TODAY: Neshek has been placed on the 10-day IL, the Phillies announced today. Left-hander Ranger Suarez was called up from Triple-A to take Neshek’s roster spot.
YESTERDAY: Phillies reliever Pat Neshek suffered a left hamstring strain in the team’s loss to the Nationals on Wednesday night. He’s likely heading to the 10-day injured list as a result, manager Gabe Kapler said (via Scott Lauber of Philly.com).
This will be the second IL placement of 2019 for Neshek, who went down May 25 with rotator cuff inflammation and just returned June 16. The 38-year-old hasn’t been available enough to the Phillies’ liking since they reunited with him on a two-year, $16.25MM pact entering 2018, nor has he been as effective as the team hoped.
Shoulder and forearm problems shelved Neshek until last July after he signed his deal. Dating back to then, the soft-tossing Neshek has posted a 3.46 ERA/4.32 FIP with 5.18 K/9 and 1.3 BB/9 in 41 2/3 innings. Neshek was coming off a 62 1/3 inning-season of 1.59 ERA/1.86 FIP ball with 9.96 K/9 against .87 BB/9 divided between Philly and Colorado when the Phillies re-signed him.
The Phillies already have key relievers in David Robertson, Seranthony Dominguez, Adam Morgan and Tommy Hunter on the IL. Like Neshek, Robertson and Hunter recently joined the Phillies as pricey free-agent signings, though they also haven’t quite worked out for the club yet.
Pax vobiscum
Borderline incompetence for the GM to rely on this group of relievers. Meanwhile chirping crickets from the Phillies front office.
DarkSide830
the group was pretty promising at the start of the year. problem is the same with all promising pitchers though. at the very least most were okay when healthy. they will be back, and i wouldnt make any rash moves yet.
Ruben_Tomorrow 2
It’s starting to look like last season when the Phillies collapsed and the Braves ran away with the division. Phillies better do something before it gets out of hand.
jleve618
I’d fire Gabe now.
DarkSide830
look at the roster and say that again. this team actually has talent now. I really cant blame Klentak if this offense cant carry even Eflin to wins, tye fact that Nola has just been mediocre so far this season, or the fact that half of the bullpen is on the IL.
MC77
The bullpen is trash and the starting rotation isn’t much better. The Phillies have lost 7.5 games in the standings in the last 3.5 weeks. If the front office twiddles their thumbs into mid July, the season will be over before the bullpen guys get back.
DarkSide830
the bullpen is trash because half of it is on the IL, and despite all of those injuries, it’s actually looked better at times then the offense for the most part. what i dont know is how they upgrade it. how many outfielders and bench bats do they need, and would they really have any effect.
bravosfan4life
Chirping crickets?
Yalls got that overrated bum bryce harper for a cool 330 million
No chirping in your front office
owg666
Unless they get hot all at once they’re destined to be .500 again. All that stupid money. How ironic would it be for Harper if the Nats pass the Phillies ??
brucebochyisthemarlboroman
As much as this stings that they’re playing the way they are, I cant imagine they don’t go out and get the pieces they need to make this the race that everyone expects. Am I concerned, yes, but not panicking.
DarkSide830
there was no reason we should have let Keuchel get to Atlanta, I guess I’d have to admit that as a failure in hindsight. (i prefered them go after Kimbrel) however, they have the willingness to spend money and deal prospects, something Liberty Media hasnt shown. The Braves have gotten lucky with injuries thus far, and who knows, it may come due soon.
chippahawk
So you revamped 1/2 your lineup and threw 400 million into the wind thinking you would just yankee your way into the playoffs.. Newsflash: keuchel wanted Atlanta as much as they wanted him..
Braves are back to their 90s ways for the next decade; time to make up for those lost titles.
DarkSide830
and if he wanted Atlanta sk be it, but i would have at least felt better to hear that we offered more and he simply wanted to go to Atlanta better.
HartnellDown
Or time to blow it year after year again.
bucketbrew35
“Braves are back to their 90s ways for the next decade; time to make up for those lost titles.”
Or maybe they’ll just get lucky one time in another 14 consecutive tries.
tac3
I’m not even sure their fans know about the 14 division titles… since they stopped showing up for the playoffs.
chippahawk
Meh, Waters and Pache yet to come.. the surface is just getting tickled. When you have donaldson creating a cog, you know you have a great problem.
Could and should easily be 8-10 games out in front right now a the least..
DarkSide830
The Braves system is considered one of the best in baseball and i still believe its underrated. its honestly quite scary how good they are now and how good their prospects are at the same time. that being said, “should easily be 8-10 games put in front” makes absolutely no sense in a league and division this strong. Nats and Mets will not make the playoffs, but will get their wins, and so will most of the other teams Atlanta plays. if you really think they should be though, perhaps they have some issues of their own, fixed recently or not.
chippahawk
They’ve lost/blown what now, over 20 games they’ve had the lead late.. That’s all I was referring to by the lead they could have in the division so yes it doesn’t come without validity..
tac3
I know, the Phillies don’t have anyone coming in their pipleline. Neither do the dodgers, or any of the other contenders… just the Braves do
DarkSide830
comparatively, but both of those teams have some upgrades incoming. the Phillies have Moniak and Haseley as solid OF options in the future, and the Dodgers have Keibert, among others. do the braves have a lot more? yes, but its not like they have no one coming.
bucketbrew35
“I know, the Phillies don’t have anyone coming in their pipleline. Neither do the dodgers, or any of the other contenders… just the Braves do.”
Bohm is roughly a year away. They’ll either go forward with him or go all out for Bryant.
suddendepth
Or Rendon.
DarkSide830
the Cubs are not trading Bryant
Mr. Sarcasm
I am not a Kapler fan by any stretch of the imagination, the lack of fixing the bullpen and acquiring starters is on the front office. They sit on their hands thinking VV, Eickhoff and Pivetta are going to have breakout seasons. Three wrongs there. You need pitching to win. Arrieta is a bust, Nola is failing this season which let’s it all fall on Eflin. Front office epic fail.
tac3
Ehh, they revamped the offense to carry the team. They made educated guesses on the staff. I’m not giving them a free pass but they made significant strides from where the team was last year. They tried to sign Corbin…look how that turned out.
DarkSide830
Corbin will be on the IL in no time. there is no way he will be worth that money. that money can be better spent paying off Greinke’s contract.
nentwigs
Now substituting for Pat Neshack:
Here he comes =
A fiery horse with the speed of light,
A cloud of dust and a hearty hi-o silver
The Lone Ranger Suarez,
Has been called up from AAA !!!
baseballdad37
They might want to think about bringing back David Hernandez.

Signs showing now from last season
– overmatched in dugout – spin it by leadership – not a winning culture.
DarkSide830
those are statements are all vague and subjective
ericl
I don’t get the Phillies continuing to bring up minor league starters & using them as relievers.. It has failed with Cole Irvin. Ranger Suarez hasn’t had a ton of success with it. Drew Anderson struggled when coming out of the bullpen. It is a different mindset for these guys & they haven’t adapted very well. This tactic is not going to work. If the Phillies want to fix their bullpen, then they have to go out and get some real relievers.
