12:36pm: The Tigers are still insisting the Nats part with top prospect Carter Kieboom to move Greene, according to Morosi (Twitter link). It’s frankly difficult to imagine that asking price being met with the highly regarded Kieboom dominating Triple-A pitching at 21 years of age. That’s all the more true given that Kieboom could fit on the Nats’ 2020 roster (if not the late-2019 roster) in a variety of ways.
12:07pm: The Braves and Nationals are not just engaged in a key series at the moment. It seems they’re also each pushing for the same relief arms — in particular, Tigers righty Shane Greene.
The Atlanta and Washington organizations are “leaders in the clubhouse” to secure the services of Greene, according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News (Twitter link). Talks between the Braves and Tigers have “intensified” recently, with Greene “the focus,” per MLB.com’s Jon Morosi (via Twitter).
Greene, 30, is earning a reasonable $4MM this year for the Tigers. That’s nothing for his 38 innings of 1.18 ERA ball and 22 saves, though rival organizations still need to assess whether that’s what they can expect moving forward from Greene, who’ll be eligible for arbitration a final time next year.
Clearly, nobody thinks he’ll be able to sustain that sort of pitching output. But there’s good reason to think that Greene is and will remain a quality late-inning piece. He’s carrying 10.2 K/9 against 2.8 BB/9 with a 53.8% groundball rate, with an 11.1% swinging-strike rate that’s substantially better than his prior two seasons.
Was hoping the A’s would get this guy
Loser of today’s game wins the bid to land him
Braves better throw this game then haha
There’s something that seems pretty logical about your post krillin89
I just feel like whoever wins this game will have momentum going into the rest of the season, and the loser may feel a little defeated that they dropped 2 of 3, pushing them over the edge to outbid the other. Sorta a “last laugh” type of scenario
Braves got the division wrapped up.
Lol they want kieboom?? The market has officially been set HIGH.. Wow
Well…..it’s just posturing. Of course I think the braves have better talent to offer.
Bidding war!
Probably neither team will get him
AA is now pursuing backup options
ohhh man come on this would be great!…although just heard on radio he’s blown last 2 saves opportunities and hasn’t had a save since June 28th…still don’t care, let’s get him!
Detroit is just awful
Easy man, we’ve only got 4 wins since then! Also, it’s kinda crazy that all 5 of his ER came on solo shots. What are the odds???
2 of his 3 blown saves came when our crappy defense blew easy ground balls that would of ended the game
gotcha, he won’t have that problem as much with the Braves
Considering he has only allowed 2 runs over his last 10 innings, I’m going to say you got some bad info
who had bad info? what do you mean?
He’s saved 22 of their 31 wins lol
Great pickup for either team, I think WSH needs more than one arm though, so losing him to the Braves hurts them double.
Hopefully they stick with pitchers with 2 arms, but WSH is desperate.
Jim Abbott would like a word.
Applause
More than one pitcher,* but I appreciate it 😉
Should package Boyd, Greene and Castellanos up for Drew Waters +
good luck with the upcoming comments coming your way lol
Why do people think Castellanos is good?
Because he’s pretty good.
Braves are legitimate WS contenders so they should def consider it. Wright + Waters could be centerpiece of deal with a couple lower level prospects.
Boyd would thrive in ATL.
They keep Riley + Pache.
I would be fine with that package, even if nick wasn’t included
Castellanos …Markakis …two sides of same coin?
nope, you get more power, but a greatly reduced defense with Castellanos.
Nationals for Luis Garcia + a throw in
That one makes sense for both.
Allard would have made more sense to trade for this guy. Trading allard for Martin set the bar far too high in this market. Not sure Allard alone would get the deal done for SG, but without a better benchmark, it would have been pretty darn close. Now it’s gonna take a lot for Greene who honestly hasn’t been that good during his career
Allard’s Star had fallen off quite a bit. I think teams around the league did not value him as much as us Braves fans
I agree with Bravesandnolesfan. I think AA is at the backup options at this point. I can’t conceivably see how Green leads the pen to the World Series. However, Green and Martin would be upgrades to our 8th and 9th inning options right now…….
He fits what AA seems to like cheaper price than tier 1 guys like Vasquez or Giles but comes with another year of control.
I like the sound of Swarzak, Newcomb, Tomlin, Blevins, Martin, and Greene in our bullpen. Mostly strike throwing vets who can provide wisdom to anybody we shuttle back and forth to AAA
So i can guarantee he will not be a Brave.
I don’t see any scenario where the Nats give up Carter Kieboom.
…unless Avila includes Boyd, which would make sense if Folty and a #10-20 prospect were included.
Nats should go for Felipe if their giving up their star short stop.
Oof. I hope the nationals give up Kieboom lol. That would be nice for the Braves for next year lol.
He’s having a good season this year, but based on his track record, should teams really give up high ranking prospects for a guy who’s career ERA is 4.53? Yeah, he’s having a great season, but he’s 30. I don’t think most pitchers have a career year at 30 and stay as good or better after that. Now if the guy was 25, maybe, but he’s 30. If I was a team who wanted him, I definitely wouldn’t send a top prospect for him.
But that’s just me. That’s why I’m not a GM or a scout.
If the price for Washington is Kieboom (who is a top 25 prospect) then what are the Braves having to giving up? The Braves won’t move a top 4 prospect. I also wonder if any teams are interested in acquiring Folty.
If I were the Braves, I keep Folty. They would be selling way too low on him
If the price is Kieboom for the Nats then wouldn’t they be asking for Pache or Waters? In other words Rizzo and AA are wasting their time talking to Avila.
yes and yes.
Kieboom huh, that’s why the Tiger’s don’t make many deals. Avila is mental.
Shewmake and Gohra from Braves or Mendoza, Antuna, and Crowe from Nats.
I think Waters and Kieboom are off table and even Garcia may be a stretch.
All for Al reaching but I will settle for win win trade.
Shewmake or Mendoza would be a good pickup for the Tigers, but I believe as 2019 draftees they’d have to be a PTBNL and named after the season. Antuna’s hurt and I don’t know much about his season. Crowe reminds me too much of a Beau Burrows or Kyle Funkhouser back of the rotation possibility. Not really what the Tigers need, but you can’t have too much pitching and I’d say OK to him as well. Not that I have any influence over anyone’s FO!
I am not impressed with Nats prospects at all. I think that is why they are said to be Kieboom or bust with Garcia fall back. Dont know if they are desperate enough for Garcia to be dealt.
If big Al really is asking for Kieboom then he’s even more clueless than I thought.
No, probably just a clueless as you previously thought… no need to exaggerate.
Bah. Forget this nonsense. Just bring back Bruce Sutter. We are still paying him so we might as well see what he’s got left in the tank.
We might not be paying Hrabosky any more, but he might be worth a tryout as well.
Demanding Keiboom May blow up in their faces.
Maybe we’ll see another 3 team deal, Id love to see the tigers get keiboom and like Brennan Davis from the cubs. Tigers send Greene to the nats and castellanos to the cubs and then maybe the nats get someone else from the cubs, maybe like schwarber or happ. Not sure on the logistics of the trade but it seems plausible
Not even if the Nat’s gm gets blackout drunk in the next hour and change…
Nats aren’t giving up Kieboom for Greene.
But what if they get someone in return from the cubs too. Not sure who they necessarily would want but I’m sure there could be some negotiating involved with those two teams too
The Tigers only have 1 tradeable asset that could fetch a prospect like Carter Kieboom and that’s Matt Boyd. And even that isn’t a guarantee. There’s no chance on planet earth Shane Greene brings back Kieboom. Avila is trying to make up for prior poor decisions w that kind of ask. It’s ridiculous and won’t be Met.
Avila didn’t lose the 2011 and 2012 1st round draft picks for Detroit.
He has drafted 4 first round picks that have been good.
An earlier article says that the Tigers were making “reasonable” requests for Greene. I suppose it depends on who’s doing the reasoning.
So they don’t actually have interest in trading Greene basically, got it.
Totally not worth it.
I’d imagine the Kieboom ask is pretty simple. The Tigers are looking for young hitters with upside and Kieboom is the only bat in the Nationals system that they feel fits that profile. Asking doesn’t hurt. The Nationals declining that offer doesn’t hurt either because the Tigers aren’t losing any sleep over missing out on any other Nats position player prospects.
Nats just got Daniel Hudson so now Braves have the edge
i thought it was odd that the article said he wouldn’t be able to keep up this performance. Maybe not long term but I don’t see how any 1 inning pitcher cannot keep up their numbers (most relievers are just not that great of pitchers otherwise they would be starters). He has an .868 WHIP so he is limiting baserunners at a great pace. That should be the ultimate goal of any pitcher. With few runners, then there are few runs.
With Washington picking up Hudson from the Jays, that leaves Atlanta as the last team standing. So Greene’s price just went down.
There’s been plenty of speculation that the Dodgers have been interested. The Astros bullpen needs just grew when they had to Pressly on the injured list. I doubt the Braves are the only team left with interest.
All Hudson is for then Nats is a bandaid. Still need a 7th and 8th inning capable guy.
What about the Blackmon deal? AA who needs mediocre pitching when you can add a bat?
Nats just picked up 3 relievers in the last hour. I would think that they are out on Greene especially with the stupid ask that the Tigers wanted for him
atlanta just had to pull their closer in the 9th today
The brain trust of the Tigers has done it again. The trades with the Cubs and Braves are the best in the clubs history. They made these teams look bad on the big return they received of high quality players with guaranteed victories just around the corner. We are so lucky in Motown to have management that knows a deal when it sees it. Where is Colton Welker?
