The Blue Jays announced on Thursday that they’ve designated right-hander Nick Kingham for assignment. His spot on the active roster will go to lefty Thomas Pannone, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo and will start today’s game. The move leaves Toronto with an open spot on the 40-man roster.
Kingham, 27, was once a well-regarded prospect with the Pirates but made his way to Toronto via trade earlier this year after Pittsburgh designated him for assignment. The out-of-options righty struggled tremendously with the Bucs, leaving the organization with little choice but to make a move. Kingham fared considerably better in 18 innings with the Jays, pitching to a 3.50 ERA with 12 strikeouts against seven walks (one intentional. However, the alarming home run issues that plagued Kingham in his final season with the Pirates carried over in Toronto. He served up four homers as a Blue Jay.
Toronto will now have a week to trade Kingham, release him or pass him through outright waivers. He’s never cleared waivers in the past, nor does he have three years of MLB service time, so if Kingham does clear, he can be outrighted to Triple-A and remain with the club without occupying a spot on the 40-man roster. It’s not out of the question that another organization will want to try its hand at straightening out the long-promising right-hander, though. If he does land with another club, he’ll need to stick on the big league roster due to the aforementioned lack of minor league options.
jbigz12
I would be surprised if the Orioles don’t give him a shot.
isaiahproctor
I was thinking the same, but High home run rate won’t play well in OPACY
jbigz12
Oh, I agree about the HRS. For a no cost waiver claim it’s worth a look. If the Jays want to recoup some kind of small prospect I’d pass. But if he hits waivers then I obviously would roll the dice.
jdgoat
For sure. He’s the exact type of arm a rebuilding team should be taking a chance on.
jdgoat
This definitely should be a Derek Law article. At least Kinghams been successful since coming over.
its_happening
Success? Wow….
Taejonguy
well… in comparison.
No Soup For Yu!
A 3.50 ERA is by most metrics “success”, even if it’s not sustainable in the long run.
its_happening
Over 18 innings. Is that not a small sample size or am I out of line even suggesting it?
Otherwise Justin Shafer may as well go directly to Cooperstown with his 2.09 ERA and his great success according to JDGout.
jdgoat
It’s still amazing how you try and start arguments with others using things in your own head. One pitcher has been passable in a limited amount of time. One has been borderline unusable. Like what could possibly be your problem that you have to come after me? I try to ignore your comments and I’d appreciate if you’d do the same. You never have been able to have a civil back and forth, yet somehow everybody else on here is the problem? You’re the biggest hypocrite on here. Don’t ever try and take a moral high road with your anti-bullying rants when you’re literally the only one who calls people names and acts condescending. JFC man have some awareness.
its_happening
First off, I’m not going to argue over Derek Law because I agree wholeheartedly he shouldn’t be on the team.
Second, Nick Kingham should have never been obtained in the first place. Then the Jays drop him, which further proves the point he shouldn’t have been obtained in the first place.
Third, coming after you? Are you the only person allowed to reply to comments and I’m not? What special rules do you have that others don’t? What social justice rule am I breaking in your self-imposed “code”?
Forth, you’ve flagged my comments which I’ve never done to you. Plus the way you’ve gone after others certainly doesn’t make you an authoritarian either. Especially how cruel you’ve been to Jimmer – the person you claim is my burner account. If that lie isn’t bullying on your part then I don’t know what is.
Put it together and you have a guy with no awareness – you.
Franx
Actually trim, you are a pretty big bully on here brother. No doubt JDgoat goes after Jimmer, but in honesty the guy deserves it. He literally just keeps saying I know someone in head office so I know more then you in like half his posts. He doesn’t say it directly, but he does imply it with every post. So it’s hard to have a debate about it.
As for you man, every time I see you post it’s negative, never once have I seen you post something positive when it comes to people on this website or the Jays in general.
Are you even a Jays fan? It doesn’t seem like it. Should really think about what you post, cause as I said, negative attitudes like yours, are the reason why no one likes Toronto teams. Fans are just downers… Much like yourself
its_happening
Let’s get this straight; I go after someone I am a bully. Someone goes after Jimmer and me, we deserve it?
Ok, glad that’s sorted out.
Never seen you on here, don’t know who you are and because you’ve never seen me write positively I’d say you didn’t do your homework. Would you like me to be sunshine and rainbows for a team acquiring pitchers with a 9-ERA? Should I be happy with a team sabotaging a chance at a World Series with a self-imposed salary cap?
You’re probably right. The Blue Jays deserve only positive reinforcement. They should never be held accountable. Then again you tried to hold me accountable. I’d say you’re being negative franx.
ronnsnow
Pirates should bring Kingham back with the current state of the pitching staff. I’d rather see him get a chance than see Jordan Lyles continue to get lit up.
bragnar
Open roster spot go to Font? or is he headed to Buffalo
DarkSide830
font is out of options
TheMichigan
Pretty sure Font cleared waivers since he was traded for cash.
I think they may be clearing 40 man spots for July trades and waiver claims.
JaysForDays
40 man spot is for Borucki or however you spell that
its_happening
Who’d you rather, Blue Jays “fans”, Font or Kingham.
I wonder how long Pannone had to travel by car to reach Boston sometime after 10am this morning. Eastern Time.
clrrogers 2
A 6 hour drive for Pannone is what I read.
its_happening
So he was on the road by 4am minimum, probably closer to 3:30. Pitched well the first few innings today.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
The Pirates pitching was actually pretty solid when they got rid of Kingham. Now…
They might as well put in a claim on him. Holmes or Hartlieb have options.
Mendoza Line 215
I agree with Josh and Ronn. The key to Kingham is to get him to AAA and let him pitch there, even for a year, until he gets things sorted out.
I realize that they would have to keep him on the ML roster for awhile, but maybe after a month they could slip him down.
He does have some upside but I think that he needs more time in the minor leagues.
Hartlieb is already down.I would send Crick and his 7+ walks per 9 innings down until he improves. The demotion saved Rodriguez’ season.
Brad Vanderberg
Why DFA him over Edwin Jackson and Derek Law??? More reasons to add to the list of how stupid and clueless Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro are!
Also getting more and more dissatisfied with first year manager Charlie montoyo. He too seems clueless and unable to do the job. Keeping Aaron Sanchez in the rotation must be a collective decision involving all these morons.
This club will never improve with these fools making all the decisions.
jdgoat
I don’t think you can call other people stupid and clueless when you’re the one complaining about a guy not getting dfa’d when he already has…
its_happening
Brad you didn’t see? We are not allowed to question the Jays front office. With all the championships they’ve won and all the World Series appearances we have to bow down and take what they give.
We can’t question the moves made by guys with no plan. And we can’t question why performing arms aren’t promoted, whether it’s to Toronto or a level up in the minors. We aren’t allowed to question failures of pitchers like Kingham, Font and Law with other teams because the pitchers in AAA, performing or not, are worthless and insignificant. That’s the message this front office is sending to us.
As for Montoya, the pass stops now. The basic fundamentals and mental mistakes have been glaring and embarrassing. One of the blunders sent Matt Shoemaker to a season-ending injury. Now the coaching staff will have to wear it.
Please excuse JD. He calls people names once in a while. He knows it.
jbs32
Seriously what’s your problem man? JD says Law should have gone instead and you go after him for saying someone with a 3.5 era in 18 innings has to this point be a success. And now you go after him for commenting about someone complaining they should have DFA Edwin Jackson instead, when they already have. All while still complaining about not DFA Law, which was JDs point to begin with. How many rookies do you want on the team btw? How many guys need to be promoted annually to give the rest motivation, as you say? We’ve seen Pannone, Gurriel, Guerrero, Biggio, Jansen, Schaefer etc all promoted this year, sometimes you need to bring in depth from other organizations. Minor moves are just that, minor moves you don’t have to complain about every single one like it’s the end of the world and trading cash for Font is not keeping the Jays from a World Series.
its_happening
I don’t know if you proofread but if you do you might want to work on it.
Here’s the deal; Law and Kingham have no place on the rebuilding Blue Jays. You make minor moves if your intention is the win and contend. For the Blue Jays they’ve been stacked with mid-20 year old arms waiting for an opportunity at the major league level. They have earned the shot because of past performance. Not the Kingham’s who’s 18 innings of 3.50 ERA was after a 9+ ERA from Pittsburgh. I have a problem with that, yes.
I do not understand why you’d disagree with me; I’m the ONLY Blue Jays fan supporting the underpaid little guys in the minors to get a real shot. The rest of you want retreads who can’t hack it. Considering how you, JD and others want to see the “little guys” get their due you aren’t the ones fighting for them. Yet I am. Interesting….
Anyway if it’s too much to ask for a culture change with the team I have supported all my life, the same team that saw a 22-year playoff drought with the richest owners in baseball then call me negative. I don’t think I’m being unfair here.
TJECK109
I can’t remember how many arm chair GMs were putting in waiver claims for this guy
jbigz12
No major league GM got the chance because he was traded before he went on waivers. I bet he doesn’t clear waivers again. That’s just a dumb comment anyhow. 99% of waiver claims don’t pan out. That’s the nature of the claim. It’s a gamble on a guy who has been playing bad. They don’t put high level performers on waivers very often.
joew
send him to the stros they give him pine tar and he will win the cy young next year lol…. /s
but really nick has an arm on him just needs some one to bring it out and the stros seem to have great pitching coaches
Mendoza Line 215
How about his head and heart?
His last game as a Pirate when the Cubs bombed him he was saying how great the Cubs hitters were.
He also needs better control.
He needs another year in AAA and he may become a good pitcher.
Gwynning's Anal Lover
The Astros should pick him up to get the next Pirates ace.
K parque
Everyone can say what they want to talk about with Nick Kingham! I’ve known him since he was a child and he has the heart and soul of any baseball player that I know. Nick will come back and surprise all of you. Some of you probably have never played the game, and make your comments which you have no clue as if you all remember my cousin Jim Parque who pitched for the White Sox. I don’t like to be negative but some of you with the things you say can be really rude and I like to see you go out and play the game.
