The latest on a few injured hurlers…
- The Blue Jays placed right-hander Edwin Jackson on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a lower back issue, Scott Mitchell of TSN tweets. Jackson has endured a nightmarish season with Toronto, the record 14th major league team for which he has pitched, having notched a 12.43 ERA/9.65 FIP with 6.04 K/9 and 4.26 BB/9 in 25 1/3 innings. The 35-year-old allowed seven earned runs on six hits (three homers) and two walks during a 2/3-inning shellacking at the hands of the Angels on Monday. For now, Jackson’s IL placement will stave off a potential designation for assignment.
- Mets left-handed reliever Justin Wilson had been nearing activation, but he has suffered a setback in his injured elbow, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. That’s yet another negative development for the woebegone Mets, who also received bad injury news on outfielder Brandon Nimmo and reliever Jeurys Familia on Wednesday. Like Familia, another of the Mets’ big-ticket offseason pickups, Wilson has trudged through a season to forget thus far. The 31-year-old Wilson has been on the IL twice – including since May 11 – with elbow troubles, and he has only logged a 4.82 ERA/5.96 FIP in 9 1/3 innings since the Mets signed him to a two-year, $10MM contract.
- Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez underwent an MRI on his sore lat muscle on Tuesday, according to Greg Johns of MLB.com. Hernandez – who hasn’t pitched in the bigs since May 11 – had been on a rehab assignment, but concern arose when he exited a minor league start last Friday with shoulder fatigue. “Felix had some discomfort in the back of his shoulder,” manager Scott Servais said. “It’s concerning enough to get new images of that. Let’s find out exactly what is going on in there.” Thanks in part to Hernandez’s injuries, it appears the Mariners legend’s tenure in Seattle will go out with a whimper. The impending free agent, 33, has followed up his woeful 2018 production with an even worse 6.52 ERA/5.37 FIP in 38 2/3 innings and eight starts this season.
- Cardinals righty Adam Wainwright will come off the IL to start Thursday, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com relays. Wainwright has been on the shelf since he departed a June 9 start with left hamstring tightness. Like most of St. Louis’ other starters, the 37-year-old Cardinals icon has registered unspectacular numbers this season. Wainwright owns a 4.46 ERA/4.59 FIP with 7.77 K/9 and 3.95 BB/9 in 70 2/3 innings.

Felix’s only option here is turning into a reliever, hoping to gain a tick or two on his fastball through shorter outings, and maybe give a few seasons of decent bullpen production.
Hard not to think that the perception of his attitude towards changing – particularly, not wanting to change a thing – has led to such a dramatic fall off. If he were a bit more adaptable, maybe he wouldn’t be an absolutely garbage pitcher now.
bigdaddyhacks
Felix has thrown his last pitch as a mariner. He will be on the IL the rest of year.
solaris602
I tend to agree. M’s are out of it and have the luxury of marking time on his rehab if for no other reason than to keep him off the major league mound and letting that contract expire. Thanks for the memories, but the results aren’t gonna be there until he puts some effort into transitioning into a reliever, but that’s a situation for his next organization.
Ejemp2006
And aging star bad attitude is not welcome on rebuild team. Losing is hard enough as it is.
jimmertee
Oh look Edwin Jackson has a sore back. Imagine that. Just like Luciano needs 50 days off to rest his arm.
The Blue Jays circus continues.
Laibax
In the case of Jackson that must be the issue it’s not like they’re saving him for anything.
its_happening
The issue is he’s garbage.
DarkSide830
Well there’s the dfa for that
goalieguy41
Can’t dfa if injured
jimmertee
Lol. Edwin might have a start or two left in him if he get 10 days rest. But yah, he needs to retire.
He has been a good warrior over the years. Too bad to see anyone “done”.
Wonder what Atkins was thinking when Jackson was signed: ” Hey Jackson is available, let’s do that and it’ll sort out all our problems”
terry g
Felix has a lot of innings on that arm and so far hasn’t adjusted to the loss velocity on his fastball. I’m not sure if it’s because he can’t or he won’t make the changes. He’s a free agent at the end of the season, 33 years old and making 27 M. He should, at least, consider retirement and not even enter the market.
bradthebluefish
Agreed. Loved King Felix in his prime but if he’s unwilling or unable to make adjustments in order to become a serviceable pitcher (at least) then it’s time to say goodbye to the ballgame.
jbigz12
He’s made a truckload of money in his career. It’s not only the adjustments he obviously needs to make to continue. It’s just that even if he does he’ll have to settle for a minimal salary. Given his attitude towards making adjustments I think he’ll have just as much of an attitude toward the extremely low offers he receives. My bet is that he hangs it up at seasons end.
solaris602
Very best he can expect this winter is to receive an offer as a non-roster invitee. Produce results or go home.
PepperoniPapi
My wife, the Mets fan (nobody’s perfect…), has always referred to Citi Field as “being on the shores of Lake Wobegon” and the Mets as “the little team that time forgot, and the decades cannot improve.” This year’s team is woebegone indeed. Wilson and Familia has red flags all over the place but I don’t think anyone could’ve envisioned getting the house of horrors they’ve gotten from those investments.
DarkSide830
Wilson was always a bit overrated in my mind. i dont know why people obsess over mediocre relievers like him and Warren.
PepperoniPapi
Couldn’t agree more. Wilson has always been a fastball-first guy with really questionable command, and always seemed to get even more erratic in higher leverage situations. If he wasn’t left handed he probably would be an up and down guy at best. Just didn’t think it would be this bad of a combo of injury and ineffectiveness. Warren is even more of a head scratcher as a righty. The Yankees always tried to sell him as a swingman, but he never showed me much as a starter. Even when he produced decent results out of the bullpen 1 or 2 years there was always a smoke and mirrors feel to it.
Nick Stevens
Wainwright “unspectacular numbers?” Wait a minute. I’ve read on here from commenters that he has been “fabulous” and “better than expected”.
cards81
Lol no one ever expected Wainwright’s numbers to be spectacular…What he has done is keep the cardinals in every game and given them a chance to win…which is all you would expect from a 5th starter lol…only people like you who come on here trying to sound smart would make such a ridiculous comment…he has a positive WAR at this point so all is well…and he definitely has been better than expected considering I thought he would be done by June…but he is still and effective pitcher
Nick Stevens
“Every game?” You are one of these sheep who sucks up everything from the front office. Wainwright has a road ERA north of 6. Don’t sit here and make shiiit up.
spudchukar
Said the “king” of making stuff up.
Nick Stevens
What have I made up? Here’s some real facts not made up. Wainwright FIP 4.58. WHIP 1.401. 4BB/9. K/BB ratio of 1.97. If anyone ever uses superlatives about this guy, they should have their head examined. Good news is, the Cardinals offense is really coming around. NOT!
cards81
Lol what have I made up…you are just coming on here trolling trying to start an argument in which there is none…like I said, no one was saying wainwright was supposed to be spectacular lol only you I guess thought that…everyone else just hoped he would be an effective 5th starter…in which case he has been every bit of that…so you are the only one looking like the fool here
Nick Stevens
Not trolling. Speaking truth. Sergeant Schildt said before the season that ALL 5 OF HIS STARTERS were #1 quality starters. That is a fact. And if all Wainwright was going to be is a 5th starter, as you claim, why waste a spot on him when they have numerous younger guys that could hold that spot? Also, why do they keep giving starts to Wacha when he has been hurt for years, and he clearly is ineffective. Quit mistaking rational comments on my end with trolling.
cards81
Lol you coming on here being an internet tough guy is trolling…listen bud go look in the mirror and argue with that person…wainwright has meant a lot to the cardinals and his leadership value is every bit worth his contract and what he has done so far this year…I don’t know what Shildt said it if he did he clearly was using a positive position at the beginning of the year and obviously being optimistic…go live in your pessimistic world and try not to act so tough while hiding behind a computer
Nick Stevens
You really are an insecure little man. How am I acting like an internet tough guy? Because I don’t agree with your b.s.? Or the Cardinals way of how they built this team the last 5 years? If that’s being an internet tough guy, then so be it. I see your kind every day in the business world. Whine when someone disagrees with you, and whine more when facts are presented to call your b.s. I’ll keep living in REALITY. You keep those rose colored glasses on. I’ve got a pretty good idea you lean with the Liberals too.

Much like your denial of DeJong being a yawn, Now you invent your “fabulous” claim. Like Cards81 asserted, Waino has been better than I expected, even very good in a couple of outings. I too figured he would be retiring before the All-Star break, but when he was hitting 92 consistently after 120 pitches against the Cubs I realized he still had productive innings in his arm. Will he falters? Maybe but to date he has been a reliable #5, eating innings and giving the Red Birds a chance to win without hardly putting a dent in their payroll.
Nick Stevens
You keep living in fantasy land. It’s hilarious. And no, I didn’t invent any such things about what I read on here. Keep trying.
spudchukar
Someone probably said Waino pitched fabulously tonight, like he did recently versus the Cubs. That is completely different from saying Waino has been fabulous. The lack of honesty in your comments are glaring.
Nick Stevens
Good to know 7 walks and 126 pitches in a game is fabulous. I would like to know what 0 walks would be? Super duper fabulous?
Nick Stevens
What planet do you people live on? He’s been “eating innings?” Innings eaters are guys that go 200+ a year. Not 140-150. Wainwright is averaging 5.1 innings per start. The entire staff has been anemic. You folks in STL ever figure out why your team is hovering near .500? Maybe you’ll figure it out by September?
cards81
Lol the cardinals are three games out of the Central and two games out of the wild card…Goldy hasnt started hitting but he is coming around as is carpenter…both those players are known for slow starts…hey bud, there are a lot of games to be played so I wouldn’t count anyone out yet…go ahead and say I’m a sheep lol your go to statement…in which I’m not sure you even understand what it means lol I call it being a fan of my team and believing in them…like the blues…they were in last place mid season and now are Stanley cup champs
Nick Stevens
Slow starts? They are 70 games into the season. The entire Central division is weak. Every single team is flawed beyond belief. What the Blues did was a once in a lifetime experience. Besides, unlike the Cardinals, the Blues started giving younger, more deserving players the bulk of the playing time. Berube wasn’t a puppet like Sergeant Schildt is to Eddie Bauer. Binnington replaced Allen. Bouwmeester and Steen both got cuts in playing time. Leadership actually showed up on the ice with O’Reilly. Who is leading the Cards? The same guys who have failed the now soon to be going on 4 years of missing the playoffs? Good to know the Cardinals mantra is still, “we want to be competitive” instead of, “we want to win the WS.” You are Eddie and Dimwitts poster child of a fan.
cards81
See above statement
spudchukar
Hard to know where to start. First off, have serious doubts anyone said Waino has been fabulous. But his outing against the Cubs shouldn’t be demeaned cause of the walks. I would be the first to admit 7 walks an outing isn’t an approach I would recommend. However, if you watched the game you should have recognized the teasing approach Waino used, and when it mattered he made great pitches. Plus, he finished so strong that the outing moved from terrific to amazing. Yes it was fabulous. As to the flaws all teams have in the Central should breed optimism. The one thing that the Cards have that the others lack is options. It will be interesting to see what moves the contenders make. An addition like Boyd or Smith and maybe even Dickerson would go a long way to filling holes. Unlike other divisions the Central has no weak sisters. The Reds haven’t hit which is unlikely to continue, and soon the Buccos will get pitching back. Shaw and Aguilar have slumped for the Brewers, and will most likely change. Another starter will be acquired. And the Cubs still have plenty of talent. Good chance there is no Wild Card in the Central. Hard to figure out the Red Birds. Pieces just aren’t fitting so far, but to be only a couple of games out is reason for optimism. Your Manachean thought process has no room for the variables necessary for intelligent discourse. You fail to recognize the conplications.
Nick Stevens
Teasing approach by Wainwright? This comment doesn’t warrant me having any discussion with you because it’s too stupid.

Yes, your comments are representative of those of the Trumpian era. You have a wonderful role model. Yes, those are echoes I hear.

I’m right again. This is too easy.

E.Jackson and Familia are trash. Mets and Blue Jays are better off without them
mike156
It’s too bad about King Felix–you hate to see a great fade away, and sometimes that just happens. I’m really dubious that whatever ails him as a pitcher can simply be fixed with a change of attitude. He may just be worn out. In the last four (3+) seasons he’s aggregated .6 WAR. I don’t know how he makes it back. Someone might give him a low-dollar contract next year and maybe there’s something left, but it doesn’t look like it.

Will he falters? I donts know…
seth3120
Wainwright is doing just what he’s paid to do and what they hoped… produced back end starter results. Their problems to this point have a lot more to do with the guys they count on to still produce at a high level. Guys approaching their prime or in the middle of those years.
seth3120
That’s like asking CC from the Yanks to be an ace. Hasn’t been for years. Both commanding a fraction of the money on year to year deals.
kelticknotz
Well Luciano on the IL for 60 days is a forgot conclusion. He’s 19 and never pitched above rookie ball, however Shapiro and Atkins claimed him in the Rule 5 draft which shocked everyone because it means they had to carry him with the Jays for this season. He’s young and he might eventually be good but he is no where near ready for the majors so they put him on 60 days IL and it makes room on the roster and they don’t have to hand him back. Next year he’ll likely be in A ball or maybe AA but no higher, and if he sticks we won’t see him for 2 to 3 yrs at most.
Edwin Jackson on the IL for a supposed back injury is just a way of getting around giving him another start, and Atkins and Shapiro not having to admit he was another of their hiring gems.
How can you explain your payroll for the players on your 25 man roster is 48 million and your salary for players no longer with the Jays is 50 million. for this season, and your fan attendance is down by over 8000 per game so far this year.
Or does anyone at Roger’s really care.
