The latest on a few injured hurlers…
- The Blue Jays placed right-hander Edwin Jackson on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a lower back issue, Scott Mitchell of TSN tweets. Jackson has endured a nightmarish season with Toronto, the record 14th major league team for which he has pitched, having notched a 12.43 ERA/9.65 FIP with 6.04 K/9 and 4.26 BB/9 in 25 1/3 innings. The 35-year-old allowed seven earned runs on six hits (three homers) and two walks during a 2/3-inning shellacking at the hands of the Angels on Monday. For now, Jackson’s IL placement will stave off a potential designation for assignment.
- Mets left-handed reliever Justin Wilson had been nearing activation, but he has suffered a setback in his injured elbow, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. That’s yet another negative development for the woebegone Mets, who also received bad injury news on outfielder Brandon Nimmo and reliever Jeurys Familia on Wednesday. Like Familia, another of the Mets’ big-ticket offseason pickups, Wilson has trudged through a season to forget thus far. The 31-year-old Wilson has been on the IL twice – including since May 11 – with elbow troubles, and he has only logged a 4.82 ERA/5.96 FIP in 9 1/3 innings since the Mets signed him to a two-year, $10MM contract.
- Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez underwent an MRI on his sore lat muscle on Tuesday, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com. Hernandez – who hasn’t pitched in the bigs since May 11 – had been on a rehab assignment, but concern arose when he exited a minor league start last Friday with shoulder fatigue. “Felix had some discomfort in the back of his shoulder,” manager Scott Servais said. “It’s concerning enough to get new images of that. Let’s find out exactly what is going on in there.” Thanks in part to Hernandez’s injuries, it appears the Mariners legend’s tenure in Seattle will go out with a whimper. The impending free agent, 33, has followed up his woeful 2018 production with an even worse 6.52 ERA/5.37 FIP in 38 2/3 innings and eight starts this season.
- Cardinals righty Adam Wainwright will come off the IL to start Thursday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com relays. Wainwright has been on the shelf since he departed a June 9 start with left hamstring tightness. Like most of St. Louis’ other starters, the 37-year-old Cardinals icon has registered unspectacular numbers this season. Wainwright owns a 4.46 ERA/4.59 FIP with 7.77 K/9 and 3.95 BB/9 in 70 2/3 innings.
Felix’s only option here is turning into a reliever, hoping to gain a tick or two on his fastball through shorter outings, and maybe give a few seasons of decent bullpen production.
Hard not to think that the perception of his attitude towards changing – particularly, not wanting to change a thing – has led to such a dramatic fall off. If he were a bit more adaptable, maybe he wouldn’t be an absolutely garbage pitcher now.
Felix has thrown his last pitch as a mariner. He will be on the IL the rest of year.
I tend to agree. M’s are out of it and have the luxury of marking time on his rehab if for no other reason than to keep him off the major league mound and letting that contract expire. Thanks for the memories, but the results aren’t gonna be there until he puts some effort into transitioning into a reliever, but that’s a situation for his next organization.
And aging star bad attitude is not welcome on rebuild team. Losing is hard enough as it is.
Oh look Edwin Jackson has a sore back. Imagine that. Just like Luciano needs 50 days off to rest his arm.
The Blue Jays circus continues.
In the case of Jackson that must be the issue it’s not like they’re saving him for anything.
The issue is he’s garbage.
Well there’s the dfa for that
Can’t dfa if injured
Lol. Edwin might have a start or two left in him if he get 10 days rest. But yah, he needs to retire.
He has been a good warrior over the years. Too bad to see anyone “done”.
Wonder what Atkins was thinking when Jackson was signed: ” Hey Jackson is available, let’s do that and it’ll sort out all our problems”
Felix has a lot of innings on that arm and so far hasn’t adjusted to the loss velocity on his fastball. I’m not sure if it’s because he can’t or he won’t make the changes. He’s a free agent at the end of the season, 33 years old and making 27 M. He should, at least, consider retirement and not even enter the market.
Agreed. Loved King Felix in his prime but if he’s unwilling or unable to make adjustments in order to become a serviceable pitcher (at least) then it’s time to say goodbye to the ballgame.
He’s made a truckload of money in his career. It’s not only the adjustments he obviously needs to make to continue. It’s just that even if he does he’ll have to settle for a minimal salary. Given his attitude towards making adjustments I think he’ll have just as much of an attitude toward the extremely low offers he receives. My bet is that he hangs it up at seasons end.
Very best he can expect this winter is to receive an offer as a non-roster invitee. Produce results or go home.
My wife, the Mets fan (nobody’s perfect…), has always referred to Citi Field as “being on the shores of Lake Wobegon” and the Mets as “the little team that time forgot, and the decades cannot improve.” This year’s team is woebegone indeed. Wilson and Familia has red flags all over the place but I don’t think anyone could’ve envisioned getting the house of horrors they’ve gotten from those investments.
Wilson was always a bit overrated in my mind. i dont know why people obsess over mediocre relievers like him and Warren.
Couldn’t agree more. Wilson has always been a fastball-first guy with really questionable command, and always seemed to get even more erratic in higher leverage situations. If he wasn’t left handed he probably would be an up and down guy at best. Just didn’t think it would be this bad of a combo of injury and ineffectiveness. Warren is even more of a head scratcher as a righty. The Yankees always tried to sell him as a swingman, but he never showed me much as a starter. Even when he produced decent results out of the bullpen 1 or 2 years there was always a smoke and mirrors feel to it.
Wainwright “unspectacular numbers?” Wait a minute. I’ve read on here from commenters that he has been “fabulous” and “better than expected”.
Edwin Jackson’s injury is whiplash.
Release seawald from the system
E.Jackson and Familia are trash. Mets and Blue Jays are better off without them
It’s too bad about King Felix–you hate to see a great fade away, and sometimes that just happens. I’m really dubious that whatever ails him as a pitcher can simply be fixed with a change of attitude. He may just be worn out. In the last four (3+) seasons he’s aggregated .6 WAR. I don’t know how he makes it back. Someone might give him a low-dollar contract next year and maybe there’s something left, but it doesn’t look like it.
Tim Lincecum – “Welcome to my world.”
Much like your denial of DeJong being a yawn, Now you invent your “fabulous” claim. Like Cards81 asserted, Waino has been better than I expected, even very good in a couple of outings. I too figured he would be retiring before the All-Star break, but when he was hitting 92 consistently after 120 pitches against the Cubs I realized he still had productive innings in his arm. Will he falters? Maybe but to date he has been a reliable #5, eating innings and giving the Red Birds a chance to win without hardly putting a dent in their payroll.
Will he falters? I donts know…
Wainwright is doing just what he’s paid to do and what they hoped… produced back end starter results. Their problems to this point have a lot more to do with the guys they count on to still produce at a high level. Guys approaching their prime or in the middle of those years.
That’s like asking CC from the Yanks to be an ace. Hasn’t been for years. Both commanding a fraction of the money on year to year deals.
Well Luciano on the IL for 60 days is a forgot conclusion. He’s 19 and never pitched above rookie ball, however Shapiro and Atkins claimed him in the Rule 5 draft which shocked everyone because it means they had to carry him with the Jays for this season. He’s young and he might eventually be good but he is no where near ready for the majors so they put him on 60 days IL and it makes room on the roster and they don’t have to hand him back. Next year he’ll likely be in A ball or maybe AA but no higher, and if he sticks we won’t see him for 2 to 3 yrs at most.
Edwin Jackson on the IL for a supposed back injury is just a way of getting around giving him another start, and Atkins and Shapiro not having to admit he was another of their hiring gems.
How can you explain your payroll for the players on your 25 man roster is 48 million and your salary for players no longer with the Jays is 50 million. for this season, and your fan attendance is down by over 8000 per game so far this year.
Or does anyone at Roger’s really care.
