It’s been a while since the last update on the Cubs’ Ian Happ, who has yet to appear in a Major League game this season after he was optioned to Triple-A out of spring training. The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma, though, offers some insight into Happ’s mindset and process as he works towards rejoining the Cubs. Happ, 24, was a productive big-leaguer in his first two seasons with the Cubs, but was plagued by strikeouts and inconsistency, neither of which is an uncommon issue for a young player. During his time in Triple-A, Happ has focused on refining his approach and retooling his swing with an eye on contributing to a contending Cubs team in the second half. After striking out in 33.8% of his first 875 plate appearances, Happ has that number down to 27.3% in the minors this year, while increasing his ground ball rate as a result of a flattened swing designed to better cover elevated pitches. With Daniel Descalso and Addison Russell getting the majority of the second base reps and Albert Almora Jr. in center field, there looks to be an avenue for Happ to help to the Cubs in the near future, but it appears that the Cubs are content with a patient approach to Happ’s situation.
Here’s the latest on a handful of National League clubs…
- Good news for Rockies shortstop Trevor Story, who recently landed on the IL with a thumb injury that was said to keep Story out for “multiple weeks.” Per the Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders, however, Story is progressing faster than anticipated and could indeed return to the Rockies after the allotted 10 days on the injured list. That would put Story on track to rejoin his team on June 29, which is certainly a welcome turn of events in Colorado. Surely, that’s no guarantee and the Rockies won’t rush their star back, but it’s sure to inspire more optimism than the original timeline.
- The Braves’ bullpen will get a boost this week, with left-hander Sean Newcomb expected to return from the injured list ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Cubs, according to Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He showed promising signs in his most recent rehab outing and should be ready to pitch for the first time since taking a J.T. Realmuto liner to the neck last weekend. Though Mike Foltynewicz was demoted, thus leaving a void in the Braves’ starting rotation, that won’t be filled by Newcomb, who will remain in a relief role for the foreseeable future.
- Pirates catcher Francisco Cervelli could rejoin the team as early as next weekend, tweets Adam Berry of MLB.com. The 33-year-old catcher, who has been on the injured list since May 25 after suffering a concussion, could start a rehab assignment in the next few days and return to action for the Bucs shortly thereafter. Certainly, the Pirates have kept their heads above water with a catching tandem of Elias Diaz and Jacob Stallings, both of whom have thus far outperformed Cervelli, who struggled in the season’s opening months.

Franco needs the Happ treatment.
bravesfan
I thought for sure Newcomb would take folty’s spot. But I can see how it’s difficult to change a good thing. He’s killing it in the bullpen
skip tracey
Agreed. He by far has been better on the pen.
jhuck5
bet Bryce Wilson will get the start.
tharrie0820
Enjoy it while you can. If Newcomb has proven anything, it’s that’s he’s a train wreck just waiting to happen

My gosh!

Oh look a troll. Just another person jealous of the Braves having success.

The cubs should use Happ to bolster the bullpen even more.
Happ to San Diego for Yates and Erlin.
Similar deal as to the Brad Hand framework, two bullpen arms for a former top prospect.
He would be the answer in CF for San Diego if he can play there everyday without a rotation. Switch hitter who is durable. The combination of Myers, Margot and injuries to Cordero & Jankowski have hurt SD and their OF equation.
OG Spike
Padres have enough OFers dont they?
chicagofan1978
Be careful people are gonna say that’s not enough for Yates, Happ has no value yadda yadda
bleacherbum
No I’m a realistic Padre fan, that would be a fair comp to the Hand/Mejia deal.
@OG Spike:
The Padres have a lot of corner OF’s, Renfroe/Reyes and Myers should and usually all stay in the corners.
Margot has been given so many chances to lock down CF and hasn’t. Cordero has been his number one threat coming up the pipeline but he can’t stay healthy. Jankowski comes back soon however he is a Punch and Judy 4th OF at best who can play a great defensive CF.
Happ would be a gamble most Padre fans would be willing to take, a 24 year old switch hitting CF who can also play the corners or INF if needed. Gives insurance if Margot can’t ever figure it or if Urias busts.
chicagofan1978
Still think it may take another minor leaguer along with Happ.
zappaforprez
Because Happ doesn’t have that much value. It’s blatant. That IS an overpay. You sure you follow the MLB?
mac1brad
The Padres would laugh at that offer!
bleacherbum
You need a controllable guy that fits the timeline.
What other 24 year old switching hitting OF’er with pop/speed and playoff exipirence
bleacherbum
It’s a matter of playing time and stability.
I think he fits in San Diego personally, there is no ready replacement for the putrid play coming from that position currently.
And no, Michael Getty’s isn’t it, nor is scrap heap guys that are available now like Leonys Martin.
More would have to be added to Happ obviously but he would be the “Mejia” in this trade proposal
pinstripes17
Padres would laugh at that, Happ hasn’t proven anything at the major league (or even AAA) level yet.
Banesays
Pinstripes you clearly have never seen Happ play…
Priggs89
Have you?
Priggs89
This isn’t even close to the Brad Hand framework… Mejia wasn’t a “former top prospect,” and he wasn’t sent to the minors after ~900 plays appearances for sucking. He was still a top 30 prospect in all of baseball with a ton of value at the time of the trade.
Banesays
Priggs, yes, I have. I wouldn’t exactly say he’s “sucked” for 900 plate* appearances. He has value. He’s versatile, he switch hits, he’s young and has speed. It’s not like he hasn’t had success. He has his flaws which he is clearly working on in Iowa. If it wasn’t for the Cubs paying Descalso a 2 year guaranteed deal, he’d be on the ML club right now.
stan lee the manly
He may have value, but Yates has been one of the most valuable relievers in all of baseball and he’s not a rental. Contenders will be lining up at the door for him.
Happ’s value isn’t anywhere near that level after being sent down to AAA for this long. He would complement a package, not lead it. Unless the Padres are going for quantity over quality, an offer led by Happ will get outbid.
Priggs89
He has value, just not a lot of it anymore. He was sent down because he’s not good enough to hit major league pitching on a consistent basis. Being blocked by Descalso is not a good thing – they wouldn’t have signed a mediocre player like Descalso to a 2 year deal if Happ was an asset to the major league team.
And his versatility is SEVERELY overhyped. Just about every player that isn’t a catcher or first baseman is “versatile” enough to play a bad outfield like Happ.
reneaguerra
A .228 hitting minor leaguer who strikes out a ton for an all star closer. I’ll leave it at that.
legendsoh
Not a Cubs fan or a Padres supporter but there is no way the Padres would trade Yates and Erlin for Happ. The guy has a huge hole in his swing for one but two he is not even up for a mediocrce hitting Cubs team. They have a team BA of .251 presently. There will be virtually no closers available at the deadline it appears so if Yates were made available–there would be an actual bidding war. Would guess that the Red Sox would be licking their chops. Look, maybe Happ figures it out someday but the return at this moment would be a lot more than that.
mac1brad
Guessing both Will Smith and Shane Greene will be available at the deadline. Both are having great years!
Priggs89
“After striking out in 33.8% of his first 875 plate appearances, Happ has that number down to 27.3% in the minors this year”
Not really what I’d call a fair comparison… Those 875 plate appearances were in the big leagues, not the minors. Prior to this year, he never struck out more than 23.6% of the time at any of his stops in the minors… If anything, I’d argue his strikeout problem is worse than it was before.
kylegocougs
Exactly my thoughts
Priggs89
Hopefully the thumb injury isn’t a nagging one that saps Story of his power.
spinach
“Surely, that’s no guarantee and the Rockies won’t rush their star back”
This doesn’t make a ton of sense.
DarkSide830
Newcomb is up there with the most disliked people in this site. all he did was be a viable 2-4 for about two years, yet no one even will say he’s a serviceable 5. i get there’s issues, but how many guys are currently starting that have just as many issues and have not been able to pitch as well as Newcomb?
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I’m pretty sure the answer is no, but…could the Pirates just pay Cervelli his full salary and tell him to stay at home on his couch for right now even after he comes off the IL? Similar to what the Cubs are doing with Zobrist? Anything?
Because if not, and I don’t like saying this, the Pirates should DFA him rather than risk losing Stallings (or carrying 3 catchers).
There is no way the team can count on Frankie going forward and there is zero depth behind Stallings, so they can’t risk losing him.
chicagofan1978
The cubs are not even paying Zobrist, so your whole post is invalid. Cervellu is not even that bad. They could just dfa him is he was that bad in which case they basically would be paying his whole salary
Cobe821
The whole post isn’t invalid, that’s just moronic. If he was incorrect about Zobrist, fine. But the rest of the post is totally validated. He already said pay Cervelli (not Cervellu as you called him) his full salary, so you stating “they basically would be paying his whole salary” is redundant. Play semantics if you want but those statements are the same.
He is correct about the catcher depth in Pittsburgh also, so that’s validated. Please explain how “your whole post is invalid”
chicagofan1978
I’m almost positive his post was edited after the first sentence. I didn’t read anything about them dfa’ing CERVELLI. Sorry my fat fingers hit the u instead of I.
Mendoza Line 215
It seems to me that the Chisenhall situation could be similiar since they do not seem to be in any hurry to get him into the ML.
I am surprised that they did not leave Cervelli on the IL as long as possible.
Diaz is hitting and I think that Stallings is a good backup. They somehow got him through waivers earlier in the year.I doubt that they could again.
I share your concern about Stallings.
They may drop a relief pitcher for a short time as there are several who should not be in the ML.They will want to get Cervelli a number of games like they are doing for Dickerson to see if there is any trade demand for him if only to cut his salary.
I doubt that they would ask him to go home and pay him.Zobrist is a totally different situation as he has young kids.
megaj
Interesting choice the Cubs have made so far. Obviously, even with his strikeout problems, if Happ is given the same amount of abs as Almora, Cargo, Delscalso, and even Heyward, he would be a more offensively productive player than ALL of them. He is without a doubt an upgrade to their entire bench, so obviously somebody is going to be trade bait here soon. I would rather they DFA Descalso and Cargo and just bring up Happ and Hoerner when he gets healthy to finish the season.
tonyinmunhall
Cervelli needs to retire. Too many concussions
Not good for his future.
