The Padres announced that they’ve designated outfielder Alex Dickerson for assignment on Wednesday. His spot on the roster will go to righty Miguel Diaz, whose reinstatement from the 60-day injured list had already been announced by the team.
Dickerson, 29, has collected three singles in 19 trips to the plate this season in his first action since the 2016 season. Back injuries wiped out Dickerson’s 2017 campaign, and he underwent Tommy John surgery last spring, which cost him the 2018 season as well. Prior to those significant injury troubles, Dickerson looked like an intriguing late bloomer; through 285 plate appearances in 2016, he hit .257/.333/.455 with 10 homers, 16 doubles, a pair of triples and five stolen bases.
There’s a known outfield crunch in San Diego, however, with Wil Myers, Manuel Margot, Franchy Cordero, Franmil Reyes, Hunter Renfroe and the recently promoted Josh Naylor all vying for at-bats on the big league roster (although Cordero is injured at the moment). That glut of outfielders ultimately left Dickerson as the odd man out, though his prior success and strong .372/.469/.606 slash through 113 Triple-A plate appearances this season could very well lead to interest from another club. The Padres will have a week to either trade Dickerson or attempt to pass him through outright waivers.

Now, they just need to get rid of the others. Next ones up? Perdomo and pirela.
Kinsler as well.
At least Wieck was optioned.
Steve Adams
Kinsler is hitting .268/.326/.524 since May 1. I recognize that the overall numbers are still awful and Padres fans badly want to see Urias in an everyday role (understandable), but I don’t think Kinsler is at much risk of getting booted given his recent play and two-year contract.
kingtopher
He just doesn’t really have a spot. It’s crazy to be paying that much for a bench player who can only play one position. Terrible signing.
lowtalker1
Preller and company are not following the plan they told the fans when they signed him. Sure, machado changes things, but we were feed that kinsler would adopt a more utility role when it was time from tatis.
Koamalu
The Padres are undoubtedly hoping that Kinsler has a huge start to June to follow a decent May so that they can trade him. So far so good as he has produced at a .364/.462/.545/1.007 clip in his 3 starts in June.
He is not part of the future plans and he is a really bad influence on the young players in that clubhouse. Saying F you and flipping off the fans is not the example you want your veterans displaying. His flippant manner on the field is not a good example for them either.
He leads the league in baserunning blunders and his defense, the major reason the Padres signed him, been below league average since joining the team.
Kinsler will be gone soon and Urias will be the 2B for the next 5-6 years in San Diego alongside Hosmer, Machado, and Tatis.
ShieldF123
So he’s a bad fielder and a crappy clubhouse presence who is hitting better but still not above average?
Yep definitely a trade candidate….
Juicemane 2019
The team who won the world series last year says you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Wont trade him while we’re contending for a wild card tho….because that doesn’t make any sense….
antibelt
Giants already put their claim in.
Jean Matrac
He was DFA’ed, not placed on waivers. And even if he was, I doubt the Giants would be interested. Yastrzemski looks better as a starter, and they probably prefer Austin as 4th OF. And there’s no sense in trying to get him through waivers for MiLB depth for obvious reasons.
gmenfan
Since he wasn’t outright released, there’s a good chance that he’s been placed on waivers as part of the DFA process.
You’re right though, the Giants have mo need for him. Probably more about Farhan’s penchant for waiver claims on lottery ticket outfielders.
Jean Matrac
That’s speculation at best. They’re probably trying to trade him, which is why he’s been DFA’ed and not placed on waivers. There’s a better chance that if he is waived it won’t happen for the 10 days that’s allowed for them to find a trade partner.
jdgoat
Outfielder on waivers? They claimed him yesterday.
DarkSide830
*caugh*giants*caugh*
Jean Matrac
That joke is tired.
gmenfan
Nope, still funny. As a Giants fan, humor is all there is right now.
Jean Matrac
No. It was funny the first dozen or so times I saw it. Now it’s become totally predictable that someone will trot it out making it trite, and no longer funny. Who was it that got DFA’ed a week or so ago with the same tired joke repeated, that resulted in no Giant’s claim?
kenleyfornia2
Its not tired when it actually happens. May be a joke to you but its been very real this season
Jean Matrac
When was the last time it happened? This tired joke is perpetuating a myth. Yes, Zaidi made a lot of claims during ST, but he’s made only one since. and that was claiming Altherr on May 11th.
ShieldF123
Andrew Moore says hello
Jean Matrac
Moore is not an outfielder.
DarkSide830
its not even a joke really. Dickerson has much more upside then a lot of the guys theyve claimed already this year.
Jean Matrac
More upside than Conner Joe or Aaron Altherr? So what? They got a look and now they’re gone. It’s debatable that Dickerson has more upside than Austin or Yastzremski, the guys they kept.
gmenfan
By the way, what’s a “caugh” ?
DarkSide830
my a good representation of my ability to spell, it seems.
64' Yanks
He sounds like a possible candidate to sign with the Yankees.
DarkSide830
better then Tauchman I’d say.
lowtalker1
In all honesty. Dickerson needs daily at bats and it doesn’t scream Yankees, if anything it screams Cleveland.
iamrobertkrogh
He’ll land in Seattle
leftcoaster
Dickerson can flat out hit. Somebody will give him a shot. He’ll likely end up in battery chucker land.
Gwynning's Anal Lover
If he’s still injured, the Yankees should sign him.
