6:25pm: Manager Scott Servais told reporters that Gordon will be out at least a couple of weeks (Twitter link via Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times). An MRI revealed a strain that is worse than a typical Grade 1 strain but not quite a Grade 2 strain.
4:55pm: The Mariners announced on Tuesday that they’ve placed infielder Dee Gordon on the 10-day injured list due to a left quad strain and selected the contract of infielder Tim Lopes from Triple-A Tacoma. In a corresponding 40-man move, right-hander Parker Markel was designated for assignment.
The injury to Gordon makes the already-difficult task of trading him now all the more problematic. Gordon was already a tough sell, given a lackluster .280/.306/.367 batting line and a hefty $19.3MM still owed to him between now and the end of the 2020 season. Add in a quadriceps injury for a player whose entire game is built on speed, and it’s difficult to see much in the way of legitimate interest in Gordon formulating.
Perhaps a contending club would actually be intrigued by the possibility of carrying Gordon on the IL into September, when rosters expand to 28 players, but for that to even be realistic, the Mariners would need to include a substantial amount of cash to offset his remaining salary.
Lopes, 25, is in his second stint with the Seattle organization and will be making his MLB debut this time around. Seattle originally with its sixth-round pick back in 2012, but he was traded to the Blue Jays at the PTBNL in 2016’s Pat Venditte swap. Lopes landed back in Seattle as a minor league free agent this winter and is enjoying a career year in Triple-A. Through 403 trips to the plate, he’s hitting .302/.362/.480 with 10 homers, 30 doubles, two triples and 24 steals (in 33 tries). He’s not in the lineup tonight but should make his debut in the near future.
Markel, 28, made his own MLB debut earlier this season, but he didn’t find much success in his limited audition. The righty tossed 4 2/3 innings but yielded nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits, four walks and a hit batter with three punchouts. Markel has vastly more intriguing numbers in the minors, where he’s posted a 2.04 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. He’s also issued 23 walks in that time (5.9 BB/9), hit two batters and tossed 11 wild pitches. Control is clearly an issue for Markel, but he’s missing bats at a level he’s never come close to previously approaching, which could prompt a different organization to take a look.

I like tim.lopes. Hopes he lopes balls over the left fielder head. Good dude has hit for a decent average w small pop. I just hope he plays. To many call up sit.

If there’s a positive from this terrible season, it is that a lot of players who previously would not have been given a shot have been. Almost all of them have failed but it’s still worth it to see a guy like Austin Nola, who’s seen his brother get paid succeed in the majors after grinding in the minors.

thanks for trading for dee gordon before the angels had a chance to. dip dip thought he did revenge the angels. thanks again!
24TheKid
Gordon was a productive player helping them win 89 wins last season, which was in fact more than the Angels. Also, Gordon was not the main piece of that trade as they also received slot money. While the money may not have worked out, at least actually tried unlike most GM’s. And please, for the sake of everybody on MLBTR, please cut back on your troll attempts on nearly every post, it gets old very fast.
24TheKid
Trolling isn’t actually the right word for what you’ve been doing. But it’s something along the lines of commenting but adding no useful dialogue or information.
Lennon's Dad
Because the Angels and Mariners have an established trading relationship that suggested the deal was a lock?
johnrealtime
Yeah missing the dee gordon bullet has really allowed the angels to shine and succeed
Monkey’s Uncle
Does anyone have any idea if Tim Lopes is related to former longtime big league infielder Davey Lopes? Tim’s page at Baseball Reference doesn’t mention it but they sometimes don’t add info like that until a player makes the majors.
bigwestbaseball
Come on Jerry, trade everybody you can, including Kikuchi , Gonzales, Leake and you will finally get rid of Hernandez (who is a total waste and expensive). Go all in for young controllable players and be a contender in 2022. To keep these players is ridiculous. Get to the playoffs already, don’t stop now! Your team is a joke.
24TheKid
Please tell me your Hernandez trade proposal. Also, he has made the farm go from 30/30 to a top 10 counting this draft and signing period.

He’s just pulling your leg…. I think the bigger point is that the rebuild has to finish fast. There are a lot of people who want to see the Mariners consigned to irrelevance.
If the Seattle hockey club starts off well, they will siphon off media & fan interest for years to come. Based on coverage so far, it looks like the team’s going for a lot of fan outreach and interactivity, examples of which are already in play now in other NHL markets. The Mariners are a running joke on sports radio already.. It’s lining up to be a perfect storm if the M’s cannot fix themselves tout suite.
24TheKid
I’d like to think he’s just pulling my leg, but for some reason most Seattle fans seem to Hernandez has value still as well as thinking that Mariners were trying to win this season and therefore Dipoto is a failure. I do agree with your thoughts on the NHL Seattle though.

Let’s see:
He’s hurt
6.52 ERA
Making $27 million
Fastball touches 90 on occasion
5.32 ERA in his last 52 starts
Offers should be flying in by now!
24TheKid
Does the fastball really touch 90 on occasion though?
warwhatisitgoodfor
Maybe if you squint and view from the perfect angle it might touch 89.5

God must not have wanted to him to play for awhile. After he got done handling that no-hitter and all.
24TheKid
And your attempt to make fun of Dee and other believers is even funnier than you could have predicted because of how much it fails. Maybe Dee was going to suffer a career ending injury in tonight’s game, maybe he was going to get in a car accident driving to the game next week, maybe he was going to tear a hamstring steeling a base.
24TheKid
And also, please don’t take this as me trying to tell you what to believe in.
Oxford Karma
Making light of the fact that everyone thanks god when they achieve something, but they are never like “god made me miss second base when I tried to tag up”. Dee took it one step further by saying that’s why they got no-hit. Could the fact that the Mariners throw a AAAA team out there have had anything to do with it?
24TheKid
For sure, I really doubt that had the Angels been playing the Yankees that the outcome would be the same. But still, if you’re Dee, and have had the things that have happened to him in his life, you probably see things differently than others(mainly talking about his mother and Jose here). But I have no problem with you pointing out whatever you want, and hope you didn’t have too much of a problem with my response.
Oxford Karma
I had no problem with your response. I appreciate that we could have a conversation on here with both people being able to have a covil conversation.
Thanks!
24TheKid
Yeah, great conversation. Thanks!
Oxford Karma
Also a civil one! Covil haha
Basebawl
It’s a shame.. this team has no clue how to utilize Dee Gordon. He’s hitting 9th, and has only scored 26 runs through 77 games played. What on earth??
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
No team is going to hit him leadoff, well the Royals might, but he hasn’t really ever shown an ability to get on base at an above league average clip with the exception of 15 & 17. You could question 15 if you’d like. Look Gordon may be fast, but if you can’t get on base you’re hitting 9th in the AL and 7th-8th in the NL in today’s game, pure and simple.
24TheKid
Yup, exactly this.
Lennon's Dad
Mallex Smith is the reason Gordon bats 9th.
Basebawl
Am I missing something? Just checked out smith’s stats and he’s even less appealing as a leadoff. Just seemed wierd to me with all his speed, when Gordon does get on base he’s rarely scoring. But then again that could be one of the many reasons that this team free fell.
24TheKid
I had typed look at his stats since May, but I double checked. Yeah, he’s not actually good leadoff hitter either. But what the Mariners are trying to do is have a Gordon/Smith back to back and I guess they’d prefer Smith to have an extra at bat than they would Dee.
