The Yankees have announced the signing of first-round draft pick Anthony Volpe was signing on the dotted line. He’ll receive $2,740,300, per MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo (via Twitter).
Volpe, a high-school shortstop from New Jersey, was taken with the 30th overall selection. That choice comes with a $2.37MM pool allocation, so the Yanks will have to find some savings from other signings.
Most pundits didn’t have Volpe rated quite this high. But the Fangraphs duo of Eric Longenhagen and Kiley McDaniel graded him the 38th-best prospect available.
Volpe is known most for his glovework, as he’s considered a polished and talented shortstop. Questions remain about his bat. Entering the draft, many wondered whether Volpe would end up at Vanderbilt, but he chose instead to launch a career with his hometown team.
Wonder if they will get Lieter’s kid to sign now.
Have heard that he’s not signing.
No chance he signs
Leiter isn’t signing, specially since they went over slot for Volpe
I think this will go down as one of the weakest drafts in memory. So many players have weaknesses.
At the time of the draft, yes. But long term I t’s better to look at the draft 10 years later to see what actually came out of it
Is this Cito Culver 2.0?
Not even close. I read comps with Bregman and Trevor Story. He’s very young. High end IQ. High end glove. Great contact to all fields. Great base running smarts. Only knock is power but he has shown he can take it deep especially in big spots. This kid could be one of the most exciting picks in draft. Seattle was gonna take him 20th overall but he wasn’t willing to waive his Vanderbilt commitment to go there if they drafted him. I love the pick. Great great kid.
Bregman and story comps for a guy who wasn’t first round rated. Get out of Yankee world for a bit bud
And power as a weakness? Ya, two of the games premier power infielders are not good comps…
exactly
I read the only knock on him is his glove, other than that he’s basically Ozzie Smith and Omar Vizquel.
Can he pitch? Allow me to clarify- can he start, consistently go 7 innings and have an era of 3.25 or better?
Am glad he signed though
Nobody goes 7 consistently anymore. There were only like 10-12 that made 200 innings last year.
fine how about 6? i think you get my point and name me the last team to win a world series without a solid #1 guy? and don’t tell me the royals. Cueto was a stud that year
Cueto had a 4.76 ERA, 4.06 FIP and a 1.45 WHIP for KC. That ain’t stud numbers. He only had a good WS.
In 32 starts between the Reds and Royals, Cueto went 11-13 with a 3.44 ERA, striking out 176 batters across 212 innings, allowing just 194 hits and 46 walks, while pitching 2 complete game shutouts. He set career highs in BB/9 (1.95) and K/BB (3.83) ratios alongside a K/9 ratio of 7.47, despite failing to post a sub-3.00 ERA for the first time since 2010.
Ok he wasn’t great post trade but otherwise a stud that year and in the series.
Besides it proves my point that you need an ace to win a world Series that only the royals are the weak link of championship teams
How does his numbers in Cincy have the slightest thing to do with KC?
Paxton has a 3.11, ERA, Tanaka has a 3.42 ERA. Sp they’re both pretty close to the random meaningless number you just came up with.
look dimwits- my point is that cueto was the weakest ace on a world series winner in recent history and that the Yankees need an ace to win it all this year.
Those are facts. I am not defending cueto. only showing that as a weak ace he had 5 straight sub 3 eras and then was that same ace in the world series. Plus he threw 200 innings.
the yankees needs an ace. that is fact
Pax has an era now over 4 and Tanaka 3.6. They are still good pitchers but not aces…
Hypothetical: Your high school kid is drafted in the second round (or later) and obviously recruited to go to great colleges to play. Slot value is about $1.7M max. You advise him to go pro or play in college? I’ve heard of parents suggesting to their HS kids that if they don’t land in the first round they don’t sign (Mike Trout is an example).
What would be the lowest amount you’d let your HS kid sign for? For me, I think that first round or college advise is sound.
Most parents aren’t realistic enough to look at their children like a scout could. Most scouts don’t bs and will tell you what they would do. Is the kid mature for his age? Athletic enough to actually make it in the show long term? Position? Most catchers don’t learn a thing about game calling in college and that stunts development. Pitcher? Take the bonus money and get it in the contract that the team pays for your education after retirement.
Volpe wasn’t first round material but the yankees must have been confident they could sign him if they picked him there. You need the confidence that you will perform well in college and come out higher than you went in at. You also have to want to go to college. It’s an individual choice I think.
I work for a former NHLPA.
What is happening now is if they convince the player to forgo college the down the road caveat is that the club pays for schooling so long as they represent the club in a way determined in the event he is a “flop.” One would be scouting. This happens often and it’s not considered in compensation/money slots.
In hockey they can leave school early. Happens often
Are the Yankees signing Bumgarner?
Wrong post…..
I’ll try an angle here-after a disastrous try at all defense zero (and I mean zero) offense in Holder in a SS pick a few years back they went the other way with Volpe. Yanks have a plethora of MI in the minors too so maybe it’s part of their farm strategy.
I am in the minority here, however I liked the videos and reports I saw on him before the draft. Hopefully his makeup and work ethic is enough to take his game to the next level.
