Daniel Hudson’s strong season is drawing trade attention from the Red Sox and multiple other teams, MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi reports (Twitter link). The Blue Jays signed Hudson to a one-year, $1.5MM contract over the offseason, and the 32-year-old is on pace to deliver his best season as a relief pitcher, with a 2.72 ERA, 8.8 K/9, and 2.00 K/BB rate over 43 innings. The Red Sox are known to be looking at the high end of the bullpen market, though it isn’t surprising that they would also be seeking out pitchers like Hudson, who wouldn’t cost nearly as much in the way of prospects.
Hudson’s performance comes with some red flags, however, as ERA predictors (4.46 FIP, 5.51 xFIP, 4.67 SIERA) hint that Hudson is due for some major regression, and he is allowing a lot of hard contact — 40% of Hudson’s balls in play are hard-hit. On the plus side, Hudson’s fastball velocity and spin rate both rank in the 89th percentile or better of all qualified pitchers, so a lot of that hard contact is going for naught (or is being converted into relatively harmless fly balls, as his 47.5% fly ball rate is well above his 39.2% career average).
Here’s more out of Toronto….
- In another tweet from Morosi, Eric Sogard is getting some looks from teams in search of a utilityman, especially clubs turned off by the Royals’ “crazy” asking price on Whit Merrifield. Sogard is another unheralded offseason signing who has become a big contributor for the Jays, with a .305/.369/.491 slash line (128 wRC+) and 10 homers over 304 plate appearances. MLBTR’s Jeff Todd recently explored how Sogard’s unexpected power surge has been something of a mirage, though Sogard’s solid contact skills and defensive versatility make him an asset even if his bat cools off. He has worked mostly as a second baseman this year, though also with time at third base, shortstop, and both corner outfield positions.
- The Blue Jays are facing a decision about Dalton Pompey, Sportsnet.ca’s Arden Zwelling writes, as Pompey’s 20-day injury rehab assignment is up on Monday. Since Pompey is out of options, the Jays have to either call the outfielder up to the majors, or designate him for assignment. It isn’t out of the question that Pompey could come through DFA limbo without being claimed, Zwelling notes, as other teams might also not want to spend a 25-man roster spot on his services. Once a consensus top-50 prospect prior to the 2015 season, Pompey has fallen off the radar after several injury-plagued years, including multiple concussions. He only returned to action in early July after suffering another concussion during Spring Training.
Down with OBP
Maybe the Red Sox fans would want the Jays to trade Hudson for that perfume swatch they kept from two years ago? I mean. Because Boston fans thinks they actually think they have assets.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Hudson and what else for that perfume swatch?

In all fairness the Sox do have prospects but may not have the comparable high end, or soon to be MLB ready obvious prospects other teams looking to acquire might have, which definitely puts them at a disadvantage in discussions.
It also depends on which positions the Jays or any team “selling” needs or wants as far as a return so the obvious match based on minor league talent may not be so obvious.

The Sox do have assets, but I do agree with you RSN does overplay their value, just like the Yankees fans who want Trevor Bauer in exchange for returning Clint Frazier to Cleveland.
However, one look at SoxProspects.com shows quite a few players with significant upside. They are just also risks, so it would take more of them to get anything of value.
Tristan Casas is a big boom or bust candidate. Great hit tools, but if they don’t fully develop he’s near useless. Dalbec has had a down year in terms of average but still hit 19 homers in 300 ABs. His OPS is still .830. His tools developed slowly as he was also tested as a pitcher. Another high-risk, high-reward type. Mata isn’t ready to help anyone yet, but his stuff projects as a dominant reliever to back end starter. I personally think his future is in the bullpen in a setup/closer role. 2 potential plus offerings and a 4 pitch repertoire don’t seem to be working for him just yet. Cutting that down to a 3 pitch mix is the way it seems they are going with him. Jay Groome just had TJ, but also has high upside potential. Just hasn’t pitched in a year. I could go on to Houck and Flores, but I think my point is made.
There’s a lot of talent there, just undeveloped. There’s no sure things, which is why their prospect status is low. I think the Jays would jump at the opportunity to add 3 of them for a guy like Giles. The thought that its a barren wasteland is as false as the Red Sox fans overvaluing their talent.
JaysForDays
The jays are going to land a high end prospect for each of stro and Giles… the red sox don’t have the quality. Look at Braves …and twins to each get one.
thefenwayfaithful 2
This is assuming that someone bends their current offers. Stroman should for sure net 1 really high-end prospect with a couple high ceiling guys. Sox can’t get in on that. Totally agree
Giles is likely to either be a mostly 1 for 1 deal for a high end prospect or as suggested 3 or so high ceiling guys with some risk. I’d argue that for the Jays window, the 3 high-ceiling guys with some risk offer a higher reward. Its not like they have 1 position they need filled. Teams smartened up after the Chapman / Miller trades and seem to be more cautious.
Also note: Right now it doesn’t look like the Braves are that involved on Stroman / Giles. They have repeatedly said they don’t intend to give up much to solve their rotation issues. It sounds like they are aiming more at a Mike Minor-type. t.co/vhQScjLlUt

Yes. Anthopoulos is allergic to rings.

The problem is that most of the experts don’t see much in the way of future impact players in the Sox system. Despite what a hometown blog with a hometown bias says, the players aren’t there.
The Sox have no top 100 prospects and only one guy who is even a 50 FV prospect. After that they have 3 45 FV guys, and it bottoms out. On top of that one of those guys is Darwinzon Hernandez and all three are listed as high risk.

FrostyPucker
Yeah. And Bluejays fans actually think their organization is competitive.

Daniel Hudson is fully deserving of everything he has ever earned by committing his life to throwing a baseball. But Daniel Hudson isn’t a bullpen arm that helps a team win a title.
jimmertee
Dalton Pompey needs to be released. He has been kept at the expense of letting other players go which is a mistake. Time for the Jays to cut bait.
terrymesmer
Pompey has been on the 60-man IL since April 2. That means he was NOT taking up a 40-man roster spot. Who do you imagine the Jays lost so they could keep Pompey?
its_happening
Blue Jays were set to keep him on the 40 AND the 25 had he not been hurt back in the offseason because he had no options left. They did not predict another injury in Spring Training. So in-order to facilitate that they’d cut someone else (naturally). Pick a player….Smith Jr, Travis Bergen.
Nobody cares about April 2. Decisions are made long before Opening Day with regards to the 40-man.
Dexxter
Smith Jr, Bergen and almost Jordan Romano… but so far they haven’t amounted to much with their other orgs.
Can’t imagine the Jays release Pompey after keeping him so long and with so many other optionable players. Does it really hurt to send McKinney back down for example and give Pompey a shot?
If he’s great… then great! And if he sucks it probably helps you sneak him through waivers later. Win win.
its_happening
Since they didn’t cut Pompey before spring they may as well let him play. McKinney has had plenty of time to prove he belongs. My point was they didn’t need to hold him just because he ran out of options.
I do know the organization has put in a lot of time into Pompey’s development both personally and professionally. It does makes sense that they want to get something out of it. However, I would have cut my losses last offseason.
Dexxter
Yeah. I probably would have kept Smith Jr. over Pompey at the time…. but I can see the value of hanging onto the highest upside player with that 25th roster spot.
jimmertee
I think you’ll find that when Pompey finally gets another shot in the big leagues he’ll amount to a 4A player. And yes over the years the Jays have carried Pompey on the roster, others have been lost or almost lost to other clubs.
Pompey is a base stealer and won’t even be a good 4th outfielder in the big leagues.
Cut him and let him go.
GareBear
Sounds like a Royals signing if I ever heard one
jdgoat
They did pick between Smith Jr and Pompey. It worked out that Pompey got injured a few days after Smith was DFA’d. Luckily, Smith jr has proven that it didn’t really matter. He’s been very bad this year.
jimmertee
I hope the Jays can get a top 200 prospect for Hudson. I would’t Give up to much to trade for him.
Dexxter
Agreed. If they get a prospect that drops in the middle of their top 30 plus a lotto ticket… I’d be pretty happy.
Oriolespaat
On the good side of huddy he leads mlb in stranding runners and in the day when batboys can hit 15 homers he hasn’t given one up since May
aussiegiants53
Guessing the Sox will take a flyer on Derek Holland, probably make more sense then Dan Hudson at the moment
Acuña Matata
At this stage in his career, Holland should stay out of the AL East
George
I looked for comparables in the relief trades they made last year. Seunghwan Oh’s stats are very comparable to Hudson’s, and they got Forest Wall, a very good outfield prospect, and Bryan Baker, a 6′ 6″ RHP who is pitching to a 2.72 ERA between AA/AAA.
its_happening
A friend of mine was down in New Hampshire watching both guys. Said Forrest Wall should be in AAA and got to see Baker too. Said Baker looked good.
mueller.ryan11
Chad spanberger was also part of that deal
jimmertee
That was a good trade at the time. Spanberger is going nowhere near the big leagues though. Maybe the Jays can bundle him for a pitcher.
steelerbravenation
3 way trade Wil Smith to the Braves
Bryce Wilson to the Blue Jays
Eric Sogard to the Giants
??????????????????
Matt Galvin
Better 3 Way Trade but really 4 way Braves get Sanchez,Dyson,Watson. Giants/Blue Jays get Prospects. Cardinals get Madbrum or Stroman,Giles or Smith and Belt to play LF.
Dexxter
Jays say yes.
Can’t see why the Giants would though.
steelerbravenation
Giants are going to look to retool
Take from the bullpen to strengthen 2B or OF and gain a prospect while still competing for a WC
I can’t see that big of a deal happening
I really don’t see MadBum getting moved at the deadline
Dexxter
I mean… I guess. But if the Giants only got Sogard for Will Smith? Zaidi is smarter than that.
I’m all for the Jays trading Sogard for a top 100 prospect though….
steelerbravenation
Also NOBODY is taking Belt’s contract.
Any Giant moves will not be done until July 31st to make sure this little ride they are on will sustain
I bet of all the teams they are the most hurt by the single trade deadline
Matt Galvin
Cardinals don’t need Smoak because only plays 1B and no DH in NL. Can move Ozuna to RF and Belt then in LF. Sandoval to fill in at 3B.
Also lots of Teams haven’t decided if their Sellers or Buyers yet. Waiting intill last minute even if Deadline was at midnight when you have lots of moving piece doesn’t help.
luckyh
Just idiocy to do anything except drive up the prices for other teams. This team can’t beat the Orioles. Why mortgage the future for these fat and happy players who can’t seem to get it together for any stretches of time? Too many players with too many issues.
