The Padres will promote highly regarded pitching prospect Logan Allen, according to MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell. The southpaw is expected to make a start tomorrow.
Acquired as part of the 2015 Craig Kimbrel deal, Allen has steadily climbed the prospect charts over the past several seasons. The former eighth-round pick, now 22 years of age, cracked most top-100 charts entering the current campaign.
Allen hasn’t exactly been at his most impressive in 2019, though the offensively robust PCL surely hasn’t helped his stat sheet. Through 57 2/3 innings, he carries a 5.15 ERA with 63 strikeout sand 22 walks.
This continues the Padres’ season-long strategy of rotating up young arms to the MLB roster. That approach hasn’t led to much in the way of stable starting pitching, though it has allowed the team preserve its talent base while trying to compete. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the results have been uneven.
Another over rated former Sox prospect.
Lol…, he was an 8th round draft pick. He came over in a 4 for 1 trade. I don’t think he was overrated.
When you trade an all star away because you can’t afford him anymore and you get four guys back in that trade, you’re hoping for a couple of future Major Leaguers and one of the four to be very good. It’s kind of a crapshoot. That’s why you get four guys LOL
They could afford him (padres) they traded him because that was their best trade piece to restock the farm.
When you’re tanking and rebuilding and selling off you’re expensive players, you
“can’t afford” to pay 15 million dollars a year for a 1 trick pony closer.
Padres could afford Kimbrel just fine. They traded him because Boston overpaid in prospects (or at least it seemed that way at the time) and because they really didn’t need Kimbrel.
4 for 1 that’s netted nothing
Guerra’s a great hitting prospect with a sure glove. Only, they’re now training him to pitch. And Asuaje’s a toolsy utility guy who can hit…who couldn’t hit consistently. And Margot…the speedy leadoff hitting centerfielder every team dreams of…who’s now batting 9th behind the pitcher, when he gets off the bench.
But don’t question Preller’s genius. He’s our savior!
That’s why you get four. It’s a crapshoot.
he’s highly rated and deserves to be based on his preformance throughout the minor league ranks.
Literally cannot be any worse than Margavicious. Or any of the starters recently for that matter. Just wondering if John Cena will be in attendance…?
He will be, but you won’t see him.
Best comment I’ve seen here in a while
Been pretty garbage in AAA this year, even if it is like pitching on the moon. Still, the Padres are in desperate need of starters and now Logan can finally get a shot to show what’s he’s made of.
He hasn’t been great this year at AAA but he’s been really solid throughout his MiLB career. Also this year has been weighed down by his first two starts of the year in which he allowed 12 runs in five total innings. I hope he’s solid for the Friars… I have him in my deep dynasty league. But he will probably shuttle between the Majors and minors this year.
He has given up 14 earned runs in 15 IP in his last 3 starts. Its not just his 1st 2 starts of the season when he gave up 11 earned runs in 5 IP in which he has been crushed.
Paddack, Strahm, and Large Marge out. Allen, Lamet, and Stroman in.
Buddy Reed, Andres Munoz and Esteury Ruiz now the only Padres top 30 prospects at risk of being taken in Rule 5 this winter. Still a lot of guys off the top 30 however.
Munoz will likely be up before the end of the year. Ruiz likely will be protected. Reed is not very good so could see him being available
I doubt they let their #13 prospect go unprotected….
Reed is trying to hit a HR every at bat when he should be using that speed of his to turn line drive singles into doubles and doubles into triples.
His swing is long and loopy. Shorten up his swing and he could be very good.
Believe Hudson Potts is as well.
There will be several tough decisions even outside of the top 30.

Lesser extent:
Keel, Yardley, Kohlwey, Radke, and Hansel Rodriguez
Nope. Potts was 18 when he was drafted. He has another year to go.
Gettys, Ona, Yardley were all available this year. I don’t see anyone taking any of them in the major league portion.
Ona wasn’t available last offseason. He will be this coming offseason though.
He has an agreement with John Cena that he would be there for his debut.
Can’t wait to see It!
He has been getting rocked in AAA, but the Padres really have no choice but to call him up and hope. Will John Cena be there for his first start?
Showcasing him?
Right. Against the team that’s hit the most HR’s in the NL. If they’re trying to “showcase” him, this would be the worst time to do it.
Also, the Padres just finished a four-game circus of a series in Colorado that broke all kinds of offensive records, so the entire pitching staff is taxed. They need any help they can get. I’m really happy for Logan and optimistic that he’ll do really well, but their motivations for selecting his contract have nothing to do with “showcasing” him.
One last thing – Logan Allen will be a core part of the Padres pitching staff for the next several years. He’s a stud.
Studs don’t give up 14 runs in 15 IP over their last 3 starts in the minors.
Johan Santana did. Ditto Corey Kluber.
Rick Sutcliffe, Mario Soto, Orel Hershiser, Mickey Lolich did quite poorly in the minors.. So, maybe you should expand your definition of stud.
TIL that a 3-game sample size in the PCL determines the fate of a player’s entire career.
Bingo. Padre fans go scorched earth on bad stats in minors and do parades for good ones
