The Braves announced Wednesday that they’ve designated right-hander Shane Carle for assignment in order to open a 40-man roster spot for righty Jeremy Walker, whose contract has been selected from Triple-A Gwinnett. Right-hander Wes Parsons was optioned to Gwinnett to clear a spot on the 25-man roster.
Carle, 28 next month, is only months season removed from a 2018 season that saw him finish the year with a 2.86 ERA in 63 innings of work, although he looked quite unlikely to repeat that production moving forward. Carle averaged just 6.1 K/9 against 3.9 BB/9 last season, surviving in large part due to a deflated .258 average on balls in play and excellent fortune in terms of home runs allowed (0.29 HR/9, 4.2% HR/FB).
Carle’s end-of-season numbers were buoyed by a particularly hot start to the season; however, after posting a 0.69 ERA in his first 26 innings, the righty came down to Earth with a 4.38 ERA and an unpalatable 24-to-21 K/BB ratio in his final 37 innings of work.
This season has been a particularly ugly one for Carle. In 9 1/3 big league innings he’s allowed 10 runs, walked nine batters and hit three more while striking out just six. His Triple-A results haven’t been much more encouraging, as he’s limped to a 5.13 ERA with 8.4 K/9, 3.8 BB/9 and a 46 percent ground-ball rate. To Carle’s credit, he’s had the BABIP pendulum swing the other direction against him with Gwinnett, as he’s seen hitters bat .356 on balls put into play against him. He’s still limiting homers (0.54 HR/9) in amid talk of juiced balls in one of the most hitter-friendly seasons the International League has ever seen.
Carle has an option remaining beyond the 2019 season, so a club in need of some bullpen help could certainly take a look at him as middle relief depth. The Braves will spend the next week trying to trade him but could also try to pass him throughout outright waivers (although last season’s success and the remaining option make him a decent bet to be claimed).
As for Walker, 24, he carved up Double-A opponents this season before a brief 11-inning stopover in Gwinnett. The 2016 fifth-round pick is now slated to make his MLB debut on the heels of 69 2/3 innings of 2.84 ERA ball and a 71-to-8 K/BB ratio between Double-A and Triple-A.

Pretty easy to see this coming. Wish we could flip him for cash or project rookie ball guy or bag of balls. He looked to good last year for him to go down like this.
nmendoza7
“project rookie ball guy or bag of balls”, it appears neither of those ares valid trade assets.
bravesfan
Maybe not a bag of balls, but a project rookie ball guy is more valuable than nothing at all by DFA SC
skidie
What is wrong with newcomb. He has been best out of pen last month but without enough innings. just spot insertings except maybe 2 innings sunday. Why will they use him????
Dan Rogers
Huh?
chippahawk
Lol I had that same exact response written earlier but figured skidies just high, hammered, or 10 yo.

hey @DanRogers try calling him a “dummy”, see if you get a better response that way….bwahaha

RIP in peace, Shane. One year wonder.

In truth it was only real a half season wonder. But it was a good half season

Who else can’t wait to see what AA pulls in right before the deadline? Luis Castillo is my pick. Or deGrom. I think there is enough problems going on in the clubhouse for the Mets that he could actually pull off a trade for deGrom. Wishful thinking but if its gonna happen then it will be this weekend for either player.
petfoodfella
The haul NY would require for deGrom to Atlanta would be high. NY is stupid, but they’re not that stupid. I think.
Drew Waters Bat
Of course it would take an overpay but it’s one that is tolerable and should at least be explored. It’s time to contend and wins in this game cost you.

Plus I’m sure BVW is itching to deal. He hasn’t really made a move in awhile. Maybe he is like Dipoto and has a need to trade often. I think he just likes doing paperwork.
steelerbravenation
Saw a report connecting Atlanta to Minor I really hope that is not the case
I eould much rather have Stroman or just go with a 6 man rotation and make a couple deals to strengthen The bullpen
steelerbravenation
Greinke
MadBum
Stroman
Are the only SP options I am interested in seeing be acquired
braveshomer
Greinke seems like the most natural fit….high-end controllable pitcher, we take on his large contract with our ‘financial flexibility’ rather than giving back high-end prospects and only give back a few 2nd tier prospects.

Hopefully the Braves rebuild and continue to be farm system champs. Seems like that is all they care about anyway.
braveshomer
lol….winning championships in AAA is important to those guys too!
TradeAcuna
The reason is it makes casuals think championships are guaranteed if you have prospects. Casuals make up bulk of their revenue. You brainwash them and then they end up on MLBTRADEUMORS thinking they know baseball
braveshomer
yes ‘Casuals’ unfortunately pay the bills and are often front office apologists while not too quick to complain….sound business plan when you think about it lol
UGA_Steve
Sorry, but I disagree. You are giving casuals too much credit.
Casuals are the ‘here and now’ people. They are the ones wanting you to go after EVERY free agent as they typically know zilch about building teams. Most casuals can’t even name more than a single AAA player. I cannot tell you how many people I talk to that still don’t understand the reason for trading Kimbrel or Simmons. The same ones that thought in the reverse think the Tigers were idiots to trade for an old pitcher at the deadline in 1987, giving us Smoltz, yet they are asking the Braves to potentially do that themselves to get them to the playoffs.. The same ones that keep droning on and on about the Braves not signing Harper, Machado, Martinez, Corbin, AND Kimbrel, Those are the casuals. The ones who know nothing about finances and long-term commitment. They are the same ones who probably don’t even learn to apply those traits to their every day lives until their 40’s or later and claim ‘victim’ mentality when the world craps on them after a single successful year in which they blow all their money thinking they are guaranteed to keep making the same amount every year.
Then you have the whiners that are never happy.
The semi-intelligent folks are the ones that want to build and conserve prospects. They somewhat understand finances, but rarely long term financial commitments and how to leverage financing against other teams (they would completely disintegrate like Marvin the Martian shot them if they tried to follow the NBA trade nonsense)..
The truly intelligent fans are the ones that just plain understand that you have to do both. Start with a build, then fill in gaps with needed pieces in such a way as to not significantly weaken the long term plan while taking the one of two few shots you can get.
The latter is where the Braves are now, whether or not the whiners want to admit it. The problem is, with the one true trade deadline and ridiculous parity, this is shaping up to be a bad time to be in that market. There are so many teams that still have a shot at the playoffs (where anything can happen) that there are more buyers than sellers. This is causing supply to be low and demand high, making the prices ridiculous.
I think AA will make some moves, but I also believe he will have to wait for prices to come down. I think this team is more than a piece away from beating the Dodgers or Astros. They might be able to topple the Yanks if they can get that matchup, and possibly the rest of the teams. I think AA knows he doesn’t have the front line pitching ready yet. If he wants to win this year he will make a move. He is just waiting for that Supply/Demand curve to shift a little more to his liking. The problem is, if some other borderline teams pay the high price early and decide to go all in, the supply will shrink and the demand won’t change. So waiting is a dangerous game this year without that second trade deadline.
As a refresher, here are some of the things people overlook that have already been done this year.
– signed Joyce to fill a lefty hitting bench role, to which almost everyone on this board WHINED INCESSANTLY about
– signed Ozzie Albies to a long term deal that stands a good chance of working out in the Braves favor
– signed Ronald Acuna to a long term deal that stands an even better chance of working out in the Braves favor
– signed Brian McCann to a team friendly contract
– signed Nick Markakis to a team friendly contract
– signed Josh Donaldson to an ok contract. Pricey, but only one year. Basically if the Braves took off and he was playing well then bonus, and if the Braves floundered they could possibly get a piece for him, or compensation for QO)
– signed Josh Tomlin to an ok contract that has turned out well
– purchased Jerry Blevins which has turned out very well
– traded AV who was not likely to pitch for them again for Swarzak .. has worked out well but really was a plus no matter what since AV wasn’t coming back
– signed Keuchel to an ok contract, but fit a need well
You guys can complain all you want, but his moves this year have been rock solid. No Uggla or Upton type signings that will hurt us for half a decade. One could probably state that he has won every single trade this season. Yes, we may want him to do a bit more, but he could have done so much worse.
Liberty is somewhat of a problem, but they do have a huge debt to pay off with the new stadium, so I get it. The problem is that even if the Braves win the World Series, they just won’t up their revenue that much due to …. the the horrible TV contract.
AA is doing alright. I certainly don’t want him to overpay for junk rentals. That being said, I would love to send Day and a prospect or two to the DBacks for Greinke and some cash.. Wouldn’t mind Stroman or Ray. That being said, I don’t trust Minor and MadBum just isn’t the same pitcher of old. Vazquez is a dream candidate, but Giles or Greene are far more probable.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the deadline will blow up starting Saturday. Let’s just hope AA is ready to pounce.
braveshomer
well said…just a tsd long winded lol but well put nonetheless
