The Astros have activated righty Joe Smith for the first time this season, per a club announcement. He’ll take the spot of Cy Sneed, who was optioned down.
To create 40-man space, shortstop Carlos Correa was bumped to the 60-day IL. Correa will not be eligible to return before the end of the month, though he was not expected to be ready by that point anyway. He’s said to be nearing a rehab assignment as his fractured rib recovers.
Smith has been sidelined all year after suffering an Achilles tear over the offseason. It’s anyone’s guess what he’ll be able to contribute, but the ’Stros have good cause to find out. The 35-year-old sidearmer is due $8MM this season. He was a solid contributor in 2018, when he turned in 45 2/3 innings of 3.74 ERA ball with 9.1 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9.

i wonder if whoever gives Correa his massages works as a trainer for the Mets or the Yankees.

Is it not common knowledge that this was not a massage injury, but one incurred during… adult relations? Thought that was obvious.

Masseuse walking on his back. pretty simple conclusion. How the hell do you fracture a rib during sex

There are many ways my friend. Many ways. The first interview he gave seemed to give it away. Can’t remember now when it was exactly

Depends on what time her husband came home…..

I don’t think the human arm was designed to bend that way. Maybe the bend, but not the torque…
gmenfan
Explains how he ended up on the IL.

This is puzzling. I swore on espn they were expecting CC to start rehab this week and be back in the lineup for this series if not next week. I don’t follow him closely so who knows

It doesn’t mean Correa won’t. He just can’t join the Astros 25 man roster 60 days from May 27th. It has already been 47 days. Correa probably wouldn’t be back to the bigs before July 26th. At that point he can be reactivated.

Gotcha.

So let me understand this correctly, Sneed pitched excellent last night in mop up duty for Valdez who lasted 2/3 of an inning…and he gets sent down for his work?? Valdez and Urquidy are both pitching like garbage and have no business starting a game, yet Sneed seemed like he was able to produce outs and gets shafted.
Luhnow/Hinch are both good at their jobs for the most part but they also appear clueless at other times (White, Valdez, Urquidy immediately come to mind).
Astros2333
They just wanted a fresh arm there. Sneed did great but he threw a lot of pitches. My guess is he’ll be back in 10 days. Framber and Jose are still young and their early outings make them available.
astrosfan4life
Sneed could’ve pitched in 5 days instead of Valdez or Urquidy just the same. Of the three, only Sneed has looked good. Urquidy has been terrible and Valdez has shown flashes, but not lately.
The fresh arm is Smith for the bullpen, but they still have to have someone in the rotation who isn’t making every start a bullpen game (Valdez and Urquidy). The move makes zero sense on the Astros part.

Great to see Joe back to full health. I’ve been a big fan of the side-armers going back to Garber, Tekulve and Quiz when I was a kid. Joe has been the torchbearer of late.
