The Cardinals announced Tuesday that they’ve designated lefty Chasen Shreve for assignment in order to clear a spot on the 25- and 40-man rosters for righty Mike Mayers, who has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list.
Shreve, 29, allowed a pair of runs in two innings of work during his second go-around with the Cardinals. St. Louis acquired him from the Yankees in the trade that sent Luke Voit to New York last summer. Shreve has given them 16 2/3 innings of work out of the ’pen but has now also been twice jettisoned from the 40-man roster. This season in Triple-A, Shreve pitched to a 3.80 ERA with 10.6 K/9, 4.0 BB/9, 1.05 HR/9 and a 36.3 percent ground-ball rate.
Of course, Shreve didn’t go to the Cardinals alone, and the breakout being enjoyed by 27-year-old righty Giovanny Gallegos lessens the sting of what once looked to be a decidedly lopsided swap. Gallegos also went to the Cards in that deal, and he’s been brilliant in his first full MLB season. Through 46 2/3 frames out of the bullpen, he’s pitched to an excellent 2.31 ERA with 67 punchouts against six unintentional walks. Metrics like FIP (2.39), xFIP (2.85) and SIERA (2.25) all generally agree that Gallegos has been nothing short of outstanding.
The same doesn’t hold true for Shreve, unfortunately. The Cardinals now have a week to trade him, pass him through outright waivers or release him. Shreve has enough service time to elect free agency if he does clear waivers, but doing so would mean forfeiting the remainder of this season’s $900K salary. As such, he’s likely to stick with the organization if he is not traded and goes unclaimed by another team.

Thank you Shreve for sacrificing yourself to give us voit. Before acquiring him first base was a black hole on the team for a few years. We will forever love you
stan lee the manly
Gallegos was well worth the cost of Voit for the Cardinals. His bat doesn’t play at Busch like it does in New York, so they wouldn’t be getting anywhere near out of him what the Yankees are. Gallegos has been lights out
Yankeepatriot
I am happy for him. He’s always had a very good arm
Steve Adams
Voit has hit considerably better away from Yankee Stadium (.294/.409/.594, 12 home runs) than he has at home (.254/.365/.416, seven home runs).
I wouldn’t attribute his success to Yankee Stadium.
KnicksFanCavsFan
@steveadams you beat me to the punch. well said.
spudchukar
It isn’t just Yankee stadium. Camden? Fenway? Rogers? And for the last time, it isn’t that the Cards didn’t appreciate his talents. But he fits much better where he can DH, since his defense is suspect. Glad he is successful, he is a terrific guy, but he wasn’t a good fit in St. Louis, and the Red Birds got an awesome reliever in return.
its_happening
Steve, compare those numbers to his career at Busch Stadium..
Voit has good career numbers at Fenway, Camden and the Trop, albeit small samples.
spudchukar
Yeah well if one is facing the likes of anyone not named, Snell, Morton, Sales, Price and Stroman 50% of the time ones production tends to rise.
jbigz12
That’s not even remotely true. Steve was 100% correct. Take a look at where his Hrs have come from on the road. They’ve literally been all over the map. He plays at Boston or OPACY more frequently and that’s about it. He’s hit bombs all over the place.

Voit has been a very nice addition to the Yankees. He has come through big time for them. Definitely worth Shreve and Gallegos.

Plus 500k international $$$
thecoffinnail
Yeah but you could be gettin very nice production out of 1st base for the league minimum. Instead the Cards sent decent prospects and are paying Goldy a fortune. You can’t say they wouldn’t be better off with Voit at 1st and all that Goldy money going to 2 or 3 decent relievers.
acarneglia
Thanks for Voit Cards!
spudchukar
You are welcome, he was blocked anyway, and he cannot DH in the NL. But let me be the first to thank you guys for jettisoning Gallegos. He hasn’t just been a pleasant return he is a frickin’ star. Currently one of the best 5 relieves in the NL.
brandone
Blocked by who?
spudchukar
Last year Carpenter. Plus I contend that if you would put Ravelo in the Yankee lineup, with the protection Voit garners, in that park, you would see similar numbers. Plus he is faster and a better defender. It isn’t that the Cards didn’t like Voit’s bat but he is a gap hitter, perfect for NY and it’s so-called stadium but track power in most NL parks. He was expendable.
KnicksFanCavsFan
Let’s officially stop saying Voit is a product of yankee stadium. he’s hit mor hrs away from the stadium than he has at the stadium. his overall numbers day the same and he’s got an impressive walk rate too.
this was one of those win win trades. Gallegos is having a great year but obviously he wasn’t going to break thru with the yanks considering the depth they had.
dmarcus15
It wasn’t just that he was blocked he didn’t have the protection of the lineup in STL Ryan Ludwich and Chris Duncan wouldn’t have been half the hitters they were if it wasn’t for hitting in front or behind Albert. Voit isn’t the hitter pitchers fear that goes to Judge and Stanton hence why he gets more fastballs.
Cam
Voit had actually seen more fastballs in STL (53.2%) than he does in NY (46.1%). But don’t let facts get in the way of a good argument, right?
KnicksFanCavsFan
Short sample size but he excelled WITH Judge, Stanton, Hicks, Didi and Andujar NOT in the lineup..
Give Voit and Gallegos their credit. They both showed their potential once given consistent playing time. I for one was on the Voit bandwagon early when people were screaming how the Yanks needed to find a better 1b. His defense is poor but his bat is legit, he seems like a good clubhouse guy and he’s dirt cheap and comes with another 4-5 years of control.
Ketch
Goldschmidt and Carpenter
mrnatewalter
You can calm down about Gallegos.
thebighurt619
Stalwart relievers are harder to find than 1st base production.
spudchukar
Between watching him pitch in high leverage situations, and eye-popping stats he deserves the star moniker. Can he keep it up? Who knows? But currently he has been nothing short of terrific.
thecoffinnail
He wasn’t blocked. The Cards has no faith in him. If the position was blocked Goldschmidt wouldn’t be parked there now.

Thanks for Willie McGee for Bob Sykes or do you kids remember that deal?

I think ET was one of Whitey Herzog’s favorites,Won the 1985 batting championship I believe.

Wow they need Mayers back bad, the bullpen is pretty heavily-used right now. Hopefully he’s actually healthy and isn’t being rushed back to give guys some rest.
spudchukar
He hasn’t exactly overwhelmed in Memphis. I know Fernandez isn’t on the 40-man roster, but he is tearing it up. The Red Bird relievers are gassed. They could use some time off if St. Louis is going to make a run for it.
teufelshunde4
STL isnt gonna make a run unless SP starts eating some IP, & offense gets it together.
fannclub6
Maybe we should have just kept Lance Lynn? He always ate innings
spudchukar
They have already made a run. The division is brutal. And they have done it without Ozuna, Molina, Carpenter and Hicks. Do they need their starters to go deeper? Of course, but my guess an awful lot of teams think similarly. Do they need for the offense to improve. Decidedly. Do they need help with a left-handed corner outfielder with thump, another quality lefty out of the pen, and perhaps another starter? For sure. But lots of contending teams need help too.
stan lee the manly
Ya I agree with that assessment. I’ll rephrase: they need an effective reliever back bad. Hopefully that’s what Mayers is this time around. The starters won’t keep getting pulled after three like they have been lately, but they need a new arm to eat up some of those innings.
wkkortas
Shreve has been rendered null and Voit by the Cards.
I’ll see myself out.
Monkey’s Uncle
I would try to a-Voit using that pun again if you can help it.
I’ll also see myself out.

Voiturism!

Wow im not sure I have ever seen a trade where fans of both sides were this happy
Yankeepatriot
Same here lol
dray16
When the Brewers traded Will Smith to the Giants for 2 nobodies it also worked out for both teams.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
The Chris Archer trade.
The Rays seem pretty happy with their return and Pirates “fans” and media got exactly what they wanted out of the deal.
For years they demanded this trade (in theory, and for weeks prior, by name) always talking about how Huntingdon was “too in love with his prospects”. They were prepared to slam the Pirates for not making the deal and “not wanting to win” only to have their bluff called. Luckily for them, Archer was bad early and for most of his tenure here. So they got to slam the Pirates for making the very trade they called for…they’ve been so happy.
spudchukar
I never thought I would comment this, but Tyler Webb has been decent. Shreve just doesn’t throw enough strikes. His splitter is a good pitch, but he isn’t ahead enough for it to be effective. His fastball command just isn’t good enough for the MLB. Please make room for Fernandez on the 40-man soon.
Payne Train
Just my opinion – but I would be in favor of stretching him out in the offseason and trying him as a starter in spring training next year …. sign him to a 1 year league minimum …. what’s there to lose
Dankgesang
Dude I can’t believe they dfa’d Chasen Shreve. This is their worst move since trading Mike Truk to the Phillies for Dwigt Rortugal.
pgriffin88
Voit trade looking better and better
king beas
Shreve hasn’t been great but only giving the guy 3 appearances this year after a 3era last year isn’t fair
moe 3
Unfortunately the cardinals never gave Voit much of a chance
spudchukar
It isn’t that they didn’t give him a chance, and didn’t like him, it was that he was expendable. He fits much better in the AL, where he can DH sometimes, since his defense is barely average, and he has track power in many NL parks. Were they supposed to sit Carpenter in 2018?
dmarcus15
Why would they Carp was hitting lights out and his fielding matrix was better than Voit. If Voit could have played a decent outfield he might have been like JMart.
lowtalker1
Looks like he was chasen off the team
Lumps of Cole
Shreve got severance pay for being cut from his arbitration contract before opening day. Those contracts are not guaranteed. He then resigned a minor league contract with St. Louis. So he wouldn’t be forfeiting the remainder of 900k if he refused. He’d be forfeiting whatever his minors deal is worth.
dmarcus15
Cards have 8 days to find suites for players and to find their own players they want. By Friday they will decide if they are buyer or sellers with the new trade deadline.
n13gmlb
Well Yanks put in that claim or wait and sign him back. He was pretty good as a Yankee so seems ok to take a chance!
