The Yankees announced that veteran infielder Troy Tulowitzki has left the team’s spring facility, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reports (Twitter link). He’ll take some time at home to “get over that (injury) hump and kind of push through the finish line of getting exactly right,” manager Aaron Boone explains.
It’s frankly hard to interpret this development. Boone had declared just days ago that Tulowitzki was “pretty much over” the lingering calf injury that originally sent him to the injured list. (Also via Hoch, on Twitter.) It’s unclear when the 34-year-old will be deemed ready for a rehab assignment.
Slated to fill in for a rehabbing Didi Gregorius, Tulowitzki made it through only five games to open the season before his latest health issue arose. He missed all of 2018 after heel surgery and only made it into 66 contests in the prior campaign.
What is clear is that Tulo will not make it back to the MLB roster before Gregorius, whose return to action appears to be imminent. Barring any intervening developments on the injury front, the return of Gregorius will put the shortstop position off limits except for fill-in opportunities.
Tulowitzki has been seeing time at third base in anticipation of just that scenario. There could still be a fit there, but there still isn’t much of an opening even in the absence of Miguel Andujar. The surprising Gio Urshela continues to turn in impressive results at the hot corner and the club will want to keep finding regular action for Gleyber Torres and DJ LeMahieu. Even rookie fill-in Thairo Estrada has hit like a mid-prime Tulo to this point.
Under the circumstances, there’s no real rush from the Yankees’ perspective. It’s not clear at all that the organization has a use for Tulowitzki in the majors. But the Yanks certainly appreciate the value of depth, having both compiled and deployed it quite often this season. Tulowitzki is presently occupying a 40-man spot. While he could be shifted onto the 60-day IL, roster pressures will ultimately force a final determination on his status once he is back to health.
Tulo is “working out” with Jacoby Ellsbury.
And Yoenis stops over on his horse.
And Carl Pavano!!
It would be a shock if he ever played another game with the Yankees. Maybe he’ll sign with the Rockies for the last few weeks like Matt Holliday did last year. Be a good way to finish up
Just leave the game,,,,go away for good
In other news, water is wet.
Water is not wet
Your favorite line…..and you never use it correctly.
It should be water makes you wet
Idk man, maybe water makes water wet, therefore water is then wet ….
retire
Sayonara sucker
He’s not really worth the roster spot. It was an inexpensive gamble by Cashman, but just didn’t work out. It’s a little sad to see players like Tulo and Pedroia and Ellsbury fall apart.
I had to watch VMART crumble and he was such a classy and good player. Now I am watching Cabrera crumble but he has a contract to 2024 at 35 million a year so a lot more heartache. Tigers should offer his 75% of his money as a buyout so he can walk away and still give them a discount. He is a first ballot HOF so I am sure he does not want to kill his legacy by just hanging on but he is not going to just retire with that huge pay day still to come.
Cabrera is still the best hitter on that team. Leads the team in RBI, batting average on base percentage. Who would you rather see? Mikie Matook?
Well said Melchez. Maybe Detroit can make Cabrera a player-coach; DH and Hitting Coach.
Unless he is deemed medically unable to play, I see no reason why he should accept a buyout. The same goes for Albert Pujols. Both of their HOF legacies are intact irregardless of what they do on the field moving forward. I agree it’s tough watching players being a shell of their former baseball dominances. You could probably count on one hand in the past few decades where players left money on the table and simply walked away.
I wouldn’t say they’re completely intact. I agree that nothing, barring a Pete rose type situation, could keep them out of the Hall.
However, every year Pujols plays and puts up terrible numbers tarnishes his legacy more. I for one will remember him as a terrifying force in STL but many fans, especially younger ones, will remember him as a sub replacement level player.
You cannot put Pedroia in that group. He loved the game not for the money…he ‘d play today if you said, ok 1 mil and a healthy body…he would be out there. He’s a throwback. Ellsbury is a scam artist who took advantage of his skills to scam the game…no love for anything but himself.
That’s a ridiculous thing to say
Moron
Butthurt because he signed with a nemesis team much?
Pretty definitive statements regarding two different people about whom you likely know nothing.
I predict he’ll ask for his release and sign a one day contract with Colorado so he can retire as a member of the Rockies.
I am not so sure about that. Remember he hated being a Rockies player and asked for a trade out of town. Even attended a Yankees game while injured to press the issue. Many Rockies fans for some reason forgive him for that, but I certainly don’t and I doubt that the owner does even if Tulo has changed his heart on the matter.
Such a shame to see such massive potential Mendel be realized
It is time for Tulo to ride off into the sunset. Taking time to go home to “get over the hump” basically means he is missing his family and wants to be there with them, and that is not a bad thing. Good luck to you Tulo and retire a Rocky!
Wow, who could have seen this coming? Pretty much every person that can spell “baseball”.
I DIDN’T! And I’m a huge bassbawl fan!
He is still trailing Cespedes and Ellsbury in the competition for the Carl Pavano Award.
Get over the injury hump? It’s been 10 years of that.
get over that (injury) hump and kind of push through the finish line of getting exactly right,” manager Aaron Boone explains.
Does Boone have a dictionary of vacuous statements to continually explain the veritable plethora of injurious events that have been occurring for his overly delicate players?
Tulo just hurt himself again reading this article, out 6-8 weeks
Your all wrong he will come back be released then Milwaukee will pick him up. Start playing first base. He will hit and they will rebound to go to WS beating the Yankees
Tulo is done. For a guy who’s rumored to have some insane work ethic to just essentially walk off? I wouldn’t want him back even if he did want to play. So this is either Tulo deciding on retirement or accepting a minor league assignment and the Yankees deciding to give him a day or two on it. Still, makes no sense to me.
Remember when all the yankee fans were making fun of the jays for getting rid of tulo? Now you understand why he was let go by the 2nd worst team in the league
At least the Yankees aren’t on the hook for the balance of Tulo’s contract.
Would he still get his money if he retires since he was released?
Of course he gets his money. The Blue Jays released him from his contract. He’s free to do whatever he wants…play, not play, etc. He gets paid.
“I’m a shortstop. If someone’s better than me, I’ll pack my bags and go home,” Tulo said last year, playing brinksmanship when talk had him moving to 3B. Now he’s “seeing time at third” for an org that has no use for him in the majors. Pride cometh before the fall.
What ever happened to Ellsbury? Did he hurt something g new???
Tulo will be healthy and back on the field as a regular contributor in NO time!!!
Wait… I think I meant “AT no time…”
Tolo will be that fat old ex baseball player with a serious limp because of all his injuries. That limp with then prob cause him to injure himself….
Isn’t it interesting with some players how they seem to have one injury after another AFTER there are signed to a very lucrative contract? As a Jays fan, I’m so glad to not have him around!
Another guy who never plays
Everything came full circle for tulo as he finally completed his epic journey to play for the team he always wanted to
Now cut him loose yanks
Yankees were idiots for signing him to begin with. What did they think was gonna happen?? I said the minute they signed he’ll be on the DL the first month of the season and low and behold he was and has been since.
its not like its costing the Yankees anything
Actually i spoke with TULOWITZKI on 06/23/2019 in henderson nevada… an he stated the following:
” The yankees and myself are soon going to part ways… because I recently told them I am NOT going to do anymore re-hab in Tampa, and they didn’t like hearing that at all. I’m really considering retirement, since there isn’t a team that has room for me anymore. My time in the majors is over ”
You heard it here first, and not from a beat reporter.
