as always Hill will find a way to screw it up.
Rich Hill’s Elbow
Tayron Guerrero should also be on the Marlins list of players to trade, his potential alone, not to mention his controllability, could possibly bring back another Yamamoto.
andrewgauldin
I think Tauren can be something special from the pen. But given how Barracloughs and especially Conley’s trade value declined substantially after the deadline last year, its probably a good move to trade anyone who is having a good season in the pen.
MarlinsFanBase
I still am disappointed that the Marlins didn’t get anything in the Ozuna and Yelich and Realmuto and Dee Gordon trades. We sure could use a young catcher and some young pitchers. I am wondering if we will have some young OFs and a young 2B.
