TODAY: Torres has officially been added to Detroit’s roster, as per a team announcement. Reininger was optioned to Triple-A, while Josh Harrison was moved to the 60-day IL to create a 40-man roster spot. Harrison hasn’t played since May 27, and is facing a six-to-eight week absence due to hamstring surgery.
SATURDAY: The Tigers are set to select right-hander Carlos Torres’ contract from Triple-A Toledo, Jason Beck of MLB.com tweets. The team will option fellow righty Zac Reininger to create a 25-man spot for Torres, but it’ll also need to make a corresponding 40-man move.
Sunday will mark the two-week anniversary since Torres joined the Tigers on a minor league deal. Since then, the 36-year-old has pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings at the Triple-A level with five hits allowed and three strikeouts against no walks. Torres previously notched respectable numbers as a member of the Padres’ Triple-A club, with which he logged a 2.49 ERA/4.18 FIP with 8.17 K/9, 3.55 BB/9 and a 50.7 percent groundball rate over 25 1/3 frames. Torres exited the organization when he opted out of his minors pact May 15.
A 15th-round pick of the White Sox in 2004, Torres has seen MLB action in every season but 2011 since he debuted in 2009. Torres owns a 4.04 ERA/4.21 FIP with 7.89 K/9, 3.43 BB/9 and a 44.4 percent grounder mark in a combined 500 2/3 innings with the ChiSox, Rockies, Mets, Brewers and Nationals.

I always hope to read the Tigers did something fantastic. Oh, maybe someday but not today.

FIP is worthless. Show me what a pitcher really did…..
Connor Byrne
His ERA’s there. I always list both numbers.
jorge78
Sorry. Temporary insanity.
I have issues!
jdgoat
Definitely not worthless. If you only look at ERA you’re going to end up with a lot of one year wonders or end up giving up a guy who is on the verge of a breakout.
Melchez
I like to add the ERA and FIP together and divide by 2., if it’s under 4, then great. K/9, anything over 8 is great. BB/9 would like under 3 if possible. Grounder rate anything over 40%.
My standards may be lower than most.
RiseAgainst3598
I’m guessing Tyson Ross to the 60 Day IL
stancpa44
Release Josh Harrison, he is on a long term injured list, probably won’t be able to play until mid August., not hitting very well, no need to keep him.
YakAttack
Castellanos, Greene, and Boyd for Trout.

BobSacamano
While we’re at it, throw in Avila for Ohtani.
Dkaner
I always find it funny that anytime Tigers have more than one player available to trade, someone tries to throw them all in one trade. This never happens and will never happen. Greene and Castellanos will get traded but to separate teams for sure. Boyd might not get traded unless someone gives up a high quality prospect. Yankees are still looking for pitchers so I would give Cashman a call. He has more prospects than he knows what to do with.
Melchez
I’m curious what a trade for Trout would even look like. Those 3, throw in Mize and Manning and Stewart and Turnbull…. could that even get the Angels attention? They throw in Pujols for salary relief? I doubt the Angels would even consider it.
Even if the Padres gave them their top 7 prospects… No way.
Toronto starts with Vlad Jr and you might perk their interest, but no, nothing would get them to trade Trout.
Dodgers top 5 prospects, Urias, Bellinger, Verdugo….. now you might have something….
stymeedone
Why are you even considering the Tigers as a match for the Angels just signed star? Ain’t happening.
Melchez
I could see Nick going to the Rays. He hits lefties really well. Yankees have 3 lefty starters and the Red Sox have 3. Those are the biggest competition for them. He wouldn’t cost much in trade, maybe one low prospect in their very deep system. He could offer them outfield depth and maybe an emergency 3B option. Last year of his contract and he walks so no cost next year. Maybe SS Jelfry Marte? A very young international signing at a position of depth for the Rays.
diller1340
Tigers are strictly looking for major league ready prospects in return for Nick because their young pitching prospects are a year or so away and they want prospects on their timeline. Plus the tigers won’t just give away nick because they would offer him a QO after the season and either get the draft pick compensation or get nick for another year cheap and try to trade him all over again.
Melchez
You really think they would offer him a QO? His numbers are bad this year. $18 mil for a .260/313/444 hitter with 6 homers and marginal defense? I think they might let him hit free agency so the QO is lifted and then sign him for much less. But I really think he gets traded for peanuts and signs a 1 year deal to build up his value. Maybe to Baltimore where they have a small stadium and quite a few lefties in that division.
diller1340
Gm Al Avila has said that the tigers would strongly consider a QO if they don’t trade or extend nick. And I highly doubt nick would sign a 1 year deal for cheap anywhere considering he just fired his agent and hired Scott Boras. And I really think the tigers will hold firm on anyone they trade this year to strictly get major league ready talent because they have been rightfully criticized for the returns they got on Verlander and JD
Melchez
The only major league talent they are going to get for Castellanos is a backup catcher.
diller1340
If that’s the case I don’t think they will trade him. They won’t take “peanuts” for him for sure….. they would go the QO route before that
Melchez
I think they’ll take anything right now. They are going no where this year. They are scratching to put a team on the field as it is. They thought Harrison and Mercer would be their anchors in the middle and they have been hurt. They hoped Ross and Moore would be a bridge to the young guys and that bridge broke. They are just trying to get through this year now to regroup for next year. Tigers are sitting at a number 5 pick right now. They may be a 3 pick when it’s all said and done. Baltimore and the Royals are by far the worst two teams and I could see the Royals and Tigers battling for last, so maybe a number 2 pick.
Tigernut2000
Get him cheap? For $18 million? You believe the FO will pay that kind of money? No way. Nick will be trade and the Tigers will get little in return. AA just won’t be able to get much.
stymeedone
@ melchez
Yes, that’s what Boras always recommends for his clients. LOL
Dkaner
This is great addition and helps the Tiger make that run towards the first pick in 2020. Without him, they might have added someone good which would have hurt our chances at the number 1 pick. Tigers can’t afford to win meaningless September games two years in a row.
Melchez
I expect the same next year. They lose Nick, Harrison, Mercer, Ross and Moore plus not having to pay Houston for JV and that saves them over $30 mil. Will thy invest that in a big name… of course not. They might sign a couple $2 mil players like Logan Morrison and Soria… but that’s it. In 2020 they get out from under Zim and the money for Fielder… that’s another 30 mil they save.
stymeedone
As Nick puts butts in the seats, and they have the payroll, and they need offense, I could see Nick getting a QO. I don’t see him going in a trade for less than that draft pick value.
ElMagoN9ne
Is this the catlos Torres that unintentionally hit sammy sosa in the head. And it split the helmet in at least 3 or 4 places? This had to have been 2004 maybe. Which would have made Torres 21 at the time.
