The Twins have signed right-hander Drew Hutchison to a minor league contract, according to Nate Rowan, director of communications for Triple-A Rochester. Hutchison will start for Rochester on Friday, per Rowan.
Hutchison opened 2019 as a member of the Yankees’ Triple-A club after signing a minors deal in the offseason. He struggled to a 5.14 ERA/4.86 FIP with 8.7 K/9, 4.0 BB/9 and a 42.8 percent groundball rate in that 63-inning span, though. Hutchison was far better as a member of the Dodgers’ top affiliate in 2018, however, and does own a solid 3.81 ERA with 8.2 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 425 1/3 Triple-A frames.
Now 28, Hutchison is still best known for an occasionally effective run with the Blue Jays from 2012-16. Since then, though, the former Tommy John surgery patient hasn’t produced much in the majors with the Pirates, Phillies or Rangers. Despite useful strikeout and walk rates (8.11 K/9, 3.07 BB), Hutchison has managed an unappealing 5.10 ERA/4.45 FIP in 460 1/3 major league innings – mostly as a starter.

Yup. Bandaids ain’t gonna help this problem

Was just thinking the Jays might as well just bring him back if they are going to keep rolling Jackson out there

Agreed. He did have a great run that one year against the American east teams. Always thought he would pan out as a solid 3-4 starter. Guess that’s why I am not a scout.
DoItDoug
I agree too. Give him another shot. Can’t before worse than poor Edwin.

I have to imagine these guys that used to be starters that the twins are bringing in on minor league contracts probably aren’t being looked at as starters. They’re most likely being looked at as serviceable arms to strengthen the bull pen. Usually if you go from a starter to a reliever you get an uptick in speed and velocity on your ball because you’re only pitching 1 or possibly 2 innings. Falvey and Lavine have been very good so let’s give them a chance to showcase what their vision is.

And Mary Tyler Moore’s blue hat will never come back down into her hands.

He was never very good with the Jays. But he went 13-5 in 2015! So what his .ERA was 5.71 …The Jays offence was absolutely deadly in 2015, giving hutch an MLB best 6.71 in average run support. He did his best to lose those 13 games, but the offence bailed him out over and over.

@jwinker
Your claim is absurdly false — which is remarkable, because the information is easy to look up.
> But he went 13-5 in 2015! He did his best to lose those 13 games, but the offence bailed him out over and over.
In 2015, in his 13 wins, Hutchison had a 1.86 ERA, 1.008 WHIP, a 4.35 K/BB ratio, and a slash line against of .217 AVG/.268 OBP/.306 SLG/.574 OPS.
He was horrible in losses and no-decisions. But that is not warrant to make up stuff.
Robertowannabe
Making up stuff to make your point seem more believable is always the choice method on these boards! Those that do that always forget that one can always look things up easily these days.
jwinker
It’s called sarcasm folks. I know it’s tough to read tone on boards. Obviously no one does their best to lose games. It simply means that hutch effing sucks.
jwinker
If I had said that hutch gave up a million runs, would you scoff and scold me over that too? Haha.
terrymesmer
You made a factual claim, not a sarcastic remark. Your attempt to save face is pathetic.

Now has 7 organizations to his professional credit. Only 23 to go!
Rich Hill’s Elbow
The need for a better bullpen has been there since the offseason (with only Parker to show for it), and now that we’re in the drivers seat of the AL Central the FO still won’t make a deal.
At the very least, my expectations were that we would take a flyer on Ryan Madson and or Cody Allen by now, not bring in AAA arms like Hutchison and Krol…
CaptainHooks
You ASKED for Cody Allen. You GOT Cody Allen. Quick response to your request from the Front Office!!!! Perhaps the Front Office will also trade for Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith before the Trade Deadline?
top jimmy
Wasn’t this guy once the opening day starter for Toronto?
jeb39999
I think DeJong inability to pitch even at
AAA prompted this move, I would predict his release after a serviceable showing by Hutchinson
jimmertee
Drw Hutchinson needs another Tommy John.
terrymesmer
Saying that is just wrong.
