The Indians have acquired righty Phil Maton from the Padres, per a club announcement. International bonus poll space is headed to San Diego in the deal.
In other moves, the Friars announced that that they have selected the contract of righty Andres Munoz. That explains the need to free a 40-man roster. Catcher Austin Allen is also coming to the majors, with backstop Austin Hedges and lefty Eric Lauer being moved to the bereavement list.
Maton, 26, has appeared at the MLB level in each of the past three seasons. Through 114 2/3 total innings, he carries a meager 5.02 ERA — a mark that has skyrocketed this year, in particular.
That said, there are still reasons for some optimism. Maton has shown an ability to generate swings and misses (13.3% for his career). And he has dominated at Triple-A in recent years.
For the Indians, it was easy to take a shot and add some depth. Righty Cody Anderson won’t be returning to action this year anyway. He was bumped to the 60-day injured list to create roster space.
On the Friars’ side of the deal, it’ll be interesting to see what the team has in Munoz. The live-armed 20-year-old has shown intriguing K/BB numbers in the upper minors this year. Through 35 2/3 innings, split about evenly between Double-A and Triple-A, he owns a 3.03 ERA with 58 strikeouts and 18 free passes.

See ya Phil. Thanks for giving up all those HRs. Its been real
excusemeflo
You could probably do way better
DarkSide830
no, but Munoz is astronomically better
Matt Galvin
Not Bauer going to Padres or Yates or an OF going to Indians
nymetsking
Thanks for clarifying. We weren’t sure.
Henry Silvestre
good move by AJP..keep adding to that Farm..intl pool $$ after signing 4 of top 30 already is big
bleacherbum
Wisler
Maton
Now only need to get rid of Wieck, Erlin and every other mediocre arm they Keep shuttling between AAA and SD.
lowtalker1
Don’t forget about stock
nypadre66
Wouldn’t that include everyone except Yates, Lauer, Paddack and Lucchesi? They won’t have anyone left in San Diego or El Paso if you get rid of all the mediocre pitchers.
bleacherbum
Going to the game tonight, excited to see Munoz and all of the hype surrounded around his velocity. Expecting to see triple digits multiple times tonight if he enters.
Jeff Zanghi
Just don’t wear sweatpants… might be hard to hide your – you know what!
bleacherbum
Lol
On a serious note, the Padres bullpen got a little better since the break.
Adding Munoz and Strahm while removing Maton is going to make things better in my opinion. Castillo is on a rehab assignment, he will hopefully be another very soon.
LosPobres1904
LuL but seriously he throws 100?
bbatardo
Finally lol everytime he came in the game you knew he was giving up a run or 2. Not sure what happened to him.. came up doing well but fell apart
Smelly_Cobb
I would yell at the tv everytime I saw Maton warming up. The only thing that made me yell louder at the tv…..Frickin’ Jesse Agler in the booth
lowtalker1
How the f where hey able to trade maton? They even got money for him. Wow! Thank you Indians. Can we interest you in a brad weick ?
CKinSTL
Have you been following trades involving pitchers from the Padres going to the Indians? I’ve never seen the guy pitch but you might consider celebrating with caution, haha.
lowtalker1
Cimber and hand were legit here
That’s nothing
There is only one they got away for a win now move in 2006.
Maton is dead weight. After his injury he just had a flat 90mph fast ball
Want weick too?
LosPobres1904
Ahem…Myers take him
joebugdud
Tribe sure loves the Pads bullpen. Hand and Cimber, now Maton… wonder when Balsley will start turning crap into gold some more (we need it!)
Show Me Your Tatis
Not that Maton is any good but why him over Pirela?
layventsky
The Indians have a use for Maton, i.e. bullpen depth with options remaining. Such is not the case with Pirela, as they already have Freeman, Velazquez, Moroff, etc. and don’t really need yet another utility player.
Kwflanne
How did the padres receive ANYTHING in return for Maton?!?! I don’t care if it was five dollars in international money… that’s still a steal! Indians fans, good luck. Maton looks like he’s on the verge of crying every single time he gets on the mound
solaris602
What concerns me most about this deal is the real possibility that this will be Cleveland’s most notable deadline addition. Tribe fans know exactly what I’m talking about.
lfrient1
I understand what you mean, but…..don’t forget that SOMETIMES the best trades are the ones a team does NOT make. In other words, it is better to decide against some trades rather than agreeing to a trade that most likely will harm your team.
lowtalker1
maybe a trade of Bauer
lfrient1
It appears that less gasoline will be sold in San Diego now, and more will be sold in Columbus.
lfrient1
Columbus is the AAA team where Matson will be assigned.
Polish Hammer
They finally got him? Awesome!!! I saw suggestions here from the Padres faithful that had him and a bag of balls going for Bauer, Kluber and Lindor. So did 5hey give all 3 up?
Wolverines2
Padres got the best of this deal by getting him off of their roster, trust me.
sufferforsnakes
You Padres fans sure do hate a lot of your team’s players.
Polish Hammer
Just on their way out of town, while they still have them they’re all the greatest and have tremendous trade value.
jdgoat
They’ve been trashing Pirela, the relievers, Myers, etc for years now so there goes that theory.
jbigz12
Lol. Exactly JD. I can’t imagine why they’d hate a guy with an ERA over 7
sufferforsnakes
Exactly, Hammer.
kingkooba
Funny many of those player who we hated got traded to Cleveland (minus Hand and Kluber).
sufferforsnakes
Many?
LosPobres1904
Myers and his contract take him for free
VegasSDfan
Theres 2 others that still need to go asap and then the Padres are serious
kenneth cole
Hand Cimber and Maton! Indians love padres relievers
sufferforsnakes
And we love making the post season, while Padres fans sit at home and talk up their next great wave of prospects……who end up leaving Padres fans sitting at home during the next post season.
Wolverines2
Oh man…where is this coming from buddy? Your division is a joke, you know that right? For where the 2 teams are, the trade last year made sense. Man do I remember a lot of upset Indians fans when it happened though. I think Cleveland got the better end so far. Not sure why we are connecting the 2 trades. One was a top shelf reliever for a high end prospect. The other is a terrible relief pitcher for some cash…For Matons sake, I hope he does great for you. I’m very glad he is gone. Please stay tuned though because if you do not think the Padres have a bright future then you are wrong. Nobody ever thought Maton was a prospect and Hand we got for free and sent to you for Mejia. Your facts are off. Focus on your own bright future. I’m sure Lindor will be sticking around a long time…
Polish Hammer
Actually, not too many missed Mejia, an overrated prospect that couldn’t play the position in the majors and pissed and moaned about playing elsewhere to get his bat in the lineup. That he couldn’t fit into the easiest locker room and get along with the best players managers out there says a lot. Good luck with him!
And so what if Lindor doesn’t resign, they drafted and developed him great and got some great years out of him. They could open up the checkbook like the Padres did for Manny but they’re too smart for that. Too smart to sink so much into one guy and not have enough $$ left over to put proven talent around him and if you think he’ll see that whole contract in SD and live up to it you’re crazy.
sufferforsnakes
Where’s it coming from? From facts.
Wolverines2
Oh damn!!! I feel stupid!!!
Wolverines2
Perfect. Let’s check in in a few years and see how things shake out. You obviously know a lot more about everything than I do. Enjoy the weather in your trash city while you are at it since you decided to start throwing insults. The proble. with the argument that you are making is that you are putting a former era’s salary limitations on the current system. Manny has just turned turned 27. By the time he is done with his contract, players like Lindor and Tatis will be on larger contracts. It is a large contract but he’s good and young and the team has a lot more to spend than they used to. That is a fact by the way. Not sure where all of the anger started with you guys but I’m pretty happy with where the Padres are going. Not asking for your permission to be pleased with the direction. Thanks again however for your Nostradamus-like predictions of future success as well as summary of what Cleveland fans thought about the Hand trade. Just going off of what I read a year ago on this site.
Polish Hammer
Trash city? Nice, now go eatadick in your beautiful city that will never win a title in anything.
Polish Hammer
And the division is so bad you’d only be 12.5 games out of first place…
Wolverines2
hahaha. will do.
Wolverines2
no we would not of we played the competition that you do.
Show Me Your Tatis
@Polish Hammer yes Manny will see that whole contract in SD! He has a full NTC and if someone else wanted to pay him all that money they would have when he was a FA.
Polish Hammer
Giancarlo Stanton had one too genius
advplee
Braves beat the Padres! Munoz was electric. Even as a Braves fan, was cool watching his MLB debut
hoosierhysteria
Oh happy day. Maton is gone. That kid gets bombed with the 92 straight ball. Now put Myers on the next Greyhound bus.
Bigfigga1920
A post earlier said be careful what you wish for regarding trading a player (Padres) to the Indians who you think sucks because of history of doing such thing. The poster responded Brad Hand and Adam Cimber But i’d like to go back a little ways further. Back in 2010 the Padres shipped out a guy who they gave up on rather quickly to the Indians, for basically nothing in a 3 team deal with the Cardinals.
The name? Corey Kluber.
