This has been an up-and-down season for the Rockies, who began 3-12, climbed all the way to 40-34 and have since nosedived to 46-50. The multiple rotten stretches the Rockies have stumbled through this year may prevent them from earning a third straight playoff berth, but for now, they’re a still-manageable 3 1/2 games out of wild-card position in the jam-packed National League. However, that doesn’t seem to be of much solace to general manager Jeff Bridich, who admitted to Thomas Harding of MLB.com that the Rockies are playing “really bad baseball.” Bridich added that the Rockies’ horrid performance over the past several weeks could complicate matters leading up to the July 31 trade deadline.
“It all needs addressing,” Bridich said of his roster, though he doesn’t see “any quick fixes” and suggested he’s not gearing up to purchase outside help right now. While Harding notes Bridich bought at the previous two deadlines, which helped the team get to the postseason in each case, the GM was frank in saying this year “feels different” compared to those seasons.
“Just watch us play,” Bridich said. “We get a good outing from our starter and we’ll find a way to lose that game through offense or the bullpen or defense. We’ll get a lot of offense one game and our bullpen will come blow it or defense will blow it, or combine. There’s a different way each night, it seems. When that’s your reality in all parts of your team, it’s a tough go to fix all that in one small time period of the year.”
Problems are indeed prevalent for the Rockies. Despite having to pitch half its season at Coors Field, Colorado’s staff was legitimately effective last year. Among their starters, Kyle Freeland finished fourth in NL Cy Young voting, German Marquez was a strikeout machine, and Tyler Anderson, Jon Gray and Antonio Senzatela offered fine complementary performances. This year, with the exception of Gray, everyone from that group has taken noticeable steps back. Meanwhile, the Rockies’ bullpen has felt the absence of Adam Ottavino, who signed with the Yankees in the offseason, and fellow veterans Wade Davis and Seunghwan Oh (whose season is now over because of an elbow injury) have been dreadful. The bullpen’s lone bright spot over a large sample of work has been Scott Oberg, who has posted a 1.35 ERA/3.06 FIP in 46 2/3 frames.
As Bridich suggested, the Rockies’ position player group has also fallen flat. Despite the presences of Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story, Charlie Blackmon and David Dahl, the unit’s the fifth worst in the league by fWAR (5.2). Colorado has scored the majors’ fourth-most runs (527), but according to park-adjusted metric wRC+ (85), only five offenses have been worse. In the field, the club has been run-of-the-mill at best in errors (15th), Defensive Runs Saved (20th) and Ultimate Zone Rating (22nd).
Thanks to the Rockies’ team-wide issues, they may be more inclined to sell or stand pat than buy in the next two weeks. The trouble is, if the team wants to ship players out, it doesn’t seem to have a lot of realistic trade chips. Oh, catcher Chris Iannetta and infielder Mark Reynolds are the Rockies’ only impending free agents, but there’s little to no trade value in any of those cases. While the Rockies would likely jump at the chance to get any of the big contracts of Davis, Ian Desmond, Jake McGee and Bryan Shaw off their books, that’s not happening. Daniel Murphy has been hot of late, though he’s a soon-to-be 35-year-old with almost $18MM in guaranteed money left on his contract through 2020.
On the other hand, Story – who has two years of arbitration eligibility left after this one – would bring back a haul in a trade. But it’s almost impossible to imagine the Rockies dealing the 26-year-old this summer, especially considering they’d like to extend him. Gray and Oberg, who also come with arbitration control through 2021, would be easier to give up than Story. However, it would take a “truly special” return for the team to trade either of those right-handers, according to Harding.

I disagree with one thing. I believe Jake McGee has done enough that a contender may want to take him on. Especially a contender that might not make it this year, but will still have a need next year as well. Maybe the Cardinals, Nationals, or Rangers. I mean, he is a left handed reliever that is having a very good year and the money owed him is not THAT much.
Shaw has had a bit of a bounce back as well, but I don’t think it has been enough.
What the Rockies really need to do is quit trying to be the Cubs and have everyone play every position. Flexibility is nice, but it shouldn’t be forced. Instead of moving the back up first baseman to 2B or the 3rd string 2B to back up CF or signing a CF to play 1B or signing a 2B to play 1B when you move that guy back to CF, maybe try and get someone to play a position they have played before. They need to choose either Hampson or McMahon as a 2B and trade the other one.
Maybe no major moves can be made, but a couple of minor moves can make this team much better.
Banesays
Maybe the Cubs will offer Contreras for McGee. Bahaha
DarkSide830
if they eat some money then its certianly possible. he was fire before struggling in COL, and looks to have been a but better this year.
Melchez
McGee has a road era under 1. Same with Davis. Rockies probably wouldnt get much in return, but they might be able to get out from under them.
Davis to the nationals and McGee to the twins?
JoeBrady
I didn’t understand some of these moves for several years. They had Dickerson & Dahl. Then they traded away Dickerson, so they could sign a more expensive, and less-talented player like Parra. So they basically paid $26M to cover a hole that never existed.
Then they paid SS Desmond $70M, even though they had Story. So the next had to be to force him into a different position where his bat doesn’t play, and his limited glove loses value.
Melchez
Their big need has always been pitching… I expected them to trade some offense for pitching. Instead they have to pay over market for these guys.
I also never understood the signing of desmond… I kind of thought they had a major deal for Story for a top pitcher. But no.
What kind of pitchers have success at Coors? Power arms? Slider pitchers? Ground ball pitchers? Is there a pitcher that has success at Coors?
jb19
Short answer no. But seems like power pitchers would be the best type of pitcher. It’s a well known fact that balls don’t break as much in altitude, so I would imagine fastball/change up/breaking pitch with the first two being of greater importance would play best at Coors. But many have tried and the only one that comes to mind that had a good, if not great year, was Ubaldo Jimenez in the earlier part of this decade… I don’t keep up w the Rockies, so I may have missed better years front SPs. Outside of Freeland from last year of course.
hiflew
In fairness, they did get Marquez and McGee for Dickerson. Pitching was needed far more than an OF at the time.
I hated the Parra and Desmond signings from day 1 so I have no argument there, although Desmond was not a SS when he signed. He played CF with the Rangers for a season before the Rox signed him. But your point remains the same and I agree with it.
greens19678
I agree… Even though Dickerson is a good player, getting the return of Marquez and McGee at time was a good trade. Jake has been a disappointment, but this trade is def not one of the reasons why I’m pissed at Bridich!
Hiflew mentioned a couple signings (Parra & Desmond) which were not only horrible signings but also handcuffed the organization fincially causing them to make even more horrible decisions!
SabrinasDaddy
I loathe watching baseball in that Stadium; Cincinnati a close second. How can any GM expect their pitching staff to even be league-average in Colorado. Raze it! Move on! This might be my tequila talking…
jdgoat
What don’t you like about those stadiums? I think each of those are on my bucket list.
Steezy
Both teams haven’t ever been able to build a stable staff in those stadiums because they allow too many runs. He’s saying aid the pitchers somehow and be done with it.
SecsSeksSecks
This is insane. The combination of the single trade deadline and more teams technically in the race is going to confuse a lot of teams and less trades that should happen will be made as a result. Kudos to the Rox for recognizing that they will not win a championship this year. Here we are with 12 other teams claiming they should be buyers because they have a shot. This includes teams like the Pirates and Reds who are both multiple games behind the Rox. If the Rox are multiple games ahead of you but are out, how can you not be out? The Reds fans in particular are putting so much faith into their recent hot streak. Rockies fans know better than anyone that hot streaks don’t matter until at least September when it comes to teams that are not in line for a playoff spot. The Reds are in last place. The most recent team to win a championship after being in last place during the month of July is referred to as “The Miracle Team.” That is because it only happened once in the history of baseball. That occurred over a century ago. That’s right Reds and Giants fans. If your team wins it this year they will be the first team to pull off that feat since 1914. It won’t happen. It was only able to happen in 1914 because it was a 5 team league. No one cares if your only 5 1/2 games out. You would still have to climb over at least 8 teams just to have a chance. Go buy a lottery ticket at your local gas station. You stand a better chance of becoming a millionaire this weekend. At least then you would only be losing a dollar and not blowing up any real chance your team had of competing next season. I’m not a snob but I think it’s obvious that the writing is on the wall. It will almost definitely be a Twins/Astros/Yankees/Dodgers/Braves championship this year. I could see the Rays/RedSox/Cubs/Brewers/Nationals/ maybe if I’m lying Phillies too going for it this year to see if they can catch magic in a bottle. Any other team pretending they have a chance is either lying to their fans or just plain stupid. Either way no one should support them.
its_happening
I would have rather kept the 2nd deadline and moved it up to Aug 15.
andyg37
The further back the deadline goes, the less value rental players have though
its_happening
I could care less.
SFGiants74
The Giants were not in last place during the month of July, considering it is still July. So, what are you talking about. The Rockies and Padres were overly hyped.
SFGiants74
A 2.5 game deficit is not that difficult to overcome over 66 games.
tdtd1515
August 24, 2011. While not in last place the Cardinals were 10.5 games out of the wild card. To claim they can’t pull out of the cellar might be a little presumptuous. The Reds statistically have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball in the NL. I don’t think most last place teams can make that claim. So yes, while there are a lot of teams to jump, they have a lot of time to do it and with a few pieces added in they could make a run. So lighten up Francis.
its_happening
Rockies not dominating at home and are below .500 on the road. Being 2-10 in July also doesn’t help.
GarryHarris
I think CF Kevin Pillar would shore that lost OF defense the Rox put out there everyday. I have no idea how to judge their pitching. The statistics are deceiving.
bush1
The Ian Desmond signing to play first base was one of the more idiotic signings I’ve seen. In addition to way over paying Desmond, the Rod has to forfeit the 11th pick in the draft that year. Just so dumb…
DarkSide830
a ha, a realist! always good to see an executive willing to say something truthfully bad about their team.
TNE
Bud Black is at it again. It was only a matter of time.
SanDiegoTom
Black has to be on the hot seat, He is mediocre at best
hiflew
He got them to the playoffs 2 years in a row for the first time in franchise history and you think he is on the hot seat less than a year later? Black is the best manager the Rockies have ever had (including the likely HOFer Jim Leyland), even if he has made a few questionable decisions recently.
SanDiegoTom
Sometimes, even a blind squirrel finds a nut.
YankeesBleacherCreature
The Rockies are the most confusing franchise as far as having a clear direction they want to go every year. A complete teardown/rebuild is in order a la Marlins.
helton17
They’re having a bad season but let’s not act like it’s so bad that they should trade Nolan, Story, Dahl, Blackmon, etc. Big cold streaks combined with a few hot streaks will usually bring a .500 season which it looks like the Rockies will plateau at this year.
greens19678
You’re right about that. However, those should be the only 4 (and maybe Oberg) that should not be on the block. In my opinion, if the right deal is there for anyone else, they need to take it. Plus, if ANY deal is there for any one of the players with the horrible contracts (Desmond, numerous relievers, etc) they need to ship them period!
hiflew
The Rockies will never do a complete tear down like the Marlins. The owner has all but publicly vilified the Marlins for doing that multiple times. He has never specifically said it, but it has been implied heavily at times.
greens19678
Over Bridich’s tenure, he has made several good trades & signings. However, I’m so pissed about 2 non (very reasonable & cheap) signings he didn’t make & didn’t even offer, I believe he’s got to go.
The fact he handcuffed the club to the point they didn’t even offer contracts to DJ & Otto has hurt the club so bad we’re not only paying for it this season, its likely to hurt us for several seasons to come (due to the huge contracts we’re locked into w/ under performing older players)! It’s one thing if DJ & Otto were due to get huge contracts, but that just wasn’t the case. The fact they’re making a combined $21 million a year (DJ- $12 million on a 2 year, $24 million contract & Otto- $9 million on a 3 year, $27 million contract) is almost a slap in the face.
We have all these mediocre, at best, relievers making massive amounts of money (thanks to you, Jeffy) & Otto’s making freaking $9 million per year for the damn Yankees!!! I get Otto’s from Brooklyn & might have signed w/ the Yankees anyway, but he liked playing Colorado. Plus, Jeff didn’t even offer him a contract!!!
I also get we had a young upcoming 2nd basemen in McMahon, but DJ is a proven commodity. As hot as Murph has been, I’d still rather have OUR guy who’s brought us numerous All-Star/batting champ/Gold Gloves/Defensive POY’s. OUR guy who Jeff betrayed by not offering him a DIME is now the possible future AL MVP playing 1st base & 2nd base for the NEW YORK YANKEES!!! And we wonder why we’ve not only never won a World Series but not even a damn NL West title!!!
To not even offer these 2 contracts is an unforgivable sin!!! And now we’re paying for it! Plus, in my opinion, we’ll continue to pay for it years down the road! DJ’s proven he can be a very serviceable 1st basemen as well as 2nd basemen, so the McMahon point is moot. Also, Otto’s proven he had been trending in the right direction over the last couple years versus the other (much higher paid & older relievers) have been trending in the other direction.
So, I’m sorry Jeff, you’ve done some good things, but you’ve screwed up too bad. Time to go, bro! Well, at least we have Nolan locked in long term!
PS… Sorry for the long post. This just makes me mad because our team keeps repeating the same BS for years. Then, they wonder why we can never get over the hump. Ridiculous!
