The Brewers have designated pitching prospect Marcos Diplan for assignment, MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy tweets. His 40-man spot goes to righty Jordan Lyles, whose acquisition was just announced.
It’s a bit of a surprise to see the Milwaukee org giving up on a player who was once considered a potential mid-rotation starter. Diplan has never been an elite prospect, but has certainly been on the prospect map for quite some time.
Unfortunately, despite holding a 40-man spot since the fall of 2017, Diplan has yet to earn his way past the Double-A level. He returned there to begin the present season, but continued to struggle. In 114 2/3 total frames at the penultimate level of the minors, Diplan carries a 4.79 ERA with 9.4 K/9 and 5.7 BB/9.
It bears noting that the Brewers could still utilize Diplan in a trade. He can be shipped out to another organization before the trade deadline. Otherwise, he could be a possible waiver claim target for a team that likes his long-term outlook.

He should definitely be claimed by someone, you’d have to think. How much could his salary possibly be? I’d love to see him get a shot on the South Side.

Pittsburgh will probably grab him

Get him, Indians!

Get ‘em back in the fold Rangers!

#21-ranked prospect should garner some sort of interest I’d think, just needs to go to a team who can coach this kid up and teach him some control! Teams like Pitt and Seattle, just to name a few, should take a flier on this guy!

Yeah I’m sure the only thing standing in his way from AA to being a star in the majors is just someone to “coach him up” lol… I do agree someone should take a flier on him (if he’s not traded – which more likely given the situation) but I also don’t really think he just needs someone to “coach him up” lol

You killed a fine, albeit obvious point with the lol(s multiple).

He’ll be claimed by Mr. Roarke, for his Fantasy Island Firebirds…..”Whose pitching tonight?”….”Diplan, Diplan”!!”
Now that that’s over with, I remember when he was “can’t miss” coming out of the International market….but he’s only 22, has decent K-rate numbers, and has 2 options….I can see somebody taking a shot…..

Lemme get this straight, Stearns and his team thought Freddy and burnes were ready for rotation spots. They were glaringly wrong about that.
Now they deem diplan and ponce not even worthy of a chance? To clear room for a guy you let walk just last year?
Anybody know what Sal Bando is up to?
brewpackbuckbadg
Lyles not being signed last year (with hindsight), his trade now, and the Diplan DFA are all disappointing but asking for Sal Bando? Might as well ask for Ted Stepien to be GM of the Brewers! Wade Miley is a bigger complaint in my book.

He’s not going to make it to waivers. They’ll make a deal long before then.

Look, boss! Diplan! Diplan!
