TODAY: Piscotty could be available off the bench today and is tentatively scheduled to be in Monday’s starting lineup, Slusser tweets.
FRIDAY: The Athletics announced startling news Friday on right fielder Stephen Piscotty, who underwent surgery to remove a melanoma from his right ear (full statement via Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle). Fortunately, the surgery was “successful,” according to the Athletics, who expect that Piscotty will be healthy enough to return to the team within a week.
The tumor was spotted during what the A’s called “a routine spot check” on May 28, which led to a biopsy and then the 28-year-old Piscotty’s surgery. Piscotty asked team trainer Nick Paparesta to set up the initial appointment, per general manager David Forst (via Steve Kroner of the Chronicle).
“We believe it was caught early, hopefully as a result of Stephen being vigilant,” Forst said.
While no doubt a frightening experience for Piscotty, it’s a relief that he’ll seemingly recover from it at a quick pace. MLBTR joins those around the game in extending well wishes to Piscotty, whom we hope to see back on the field with the A’s soon.

“I don’t know much about this Cable fella but I guarantee you he hasn’t killed as many people as melanoma has.” In all seriousness, get well soon Stephen! You’re one of my favorite non-yankees to watch.

clever deadpool 2 reference. good luck to this man.

Melanoma is no joke. I see a lot of these cases in Pathology. Hope for a speedy recovery.
dewssox79
thats scary because he has the ability to get checked daily by drs while us citizens cant get that treatment.

Sad but true!
BaseballBrian
Not true. You can go to an urgent care or ER whenever you please.

Another fake news item from the uniformed right.
You might go there, but with no insurance or money a doctor will not operate.
Sad but true!

Be prepared for $5 a gallon gasoline. And a lot of rain.

You know they say. If you think medical insurance is expensive now. Wait till its free.

I’m glad they caught it early and hope he makes a full recovery. I lost a girlfriend to melanoma in 2010 because a dermatologist saw a mole on her back and prescribed antibiotics, then, upon her return, drained it without performing a biopsy or feeling her skin over her entire body as dermatology guidelines indicate. He referred her to a plastic surgeon if she wanted it removed. The plastic surgeon was the one who performed the biopsy and felt along her left arm to discover a sizable tumor there. She had CP and had little to no feeling on her left side. The dermatologist cost her months that may have saved her life. She looked into suing for malpractice while she was alive but her family had no desire to continue trying once she was gone, since amelanotic melanoma is hard to diagnose. Melanoma is no joke.

Wishing Piscotty a speedy recovery.

He’s going to PH today, so you got your wish!
DarkSide830
the poor man’s had a terrible shake of things with his mother’s condition and now this. hope it’s up hill from here.
Strike Four
Wait, the A’s aren’t even putting him on the IL?!?!? No team is more moronic at not putting guys on the IL than the A’s. Just, why? Why play down a man SO often? First Davis now this? Simply disrespectful to the fans. Beane and Forst are total idiots now.
arc89
I agree they are so cheap when it comes to putting players on the IL. I have given up on this season because the team acts like they don’t care about the fans. Let’s just roll out the same minimum pay players and hope we get lucky.
athleticsnchill
This man right here is not a baseball fan. I didn’t realize you could contradict yourself so badly, but you somehow managed it.
Who do you think they would have called up if they had to put Piscotty on the IL? That’s right, one of 3 players getting paid league minimum. And looking at the rest of our players getting paid league minimum? They’re our best players.
athleticsnchill
That’s… not how the IL works. If they feel the need to, they can place him on the IL retroactive to the date they filed the initial injury with Major League Baseball, as a lot of teams do, which means he would be eligible to come of within the week regardless.
zacharydmanprin
The A’s have more important things to worry about than catering to your ego. If you were fans you would probably understand that there are limitations to what they can do. Putting a player needlessly on the 10 day IL when he could have been available on the 4th day in incredibly foolish. Plus, the A’s have Pinder and Canha that can get some regular ABs during this time.
Strike Four
They’ve literally played short in extra innings games, all other 29 teams dont do this, please stop defending it. My ego? LOL WTH literally all A’s fans hate that they do this every single season, multiple times.
However, Piscotty is available today, so it apparently was barely worth covering as an injury-related story to begin with. If he was going to be out up to 7 days though….*waves fist at the sun*
athleticsnchill
Your ego is actually massive. You type so much but say so little, yet feel you’re justified in your usually incorrect opinion.
That the A’s are still within spitting distance of a wild card spot means they feel a lot more comfortable than most teams do playing a man down, especially with Pinder able to cover so many positions. We also have one of the best travel secretaries in the game, who got a catcher to the team within 3 hours of Nick Hundley going on the IL.
CowboysoldierFTW
It’s stupid to argue about the A’s being super handed when a young man’s health was at stake.
Strike Four
Thats the whole point, his health actually wasn’t at stake, he had an extremely minor operation that literally made him miss 1 game, when the original prediction was 7 days, which is a story all A’s fans have had to hear over and over throughout the last decade or so and why we were bringing it up to begin with!
