Padres ace Chris Paddack, optioned to the minors June 12, will return to start in the majors this Saturday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
It was an eyebrow-raising decision when the Padres demoted Paddack a week ago, though the move quickly became understandable when it was revealed they did it to give him a breather. The 23-year-old right-hander has already pitched 65 2/3 innings this season, which comes close to the professional-high 90 frames the former Tommy John surgery recipient amassed in the minors in 2018.
One of the game’s elite prospects entering the season, Paddack has lived up to the billing thus far. He owns a 3.15 ERA/3.73 FIP with tremendous strikeout and walk rates (9.87 K/9 and 1.78 BB/9) through the first 12 starts and 65 2/3 innings of his major league career. But Paddack has stumbled somewhat since the outset of May, when his ERA sat at just 1.55, which likely played into the Padres’ decision to send him to the Single-A level on a short-term basis.
Upon Paddack’s return, he’ll rejoin a team which continues to hang around the National League’s playoff race. Winners of four in a row, the Padres are only 2 1/2 games back of the NL’s second wild-card spot at the moment.

It takes a weird kind of pride to call out Pete Al9mao battling for rookie of the year and then get sent down to face AAA lineups. hope it doesn’t affect his development
DarkSide830
it’ll hopefully help keep him healthy, which should positively effect his development.
Wolverines2
He didn’t face any lineups, and he didn’t go to AAA.
WAYoverratedbrodie
My bad. your right, got the situation wrong
Wolverines2
To your larger point I think,
I’m hopeful that he stays confident despite the recent struggles. He needs a slider!
sdpadsfan11
Paddack is on an innings limit this season. The velocity on his fastball has dipped a bit and the command of his whole arsenal has been off; which most likely indicaded that he needed some rest.
Paddack is a fierce competitor and I agree with you that he is a little strange.
lowtalker1
He didn’t go to triple a. He went to high a to hang out for a week.
kingkooba
It takes even a bigger stud to call out Pete and then go out and dominate his team.
mrpadre19
Um…he was sent to Single A and it was planned months ago.
It was ALL about controlling innings.
If Alonso was recovering from TJ surgery he may have faced similar precautions.
Mrivers
In all fairness, his brashness wasn’t totally without merit. He deserved it as much as Alonso.
stansfield123
If they shut him down for physical reasons, why didn’t they put him on the IL and continue paying him a major league salary? Sounds like another grievance waiting to happen.
Polisciprof
He wasn’t hurt; he was fatigued. And, because he has minor league options, they can send him down whenever they want without even giving a reason.
lowtalker1
Why would it be? Boras paddack and the padres have spoken about this. They are fine with it bc of paddacks limited innings last year and just coming off tjs
DarkSide830
for a team that untimely is not contending, id really be more cautious then this. id keep him down for about 4 starts time, while getting him regular outings of about 1 inning just to keep on track.
qbert1996
except they are contending? 2.5 back of the 2nd wildcard and he’s arguably their ace.
lowtalker1
Have you seen his last 4 starts?
kingkooba
Did you see his first 4 starts?
DarkSide830
with a guy just coming off TJ you have to care about the bigger pitcher, but such a move can pay off in the short term as well. the Padres are not real contenders, when it comes down to it. chances the wild cards will come from the central and east, but regardless, he could get injured around the end of the year and that’s about it right there. ATL, for example, could very well see Soroka go down in September, but could benefit with him taking a 1-inning start here or there. the point is, regardless, he will need the rest, and more likely then not, it will have no effect on how far the Padres go this year.
Mrivers
Arguably? Only Lucchesi even remotely approaches his talent.
lowtalker1
Luchessi? No it think you misspelled strahm

Pierre Alfonzo?

He sounds fast…

Alonso
clepto
He has a type-first, think-later approach.
Padres r knocking on the door
Paddack wasn’t hurt, so you can’t put him on the IL. He is on a strict pitch count/innings limit, but the Padres are trying to keep him up all seasin, and not mess with his service time, when they can easily do so.They made sure that it was less than the 20 days it would require to lose a year of eligibility. He didn’t pitch when sent down, and he wasn’t sent to AAA, but to the high A affiliate who is just up the road from Petco park. The Padres treat their prospects right.
antibelt
He’ll be out more than 20 days before the end of the season. He’ll be at his innings high within the next month. No way they don’t work their way into getting an extra year.
DarkSide830
people will whine about it in the end, but for the sake of the pitch count i would have to imagine the best plan of action would be to keep him down for at least a month total, spaced out over something like 3 trips. its conceivable those trips end up under 20 days, but i think his health should be a bigger comcern to both sides then service time. if he is under contract for another year, but is saved from over a year on the IL, it has to be a win.
Smelly_Cobb
the Paddy Daddy is back!!
jorge78
Nothing wrong with saving some service time along with that “breather.”
Show Me Your Tatis
Unless he spends 20 days in the minors it doesn’t count towards him losing service time.
Anyway, it’s clear as day that the current Padres regime isn’t interested in doing the service time thing.
jbigz12
7 days before the AS break. Not hard to imagine he gets shut down some time in August at this rate. I don’t think they are “playing the game” with him but he may very well end up losing that year. Unless they transition him to the BP late this year to keep his innings in check. Though I suspect that would only be an option if they were serious WC contenders.
Show Me Your Tatis
If he is shut down in August they could send him down and say that they are doing that to clear a space on the roster. But once September begins that excuse doesn’t work cuz rosters are expanded.
Either way, after seeing how they handled Margot, Renfroe, Lucchesi and especially Tatis, it’s obvious they aren’t interested in “playing the game” as you mentioned.
njbirdsfan
All I know is that Alonso is going to the ASG and Paddack isn’t.
But you know what, congratulations for one whole start. Maybe you should go to the HOF of one starts like Humber and Heston.
csspackler
Is that really all you know?
You should get out more.
cmtaylor98
I think at the end of the year he gets out on the 60 day IL with shoulder fatigue. He doesn’t lose service time & Padres don’t lose a roster spot.
kingkooba
Lmao are you positive about that? He’s 5th in all star voting for 1st basemen and they only take the top three..so I have to ask, what do you actually know?

The Bailiff

Lil Taker (Mark Callaway’s doppelgänger) made a cardinal mistake calling out Pete Alonso, it seemed like he was more concerned with accolades than helping his team win. I was there for his first home start, he was pumped up, albeit as a rook he shouldn’t stare MLB hitters down. He is too emotional, gets rattled when he’s not on, he scofflaws and serves up pus.
I hope he can work it out, I’m a lifelong Padres fan, I just call it like I see it.
pinstripes17
he dominated the mets after he said that…

Calling out future Rookie of Year was clown move by Padday
padreforlife
“Dominated the Mets” How about Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies, and Giants ambushed him.
