The Dodgers, according to an interesting piece of scuttlebutt from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, are “considering” adding a starting pitcher via the trade market, and sources have indicated that Marcus Stroman is among their leading targets. According to this report, the team would transfer a current starter to the bullpen if they acquired someone of Stroman’s ilk, thereby circumventing the trade market’s lack of high-impact relief options.
However, the Dodgers may not be able to get their hands on the diminutive righty–at least not if the Astros have anything to say about the matter. According to a separate tweet from Rosenthal, the Astros are “mounting a push” for a Stroman acquisition. Their eagerness toward such a move is said to be motivated, in part, by a reluctance to meet New York’s asking price for Noah Syndergaard.
At this point, rehashing the relative merits of Stroman seems like a bit of a Sisyphean task: we know that the Toronto-grown pitcher is enjoying a nice 2019 season (3.52 FIP in 124.2 innings); we know, also, that he is rebounding from a somewhat fluky run of poor results in 2018 (5.54 ERA vs. 3.91 FIP in 102.1 innings last year); and, alas, we understand that he is earning an eminently affordable sum of $7.4MM this year, with a fourth and final year of arbitration control remaining in 2020.
What is more germane to the conversation here is the insight offered into the trade deadline strategy of two respectively powerful clubs. The Dodgers, an organization never unwilling to stockpile big league depth, would add Stroman to a largely effective mix of pitchers; on the year, their starters have logged a 4.02 ERA–good enough for ninth in the bigs in this homer-happy 2019. However, adding a durable arm like Stroman, as noted above, would allow them to circuitously improve their bullpen. Kenta Maeda, for one, was an interesting option out of the bullpen last year and could shift there once more; alternatively, the Dodgers could choose to simply rest the powerful-yet-young right arm of one Walker Buehler in a gear-up for the postseason. Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Stroman, and Ross Stripling would certainly make for an extremely intimidating playoff staff.
The Astros, meanwhile, have been involved in rotation-centric trade rumors for quite some time, despite their staff’s fourth-ranked 3.79 collective ERA. This news, as much as anything, gives further credence to the idea that New York is mounting sky-high demands for Syndergaard, and that teams like Houston may begin shifting attention to Stroman as a more cost-friendly alternative. Adding Stroman would obviously be a coup for any postseason-seeking squad, and one has to wonder if the Astros’ strong interest isn’t spurred partly by an interest in 2020. With Gerrit Cole looming on the precipice of free agency, the club may be looking to shore up its potential for this year and beyond.
Given the trading history between the Jays and Astros, I’m betting he lands there before Tuesday.
So the latest is nothing.
MLB Trade Rumors is the name of the site… you expect more?
No but these aren’t even rumours at this point. Just resummarizing.
Did you miss the part before the summation? Ken Rosenthal says the Dodgers are interested in Stroman and may move a starter to the pen. That’s a new rumor. I’m not sure what you’re expecting on this site. They don’t just report finalized trades, but also any rumors. Hence their name. If you don’t like it, go somewhere else. Quit your complaining.

Do not comment again. As in ever.
Deal gets done tonight,
More suitors the merrier. Getting as many teams involved as possible suggests the Jays can drive negotiations. Hope they get this right and get some quality players
Based on there recent history, that’s a big negatory.
Ah yes. Captain Positive rolling on with more nonsense. Bocephinctor to the rescue.
You can spot the guy with a hot take who doesn’t know the difference between ‘there’ and ‘their’.
Thank you for the update Mrs Stripling
Best comment I’ve ever seen on here, was going to say same thing just not nearly as well.
Also, since when is Rich Hill out for the year? And since when do playoff teams have five-man rotations?
From 5 days ago:
Hill is still a month away from possible activation, but it’s encouraging to hear that he’s already beginning to move in a positive direction. There was initial concern that he had suffered a catastrophic injury, but Hill says those fears subsided rather quickly. Now, he’s “anxious to get started again.” It certainly seems as if the near-term outlook is rather optimistic.
Well done.
For what!!??
Huh!!?? Please define…..
I would say this rumor is more likely than the Syndergaard Stroman rumors of earlier today. Both this teams have a history of adding upper level pitching at the trade dead line. whether either will pay the price is open to debate.
Dodgers have Keibert Ruiz, Gavin Lux and Dustin May as prospects to trade. I doubt the have any plans to trade Will Smith. Austin Barnes may come back as a back up catcher. Russell Martin’s age is really showing
They really need to get an elite reliever. Starting Pitching is crowded for the Dodgers.
Lux has to be close to untouchable. Maybe even May as well.
People say this about a bunch of prospects though… but big prospects get moved every year.
I think there are a lot less “untouchable” prospects than people think.
Gavin Lux is a #10 overall prospect who is OPSing 1500 over 100 PA in AAA-OKC. The only player he would be moved for on the Mets is Jacob Degrom.
Not when it comes to the Dodgers. They don’t trade away top prospects. Lux & Ruiz probably aren’t going anywhere.
Maybe the Dodgers ought to consider going all in rather than losing in the playoffs
Shouldn’t the Dodgers be at the point now where they should be trading their top prospects to fill key areas of weakness like their bullpen if that’s what could hold them back from winning the World Series? You’d have to think they don’t want to be the bridesmaid forever
Yes. They can’t go full Buffalo Bills.
Stan Kasten has a long history of running bridesmaid teams. Good enough to keep the revenue flowing in is good enough for some ownership groups.
Stan Kasten is the man.
No. A sustained winner has a better chance at winning a World Series than an all in one or two years team
But the Dodgers already have a very strong core that should be together for the next few years. Their lineup is already among the best in the league and they have a strong trio atop their rotation along with plenty of depth. I don’t see why Lux, May, and Ruiz are viewed as vital parts of the Dodgers future if they can be used to get pieces to win a World Series now
The Dodgers should be in on Giles and Greene best available relievers.
Yeah, I have this weird feeling that they’re going to land Shane Greene in the next couple of days.
I could even see them maybe going out to get Castellanos in a package deal with Greene just to keep him away from the other NL teams. Not that Castellanos is this “big get” or anything but he’s cheap and matches up well *against* the Dodgers lefty-heavy rotation. If they’re smart, they’ll just eliminate the chance altogether.
So, pay extra in prospects to get someone who doesn’t have a fit anywhere on the offense? Seems odd.
If Stroman is “diminutive” LAD will pass. Recall that their great talent evaluator, Lasorda, shipped Pedro Martinez to MONTREAL because he was too small to be a MLB pitcher! 😉
Uh… that was like 25 years ago. What would that have to do with now? And Pedro may not have been on steroids at the start of his career.
Here it comes.
There was bound to be a bidding war for Stroman. Not a lot of sellers. Great season for him. Other starters going down lately. Lots of teams in only wildcard contention not wanting to give up assets for rentals.
Jays should do well here.
This really has turned into a best case scenario for the Blue Jays in terms of how the rest of the starting pitching seller market has unfolded:
– The Giants are now looking like they want to keep Madison Bumgarner for a chance at a wildcard spot; Matt Boyd has had a pretty rough second half of the season and no longer looks like the top-of-the-line starter he was being sold as earlier in the year; and the Indians have seemingly caught the Twins in the AL Central race, so there’s a good chance that the Indians wait until the winter to deal Trevor Bauer.
Unless teams are really hot for Noah Syndergaard or Zack Wheeler, you have to believe Marcus Stroman is the best starter on the market and unlike Syndergaard and Wheeler, he’s actually playing up to that.
He will be traded to the Cardinals
Stroman to the St Louis Cardinals.
for what?
Reyes
Vomit
Stroman to the Astros is the perfect move.
Not only do they get a good starter but then the Yankees are screwed because there is no way in hell the Mutts trade wheeler or Syndergaard there.
He’s the only available SP that I think makes sense for Houston at the current asking prices.
Tucker straight up for Stroman?
straw, tucker and abreu for Smoak and Stroman
I don’t like it, but that’s probably what it would be. That or Beer and Bukauskas for Stroman, which could end up as a better return for TOR in the long run.
Why would the Astros want Smoak?
They have a full roster of position players better than Smoak.
Smoak has been one of the unluckiest hitters in baseball this year. He has a strong track record the last two years, he’s a pending FA, switch hitter. You can do a lot worse than Smoak at 1B
Like Gurriel?
My point is that Tucker is stuck at AAA despite having another MVP level season
The Astros are DFAing position players because they have no room for them.
Why in the world would they trade for another one?
Unless he’s a catcher.
Straw isn’t going anywhere (although I think he would be a great trade chip)
If the team was going to trade him, they would have optioned him down and kept Tony Kemp
Straw isn’t going anywhere either. The Astros just let go of two other guys in favor of him.
because Smoak has proven he can hit at this level and tucks can’t? because a switch hitting bench bat come playoff time is something most teams would love. because Correa is one post game massage away from missing the playoffs?
A DH and a reliever for Stroman lol no do better
Stroman to the Dodgers could be a devastating acquisition
Where would he line up in that rotation ????
3 or 4 ???
That would be a big move and they have the prospect capital to go bigger with Giles & Hudson to help out their bullpen
I hope this doesn’t happen could be a game changer
Sure. May, Ruiz and a couple prospects near the middle of the dodgers top 30 and the Dodgers can have all three of them.
Having Keibert with Jansen around is kind of redundant. Probably better to focus elsewhere
not if you dh one to keep them fresh.
Unless you carry a 3rd catcher regularly DHing your backup catcher is risky and a bad idea. If something happens to your catcher you have nobody to step in without forcing the pitcher into the lineup. MLB ready catcher is one thing Jays don’t need, and they can hold off for a better fit
Someone ought to take a chance on Ivan Nova.
Nova has been hot since the ASG.
Pitching another gem vs.Twins tonight.
Back to Yanks
I’d be a seller if I were Toronto. Giles should net something nice and Stroman should get a bunch. Toronto is well situated for the future. They target pitching in the draft/IBM and sign Stroman, then Syndergard. Pirates should trade Vasquez.
Toronto is pretty obviously a seller lol
I heard a rumor…(I heard a rumor)… they say you’ve got a broken heart
Look at all these rumours. They’re surrounding me every day….
Jays are in a good position. I sincerely hope Ross the wannabe Boss gets this done right. They have serious assets topped by Stro to fast forward this rebuild.
I believe as of next year they only have 3 contracts on the books (including Tulo) that arent controlled players. As near a clean, fresh slate as can be possible.
You’re right about their contract situation. And one of those contracts is Gurriel Jr. who’s on pace to be a 2 WAR player this year at $3million or so.
They have lots on payroll room going forward…. but with corporate ownership it’s always uncertain if they will take advantage of it. Hopefully the massive fan support they had in 2015-16 and the Raps recent run shows ownership how lucrative a winner can be.
It’ll be really interesting to see if the Jays even operate with league average payrolls for the next 3-4 years.
They’re going to need to spend 60 million to get to the $100,000,000 mark lol
Trading Stroman I would hope included another sweetener to the deal (i.e Galvis, Hernandez, maybe Giles but I’d move him with Aaron Sanchez as the centerpiece of course. Sanchez cannot be still in Toronto opening day 2020!).
In a deal involving Stroman (Jays giving up its ace, age 28 in his prime and under control for at least another season or two) Toronto needs at least a top stud corner OF and a couple young arms — at least one top end guy.
May, Gonsolin and DJ Peters for Stroman. Jays get 2 pitchers and a good RF/LF. May he steps in the rotation right away, I fell like Gonsolin is just about MLB ready if not already and Peters seems to be someone like Gurriel but with a better eye for walking. Thoughts?
I also don’t see the pitching we need in the Astros farm. So unless it’s Yordon Alveraz (which it won’t be) I do t like it. Yankees, Twins, Braves and Ray interest me more as far as a better fit for the jays
May/Gonsolin certainly keep you on the phone. I think the Jays can do better than Peters
OF’s/Pitchers Toronto must get in return in any Stroman deal..
Twins: OF- Alex Kiriloff or Trevor Larnach
P- Graterol, Littel, Duran or Balazovic (Canadian kid)
Astros:
OF- Kyle Tucker, Jordan Brewer or Yordan Alvarez (Jays really have no faith in Tellez at 1b)
P- James, Martin or Bukauskas.
Padres:
OF- Ornelas (but not much else)
P- mostly top lefties Gore, Morejon and Allen
— don’t see the Padres as a good fit for Toronto’s needs!!!
Yankees: Any deal with them must include Gleyber Torres as reported by New York papers or Deivi Garcia.
Brewers: Milwaukee has a decent collection of raw power OF but none of them project to be above average defenders. Only Corey Ray seems to be a nice return but the Brewers have zero pitching to help the big club so I doubt they’d have much in the system. Although I think Stroman in Milwaukee would be a great fit for him and I think he likes to swing the bat when given the chance!
My top choices for Stroman to land next week:
1- Minnesota
2- Milwaukee
3- Houston
4- NY Yankees
5- San Diego
However I hope to see him make his final start in a jays uniform Tuesday in KC.
I like the twins for there pieces to. I fell like you ask is a little high tho (as a jays fan)
The trade has to have Graterol and Balazovic, then Larnich & another piece, or Kirilloff
The jays gotta ask high. Marcus Stroman is just 28 in his prime and still should be a good 1-2 punch for at least another 3-5 years on a playoff team.
They don’t really need to trade him but they should. Smart baseball business for a team in total rebuild from scratch b
I want one of those OF and 2 of those pitchers. Lol. Not all of them obviously!
Brad your offers are whack
The Astros have a glut of players who will need to put on the 40 man roster this winter or exposed to the rule 5 draft.
Even if the Astros refuse to deal Tucker or Whitley they can offer a plethora of potential starters.
Let’s say the Jays are asking for 2 pitchers and 2 outfielders
#8 Abreu, #10 Ivey, Derek Fisher, #20 Ronnie Dawson, and add Tony Kemp in exchange for keeping the top 7 prospects off the table.
This is very close to what the Astros gave for Garrit Cole for two full years and a better track record. This is a realistic haul though for the Jays….much more realistic than some of the nonsensical scenarios suggested by other posters. 1 1/2 years of Marcus Stroman does not warrant giving up Kyle Tucker. 26 homers, 74 RBIs in AAA right now after a poor first month. And one of the youngest in the PCL at 22
AAA is a joke right now, the PCL especially. Unprecedented HR totals render stats there pretty useless.
The Jays are going to get some quality talent for Stroman. I certainly hope the Jays aren’t interested in trading a quarter for 5 nickels like you’re proposing. Whatever team gets Stroman is going to be giving up some significant equity
Marcus stroman Al Cy candidate. Kyle tucker AAA player. yep certainly a crazy ask.
I appreciate your joke. It was a good one. Its not often that I get that good of a laugh so thank you.
Gleyber Torres.. lmao. Im sure the Jays asked for him but they have to know there is no chance in hell they are getting him..
the Jays traded Stroman to the Twins i would love a package built around Graterol or Balazovich as the headliner…i would then ask for Trevor Lanarch (of,#97overall prospect) and then Jhoan Duran who according to some scouts believe could be the next big high ceiling arm in the Twins system after Brusdar Graterol.
Would they give up that package for just Stroman i dont know but that would be my ask and if needed a bullpen arm give them Hudson as well? I dont know if i include Giles with Stroman for that package but possibly as i think you have 2 possible elite arms and a very high end outfielder
I never thought about Alvarez with James or Martin from Houston I would definitely consider that as option 2 if the twins balked
Alverez will not be traded. He’s the ROY.
Guess I forgot about the Braves and the Alex Anthopoulos connection…
Top 2 prospects are both OF’s Pache and Waters so any deal starts with one of those two!
Yesterday must’ve been a sad day when you realized Stroman’s true value was Kay and Woods-Richardson, wasn’t it Brad?
The dodgers are really willing to go far to manipulate maeda’s contracr huh?
I wonder if the jays could get Jesus Sanchez or Matt liberatore from the rays for giles
Jesus Sanchez is bleh. Has zero control of the strike zone. Liberatore would be interesting, McClanahan as well. I mean shoot the Rays have ~20 interesting prospects to choose from
Maybe I read this wrong, but the Dodgers starters have the best ERA in baseball at 2.98, not 9th at 4.08.
From The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (paid subscription). Ooppsy, wrong again..
