id say Giles vs Kimbrel is an interesting debate. for a team that is a borderline playoff team, it may be hard for them to deal with the losses Kimbrel creates while ramping up. however, that gamble may pay off in spades in september and october.
bravesiowafan
Cost is $ vs prospects which is more valuable to the team
bravesiowafan
Cost is $ vs prospects. Comes down to which is more important to each team
petrie000
Most everybody these days would rather spend the money if it’s just short term.
GMs are also pretty gun-shy about trading for closers. One bad inning late in the season and everybody second guesses you, including ownership.
EthanOrioles
I think the Athletics or even the Rays are a good fit. Both are trying to hold on, and like you said, it would be tough to deal with losses, but I don’t think they would sign Craig if they weren’t expecting it. We’ve seen it before (Greg Holland and the Nats) But its a good gamble for when your fighting for a wild card spot
edog83
This is my first time in chat, I’ve submitted 2 questions with no response but I see some people have had multiple questions answered! Who are these moderators forwarding these questions??? Seems a little bias to me!!!!!!
edog83
Not to mention that the so called moderators let a non baseball nonsense quote through!!!!!!! What a joke to us baseball loving people!!!!!
All Minnesota Sports
Guys. There’s lots of questions out there. Maybe you’re not submitting the right questions.
Cat Mando
edog83……….
There are often 1000+ people in the “room” submitting questions. There are no “so called moderators”. the writers select the questions themselves. It’s also been established via polls in the chats that non-baseball questions, especially of a humorous nature, are welcomed by the majority.
The vast majority of questions will not get answered.
bravesiowafan
This is exactly why chats should focus on baseball. It’s a baseball site. We wasted 5+ questions on Giles vs kimbrel when I’m positive there were better questions
refereemn77
Uh, those WERE baseball questions… In the words of George Carlin, “Calm down. Have some dip.”
Phanatic 2022
On any given chat there are 1000+ people all submitting multiple questions. So over one hour in one chat you are crying that your two questions weren’t answered. Is it possible your questions may not be as insightful to others as they are to you? Or is it possible they didn’t even see them? I’m guessing mental calculations are not involved in your profession. Would you like some fries with that 🙂
twentyforty
You’re asking a guy with no real connections or insight to answer your question and upset if he doesn’t? You could just as easily ask your mailman for his opinion.
refereemn77
If you don’t think they have connections or insight, why in the hell are you even here. Some people are really f—— stupid.
petrie000
The bias is more towards subject matter than people. The moderators want to answer questions they think are pertinent to current events, or they just find interesting.
kcus stnaig
Ask a question about the Giants or Madison, they seem to get answered the most. Then slip in your real question at the end.
getright11
Yaaaaawn
edog83
I’ll return for a chat 1 more time, If my questions aren’t forwarded by the moderators and other people get multiple questions, I’ll never return to chat and will let everyone I know to not use this website again!!! I had legit questions also!!!
hockeyjohn
edoig, as was stated before, there are often 1000 + people in the chat with many asking questions. Sometimes my questions get answered, other times they don’t. Even when my questions don’t get answered, I still find the chats interesting. Don’t pitch a temper tantrum because your questions didn’t get picked this time.
Cat Mando
edog83
Once again, there are not any moderators to forward the questions. The writers scan the hundreds to thousand plus questions they get and answer as many as the can in about an hour.
If your panties are in a bunch over the odds being against your question(s) being picked is that upsetting I would say you are more of the problem (you sound entitled) than the system and don’t let the door hit ya on the way out.
sascoach2003
Calm down, Francis. I’ve been attending chats and submitted hundreds of questions, and haven’t had one answered yet. I’m not going to throw a fit, badmouth the site or hosts, or anything else juvenile. It’s not that crucial.
bravesiowafan
It’s not entitlement to want to have your question answered when there are several non baseball answers and several repeat questions every chat.
Cat Mando
When he throws a hissy-fit after one chat and then follows up with “I’ll return for a chat 1 more time, If my questions aren’t forwarded by the moderators and other people get multiple questions, I’ll never return to chat and will let everyone I know to not use this website again!!!” that sounds a bit like entitlement…an “adult” version of “if we don’t play by my rules I’m gonna take my ball and go home”
bravesiowafan
Clearly a noob for this site no need to trash ppl.
Cat Mando
So being a noob gives him the right to trash the site? Ummmmmm….OK.
bravesiowafan
MLBTR gets caught up in the “hot topics” usually always one or two topics that get repeated over and over, don’t get your hopes up I’ve had two questions in 3+ years asking in every chat. Depending on the writer you may not ever have your team covered there is a real bias on this site to big market clubs
bravesiowafan
Seems every year this staff writes off 1/3 of the league and never hear a peep about these teams in chat during the season
Tim Dierkes
You’re suggesting that we focus our chats on unpopular questions?
bravesiowafan
I’m suggesting you expand your view of the league. We haven’t heard about teams like the Marlins dbacks Rockies reds basically what you guys consider the castaways. If you can’t admit you write teams off you can’t ever progress as a business plain and simple. There is plenty of stuff you guys could add without answering the same question multiple times every chat. There is a very clear bias to big market clubs if your in the second tier of teams or in the cellar this site doesn’t do those teams justice in terms of info in chats. Each team has info to offer yet we only see hot topics. There is more to baseball then hot topics.
bravesiowafan
Just as during spring training and first few weeks we have 6+ questions about kimbrel when the dude isn’t playing and we’ve heard zero true info regarding him you guys just continue to circulate the same stuff over and over. It kills me you (Tim) say you want your writers to be original on content yet nobody digs into the top minor league systems or even talk of rookies having break out years instead we get the same circles over the same teams and names over and over.
Tim Dierkes
Are you thinking MLBTR is composing the questions in the chats? People aren’t asking questions about the Marlins. The teams you see the most in the chats are a function of the questions the readership is asking the most.
bravesiowafan
Again if you can’t admit bias you can’t grow. Clearly you can’t be reasonable so I’ll just support the other chat hosts since it’s so difficult to understand the issue that your fans and baseball fans keep bringing up. When you write off 1/3 of the league you aren’t doing MLB coverage justice. At least Jeff Steve and mark admit they have slight bias hats off and respect to them.
petrie000
You’re missing his point entirely. This site exists purely off the amount of people who come to read it, which means talking about what the majority want to hear.
If you get a dozen people asking one question, and one asking another… It probably means most people want you to answer question A
If you don’t like the fact that 1/3 of the league is irrelevant by June, well that’s kind of a problem with MLB, not MLBTR..
refereemn77
This! Damn people are stupid. If you want to chat about your tanking team, go to one of the many sites that talks about your team. When the Twins were a dumpster fire after the All-Star break last year, I didn’t get mad that there wasn’t a lot of chatting about the Twins. Sheesh
Jeff Todd
As was already explained, we receive far too many questions to ensure that every chat participant gets one answered. We do our best to field interesting questions that can be tackled in this rapid-fire Q&A format.
Eta34
Poor baby. Such an injustice.
K3vin
What were your questions?
Eta34
Edog…most here are being polite. I’m not. You’re a whining idiot. You pay nothing to view this website. The ads are minimal. There are thousands of questions submitted each chat. A handful are answered. Your questions are probably boring, obscure, and poorly written.
Perhaps you can start your own website and answer the questions you deem important. You should contact the ACLU and rally for criminal charges against the writers of this site. Once you solve this tragic injustice, the world will be a better place.

WAH WAH WAH. Why can’t the expos have a team!!!!! Why don’t they wear cloth uniforms anymore!!!! WAH WAH WAH

Another Uber opinionated chat with Tim showing opinions over facts are what matter to Tim smh “kimbrel is bad”
Bruin1012
Kimbrel was poor in the playoffs last year. He had a slow start to the year last year when he didn’t go to Spring training due to his child being in intensive care. He just never seemed to get on track. That would make me Leary of signing him this late in the year. I think he needs ramp up time and no amount of simulation will change that.
The problem I have with Tim’s argument is that he peaked in 2010 to 2015. Kimbrel was never better then was in 2017 and he was also arguably the best reliever in baseball in 2017.
Tim Dierkes
The entire point of our chats is to give our opinions. If you’re not interested in those I’d recommend skipping the chats.
bravesiowafan
Your opinion clearly isn’t based on numbers. Even a closer with a 3.00 era is still an above average closer discounting someone off of no info when there is a clear track record is silly. Opinions by pros should be based off fact and logic not “he’s bad and will have to be rusty” yet as you stated in chat we’ve never had big name free agents to hold out this long. So if this hasn’t happened before you have nothing to off to prove k&k wont be in baseball shape
refereemn77
How do you think scouting works? It’s not all numbers you f— dolt.
Bruin1012
Tim’s opinion wasn’t that Kimbrel is a below average closer it’s that he would prefer Giles over Kimbrel. I don’t think Tim ever said that Kimbrel was a below average reliever.
Just like anyone else on this page it’s just opinions anyway. I happen to believe that whomever gets Kimbrel this year is not going to see the 2017 absolutely dominant Kimbrel who imo was the best reliever in baseball that year. He needs ramp up time and I think he showed that in 2018 when his almost nonexistent spring training followed him all year. He just never seemed to get comfortable. Maybe he will prove me wrong but until he does I don’t expect a lot from Kimbrel this year. If you sign him to a three year contract I’m thinking you will get a lot more out of him in years two and three.
Justin C.
Tim: “…the idea of Kimbrel being elite because his track record is elite is mostly based on 2010-15. Over the last three, I think we’ve seen enough to suggest he’s a 3.00 type guy (of course with the huge variance that can happen over any 30 inning stretch).”
Umm…what? Kimbrel’s numbers for the last 3 years:
2.44 ERA, 305 Ks, 75 BBs, 184 ERA+, 2.43 FIP, 0.906 WHIP
The only year of his career that was better than his 2017 year was 2012.
The idea that he is “bad” or that his entire reputation is based on 2010-2015 is just flat out wrong.
Even in his “bad” 2018, he had a sub-1.00 WHIP, a 2.74 ERA, a 3.13 FIP, and a 168 ERA+.
Nothing about his last 3 years suggests he’s a .”3.00 type guy” – whatever that means.
Tim Dierkes
His Steamer projection is 2.94.
m.mlb.com/glossary/projection-systems/steamer
They’re not just combining his last three seasons.
Justin C.
But you were, right?
Tim Dierkes
No. I looked up the Steamer projection during the chat, and it was the basis of my “3.00 ERA type guy” comment. If you have a better projection than they do, show us.
Justin C.
I don’t have my own projection system, so I’ll default to Steamer (which still shows him sub-3.00, btw). As a matter of fact, no projection systems that I can find have Kimbrel with an ERA at 3 or more.
It’s your chat and you can certainly do what you want with it, but nowhere did you say “Steamer projects him to be such-and-such.”
Your exact statement was “Over the last three, I think we’ve seen enough to suggest he’s a 3.00 type guy…”
It’s simple – his last 3 years do not suggest that, like, at all. You can prefer Giles to him, and that’s fine. I actually don’t think that’s a bad take. But to say Kimbrel is bad and to say that his reputation rests solely on his 2010-2015 – that’s ridiculous.
petrie000
You’re splitting hairs over 0.06 points of ERA? Rounding off isn’t allowed?
The lengths some people go to to defend their favorite players….
Justin C.
I’m not splitting hairs over anything, and the lengths I have gone to in order to “defend” Kimbrel (not my favorite player) has literally just been to post his stats from the arbitrary period previously used to say he has been “bad”.
petrie000
You take issue with him being called ‘3 ERA’ pitcher instead of a ‘2.94 ERA pitcher’… But sure, not splitting hairs…
Justin C.
No, I take issue with saying his last three years show us he’s a 3.00-type pitcher.
I’m not debating the Steamer projection. I’m debating the idea that the last three years from Kimbrel have shown us he’s a 3.00-type guy. It’s an awful take, based on what the numbers of the last 3 years actually show.
All Minnesota Sports
How dare MLBTR not answer my questions when I am paying so much money for this site!
SalaryCapMyth
So many complaints that are just unreasonable. You don’t like that your questions arent getting answered and you will give it ONE more chance than just go now. There are over a thousand people that are posting question but its YOURS that the host should notice.
Chat host answered questions about Braves, Orioles, White Sox, Blue Jays, Nationals as well as others. Of course CK & DK took up the majority of his time. That’s the most pertinent news for the contending teams.
Im also perplexed at all the hand ringing about Dierkes opinion on Giles vs Kimbrel. Kimbrel put out some warning signs that he may not be so elite anymore in additon to the set up time he will need and may still be rusty after that. Meanwhile Giles is going strong right now. Whether you prefer Giles or Kimbrel is ALL opinion and the only thing you can expect on Dierkes chat is Dierkes opinion.
