5:17pm: Haseley’s contract has been formally selected from Triple-A, per a team announcement. He’ll step into the vacancy left by McCutchen, who will miss the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL in his left knee — a devastating blow to the Phils. Righty Victor Arano was moved to the 60-day IL to open a spot on the 40-man roster.
12:45am: The Phillies plan to bring up outfielder Adam Haseley from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia tweets. If activated, Haseley will require a 40-man spot for the Phillies. They’ll need to clear space for him.
The Phillies have a need for outfield help in the wake of the knee sprain Andrew McCutchen suffered in their loss to the Padres on Monday. Between McCutchen’s injury and Odubel Herrera’s recent placement on administrative leave, the Phillies are down to Bryce Harper, the just-acquired Jay Bruce, Scott Kingery, Sean Rodriguez and Phil Gosselin as their outfield-capable players in the majors. The team also has Nick Williams in Lehigh Valley, but it’s primed to turn to Haseley instead.
With draft season in full swing, it’s worth noting the 23-year-old Haseley was a high pick not long ago. The Phillies chose Haseley eighth overall in 2017, but the former University of Virginia outfielder and pitcher hasn’t remained an elite prospect since going pro. MLB.com does not count Haseley among its top 100 farmhands, but it does place him third in Philly’s system, contending there’s potential for him to turn into a “solid” regular center fielder in the bigs. Kiley McDaniel and Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs rank Haseley fifth among Phillies prospects and write he could become a two- to three-WAR player in the majors.
The lefty-swinging Haseley made a case for a promotion at the Double-A level last year and earlier this season, slashing .291/.378/.474 with 13 home runs in 336 plate appearances. Haseley has only walked to the plate 22 times in Triple-A so far, but he has hit .300/.364/.450 in that small sample.

The future is now!

But when is now?
DarkSide830
why prospect evaluators have become so against Hasely is beyond me. he’s seemed to show already that he could be a pretty good player going forward.
suddendepth
It’s because he fell off a cliff at developmental points last season and showed very little in ST. Things are looking up since his AA performance this season. He’ll be a major leaguer for sure but is he trending back up for good? Will his AA success carry over to this temporary call up, or will he regress without much AAA under his belt? The fact that Quinn has been useless has really thrown a wrench into things and accelerated this move. I’m praying for Haseley to have success. The Phils will need it given what Cutch has brought them so far as a table setter this season.
qazer
Scouts are down on Haseley because he isn’t sexy or interesting. Solid at everything, but no raw tools above 60, and there isn’t much to project.
Boring from a scouting POV.
Priggs89
The same reason Yoan Moncada is a bust and Lucas Giolito is a #5 starter at best. People overreact and give up on young talent way too quickly.
htalpo
In what world do you think Moncada is a bust? He is 24 and hitting .283 with a pretty good stat line this year. A bust status would need to have 3-4 years of below average production. With him only having 1 full year of full-time play I would say he has until he is 27 or 28 to determine what his career looks like.

It was sarcasm
htalpo
Lol. Didn’t read the whole comment. My bad.
bilak33
Pretty sure Priggs was stating that they aren’t busts, they just took longer to “arrive” than was expected. Because they didn’t produce immediately, they were labeled busts.
advplee
Exactly. just like Dansby Swanson of the Braves. not all prospects are immediately stars.

I said already they should trade for Billy Hamilton

Haseley has been moved aggressively through the ranks. An OF of Bruce/Haseley/Harper could be interesting to watch. This team needs a hot in the arm, or somewhere.

Given Herrera’s issues, somewhere in the Phillie Universe….Mike Schmidt is laughing his Arss off. Team leader and spokesperson….yeh that’s right!
cpdpoet
(-) comment. Respect your right, but disagree…
PhilsPhan
What’s to disagree with? I’ll admit that at the time of his original comments, I thought Schmidt was way out of line. But it’s hard to argue now that he’s wrong with his main point. Herrera is no leader. It has nothing to do with the language he speaks, and everything to do with him being a horrible example for others and aggravatingly inconsistent. So Rocky not only has the right to make this comment, but their point is also extremely valid.
cpdpoet
Assuming Schmidt is not laughing at the fact Herrera choked his girl to the point of bruising on her neck…..Having a bad day sir…?
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Let’s not kid ourselves Phillies fans. Haseley’s promotion to the majors after about 10 days in AAA is one based on necessity and not merit. The promotion is totally premature. It’s like throwing your two-year-old into the deep end of the pool because he no longer cries in the bath tub.
But in the Phillies defense, it’s not as though they had a lot of other options. Roman Quinn is hurt again. By now he must qualify for Squatter’s Rights on the DL. Our other two #1 draft picks who are outfielders, Moniak and Randolph, are clearly not ready to help now while legitimate concern lingers that neither one will ever be of much help.
Nick Williams? He must have kicked Klentak’s dog to be treated as badly as he has be treated this year. Only the old Duncan and Cheerio yo-yos go up and down more often than Nick. Nick needs a change of scenery. Maybe he’ll get one in the City by the Bay if Klentak is serious about trading for Bumgarner?
NeedsMoreTime
I will bet you a dollar that Haseley, no matter how much he plays or what situation he’s in…outperforms what Nick Williams has done.
Hitting .159 with .205 ops will get most people in the doghouse. You think he’s been treated poorly? Unreal
cpdpoet
Am still a fan of Nicky Franchise, but he’s been given a shot here, now the team has playoff aspirations and he’s just not a piece anymore. Hopefully, he’s shopped to a rebuilding team.
Altherr gone, Cozens done for season and probably gone (contract status) in the off season, Quinn (unfortunately) now a health risk…..It’s no wonder Bruce was acquired.
The 40 man roster is devoid of OF talent now…Maybe it’s best to get Haseley a look in the show. He’s a 23yr old former college player w/ @1000 MILB pa’s. Sure it’s not ideal, but at least the 25man has someone who’s a legit CF.
Prayers to Cutch….
NeedsMoreTime
It’s a good “get the feet wet” situation where nothing is expected of him. Would have been perfect if the phillies were in 5 game winning streak…but he’s not coming up with a ton of expectations so hopefully it’ll be a good learning experience.

“Nick Williams? He must have kicked Klentak’s dog to be treated as badly as he has be treated this year.”
Disagree. Anyone who has watched Nick this year knows he is struggling to find a rhythm. Ultimately going up and down from the minors to the MLB will not help that situation. Nick needs time in AAA to get his confidence back. It’s that simple.

” It’s like throwing your two-year-old into the deep end of the pool because he no longer cries in the bath tub.” Love it, permission to use?
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Sure, Brian., have at. My dugout is your dugout.
DarkSide830
absolutely absurd comment. obviously this promotion was due to nessicity, but if Haseley is so unready to be promoted and has in no way earned it, why isnt Lane Adams up instead?
qazer
Disagree. Robinson and Adams are both solid AAAA types that could be promoted. Picking Haseley over them is both a vote of confidence in his skills, and also in his head that even if he struggles in the bigs it won’t hurt his progress.
Williams needs to play every day. No place for him on this roster ATM.
Short59
Nick Williams hasn’t been able to hit his way out of a wet paper bag all season and is lucky to have a job. I still like him but you’ve gotta be able to produce in the majors.
