The Giants will select corner infielder Zach Green from Triple-A Sacramento prior to Sunday’s game, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle tweets. The team will need to make corresponding 40-man moves to create space for Green and the promotion of left-hander Conner Menez.
Green entered the professional ranks as a third-round pick of the Phillies in 2012, but the Northern California native left the organization as a free agent last offseason to sign with the Giants. Since then, the right-handed 25-year-old has slashed an outstanding .302/.402/.698 with 23 home runs in 264 plate appearances. Even in the offense-driven Pacific Coast League, Green’s production has been 55 percent better than average, according to FanGraphs’ wRC+ metric. It has also been markedly superior to the numbers Green put up in 2018, his first year at the minors’ top level, as he hit .248/.312/.412 (108 wRC+) with three HRs in 138 PA to conclude his Phillies tenure.
The promotion of Green will give a suddenly contending Giants team more corner depth in the wake of starting third baseman Evan Longoria’s placement on the injured list this week. Although Pablo Sandoval has taken the reins at the hot corner in Longoria’s absence, it’s up in the air how much longer the Kung Fu Panda will remain with the organization. After all, Sandoval’s an impending free agent on a team that might sell by the July 31 trade deadline, despite its recent success.

Finally!!!! Took you guys long enough!
22jclark
They’ve called up plenty of outfielders over the years who were supposed to be the next big thing. Let’s see what happens. Hopefully, he does well
ghostrobot
Nobody slept on Connor joe
Nevrfolow
Everyone but Gary Brown has been given a chance
Buzz Saw
But he can’t field.
Black&Orange&Silver
Let’s see if his bat will play at the ML Level first. He can pinch hit, play 1B, and play a little 3B. The bat will mean a lot more than the glove. We have had plenty of the all glove, no bat guys in this organization. I wouldn’t mind trying out the other way.
Pickle_Britches
I know been wondering when he was gonna get the call. Now they need to part ways with Austin asap
Balk
Austin is a rule 5 guy and would be great for our farm, if we can keep him for the year, not sure if I’m correct, but I believe next year he can get some aaa time instead of sending him back. May be good for the farm
rkumar
hes not a rule 5 guy but hes out of options. id imagine hed be claimed off waivers if optioned
Black&Orange&Silver
Could be a trade chip for a team looking for RH Power off the bench.
22jclark
Austin hasn’t gotten much of a chance yet, partly his fault because he’s limited on defense and struggles against righties. That being said, his power is ridiculous and I think it would be prudent to keep working with him defensively and work on his approach against RHP.
antibelt
Have been talking about this guy for a while. Under the radar pick up that has done well. Before today, Pablo had been in a 3-31 slump. He just can’t play everyday.
Pickle_Britches
I agree. Pablo is best fit for a bench gig, or a fill in once in awhile. I’m impressed how good the back-ups have been doing so far. Donovan and Voht. The way panik has been hitting I’d rather have Donovan start.
Matt Galvin
Panik or Sandoval or Crawford or Belt on the move.
antibelt
I think they’re going to demote Blach since he threw 3 innings today, and maybe release Poms. They still have Holland, Watson, and Smith as lefties in the bullpen. Doesn’t make sense to keep Poms at this point.
Gobbysteiner
They need to start either Slater or Solano everyday at second. Panik is just trash at this point.
antibelt
Slater might be the guy to go down too. Him and Yas still have options left. Really hope all the guys can stay. But don’t see them releasing Panik, with his playoff/World Series heroics. Just not the Giants way.
Gobbysteiner
Not released but maybe phantom ILed. And honestly I think they’re either gonna make some trades or cut Austin, he’s expendable at this point. Doubt they send slater down with how good he’s been.
snotrocket
Sending Slater down when Panik sucks, Pablo is back to trash Pablo, and Tyler Austin is a walking strike out might be the most incompetent decision of all time.
Gobbysteiner
Pablo had 4 hits today but ur point is valid
22jclark
Not releasing Panik. He has struggled but he’s a integral part of the team. He’s not making too much and they can part ways with him after the year. Very unGiants to release someone like that.
BasesLoaded
Have you seen Slater over his last 20 AB? He can’t hit inside pitching. His Strikeout ratio is 33%. His defense is 10x worse than Panik. Slater is basically the same guy from last year. His new swing helps him fight away pitching, but it makes him super vulnerable getting busted inside.
22jclark
Panik is a gold glove winner and Slater was battling the flu this week. That being said, you’re right, his defense is bad but he’s better than their other options. Give him 45-60 days of semi regular play and let’s see. Give him a real chance. I realize he had quite a bit of at bats last year but he has a revamped swing now. I think it’s smart to give him a little more leash
Pickle_Britches
You have to give him sometime, he’s a pure hitter, he can adjust. He’s hit over . 300 wherever he is. He needs consistent at bats and he is better suited for OF. I can guarantee if he played a full season 500+ abs, his slash line would look like 280/365/460 18-22hr
BasesLoaded
I don’t have an issue with him getting more leash. I know he hasn’t had enough AB’s, but I kinda look at it like Mac. He only got 51 AB’s till the Giants took action. My problem with Slater’s new swing is the hop, jump he gets. Yes, that will give him a boost to punish pitches where he could extent himself. That swing caters to middle of the plate, away, outside pitching.
The problem with that is that swing makes it hard for him to react with inside pitching. His new swing delays the reaction time when he gets pitched inside. When I heard about the swing, I knew they were just going to bust him inside eventually. It’s not so much Slater that I don’t like. The swing is just dumb.
antibelt
His numbers compared to Mac at this point are way better. I don’t think that is a fair comparison. Plus, he showed in Milwaukee he has a cannon of an arm.
BasesLoaded
He has always had a good arm. That’s nothing new. Mac Williamson had a great arm as well. Reed has a cannon. Parra had a cannon.
22jclark
Valid points and some adjustments will have to be made to the swing if he’s unable to handle the inside pitch. It’s a game of adjustments.
Black&Orange&Silver
100% agree with your take here. Green has been a stud all year at AAA. Farhan is showing he knows a little bit about what he is doing. I’m excited to see what he can do. I see Green and Pablo platooning at 3B until the Longoria picture gets a little clearer. That frees Solano to play nearly everyday and giving Crawford and/or Panik consistent time off
doubleringer
“Farhan is showing he knows a little bit about what he is going.” But what has this guy really accomplished? He couldn’t get the BHarper deal done. We are still a .250 hitting outfield. He has yet to make any meaningful moves to improve this ballclub. Farhan wasn’t even into baseball before college; now he’s running one of the most storied franchises ever. Why did LBaer even higher this guy?
gmenfan
The Harper deal, really ? At some point, fans will wise up and realize that no position offense-first player in their prime wants to play here until the fences are brought in. Especially a player like Harper that is so completely wrapped up in their own legacy. Year after year, the Giants are the big money team used by free agents to leverage a deal elsewhere. Hardly Farhan’s fault.
Hire = to give someone a job.
Higher = to be above something else.
ABStract
For real, what do you think the Giants record would be right now if Evans was still at the helm?
I can’t believe people are still baggin on Zaidi, look what he’s done with nothing over only a few months?
Did anyone really see them cracking .500, or even coming close this year?
Given more time and some financial flexibility, I’m convinced Zaidi’s gonna make this team a perennial WS contender
Oh and no true Giants fan wanted Harper.
We’ve already had a player that took up too much payroll and had a huge ego that ruined team chemistry, but he was WAYYY better than pathetic little Harper. It was only after Bonds left that they started winning WS, why would we go back to that again with a mediocre player like Harper?
Not with that contact!
doubleringer
**hire – sorry for the typo
doubleringer
It was a typo mr. G. But it made yourself feel better by pointing it out, now didn’t it? thank you for correcting my post. Now , just imagine where this club might be if Harper was playing? Most definitely in a playoff spot. Kind of hard to win without the big bat. If they have to overpay for slugger, so be it. The fences will be moved in; it is happening.
JayRyder
Good Move. Pablo was getting worn down. Right handed third baseman. Better than getting Nunez. I was thinking they might. Needing someone to take for Longo. For awhile. They can see what they have. And still look for trades. . . Everybody lost except Brews and Nats. Not much change. Win tomorrow and keep on riding… Then we’ll see in a week n a half… Hopefully the offense wakes back up mañana…

You gotta watch a YouTube video about how to use punctuation.

No, for real. Reading. Your posts. Is torturous.
There’s. No reason. To use so. Many periods.
See?

I actually feel honored. That you would write me. Your thoughts on this matter… I took some time. To write back. And say thanks… Keep up the good work. . .

Giants should sell Will Smith for a young, ML ready player but keep Bumgarner and either resign him or get the draft pick. Dyson has been nearly as good as Will Smith has been and it wouldn’t be a large downgrade making him the closer. This way, if the breakout performances by Mini-Yaz, Dickerson, Solano, Vogt, Beede are legit, their chance at a Wild Card isn’t completely over and in turn they slightly bolster their farm from the Smith trade.
ABStract
I said the same thing a couple days ago, seems like Bum wants to stay
giants number 1 fan
Blach is definitely going back down, and unless someone is IL’d, I’d guess either Holland or Austin gets DFA’d.
gmenfan
Holland is becoming as big of a wasted roster spot as they come. He can’t be DFAd fast enough.
giants number 1 fan
Pomeranz as a lefty long man makes Holland redundant. The more I think about it, the more likely it seems like it’ll be him.
22jclark
Pomeranz and Blach should be out. Pomeranz is just too inconsistent and can’t find that curveball. Blach was just there to give the bullpen a rest
22jclark
Zaidi giving Menez and Green a mini look before the deadline to see if they can potentially help them if he pulls the trigger on any trades. Don’t see much happening until the deadline based on how they’ve been playing. Zaidi just trying to see what he’s got
JayRyder
True.
azcrook
Blach and Austin are the obvious drops….but, you never know what The Giants braintrust is thinking….Panik has not hit real well, but his glove is outstanding and he does make good contact most of the time…..his situation can be dealt with after the season. Pomerantz will be gone if not now…by the end of the month. Yaz and Slater need to be kept if you want to see what they can do in the long term. Slater can play many positions and Yaz is stroking the ball well. This will be a very interesting remainder of the season for the Giants.
gmenfan
Panik’s glove has been outstanding in the past. He’s been a bit of a mess defensively this year and his bat us abysmal.
Black&Orange&Silver
With two 40 man spots needed, these guys should be:
Worried about being DFA’d
*Williams Jerez
*Drew Pomeranz
*Derek Holland
*Ryder Jones
*Abaital Avelino
*Ty Blach
Possible trade can go down for these guys:
*Will Smith
*Same Dyson
*Tony Watson
*Joe Panik
*Madison Bumgarner (less likely by the day)
BasesLoaded
The Giants have a big series against the Cubs coming up. If they get swept by the Cubs that will knock them to 5-6 games back and you bet things will change. I think the Cubs series will decide how the season is played out.
aussiegiants53
I guess it would come down to who they think would pass waivers if they DFA them, I think Blach would pass, as would Jones. I also think this Cubs series will go along way to determining our future this season. Exciting times ahead either way
22jclark
Good call, it was Holland and Jones.
Cam
Despite the strong slash line, he’s still managing to strike out in over 32% of AAA at bats. He is going to get eaten alive by MLB pitching, but at the very least, Giants fans will be able to see him hit a few out.
cpdpoet
Funny how the Phillies let this guy go, BUT kept Mitch Walding…? Just curious
DarkSide830
tomato, tomato. I agree that having Walding would be better, but i wouldnt have kept either on the 40 man anyway.
