Per Jim Callis of MLB.com, the Giants have agreed to terms with first-rounder Hunter Bishop on a $4.1MM, below-slot deal. The deal is over $500K south of the approximately $4.74MM slot value for the 10th overall selection.
Bishop, the brother of Mariners outfielder Braden Bishop, is an outfielder who attended the same high school (Serra, in San Mateo, CA) and college (Arizona State) as Giants legend Barry Bonds. The 6’5 lefty came late to baseball after devoting much of his pre-university energies to football, a sport he initially pledged to play at the University of Washington.
Bishop’s freshman and sophomore outputs were muted, but an offseason swing change unlocked a full range of theretofore unseen offensive talents, including top-scale bat speed and a plate discipline that endeared him to club executives across the league. Baseball America takes particular care to laud his “70-grade power” and “plus running ability” while noting that, though he’s possessing of the requisite tools to remain in center field, he may better suited for a corner. FanGraphs’ scouting report is notably bearish on Bishop’s current 30-grade arm, which the publication believes could be an issue in seasons to come.
Regardless, Bishop will hope to pair with other highly-touted offensive talents Joey Bart, Heliot Ramos, and the electric Marco Luciano to form the core of what the Giants hope will be the club’s next championship squad.
Bishop’s signing was just one in a slew of high-round inkings for the club today: as Callis notes, the Giants also agreed to terms with second-rounder Logan Wyatt (for $1MM; slot value: $1.47MM), fourth-rounder Tyler Fitzgerald (for full-slot $497.5K), and eighth-rounder Caleb Killian (for $400K, more than double the pick’s $176.3K slot value).

Wow. Really!!??

Jeez. Finally. That took way to long.

Giants could have 5 top 100 prospects by the season’s end. Bart, Ramos, Luciano, Bishop, and someone we pick up from the will smith trade
SFGiants74
I wouldn’t be surprised if Cannario hits that list. He is tearing up the AZL. Pamores might get an honorable mention.
sacball
Alexander Canario will probably crack that list too
Dixon Miaz
Canario most likely will not by the season’s end. If he can prove himself in Augusta, he’ll make it. Luciano will because scouts salivate over his ceiling.
SFGiants74
2021 is a bit more realistic for Canario to make it to Augusta. But then again, he is destroying Arizona.
Dixon Miaz
Nah, he should make it in 2020, if not this season. Ramos started in the AZL in 2017 and advanced to Augusta the following season. Canario is showing he’ll have a much better season in AZL than Ramos did in 2017.
SFGiants74
I flipped the levels. I put Augusta above San Jose.

I don’t think Canario nor Bishop crack the top 100. Bishop would have to really impress in his limited time in the minors in 2019 to crack the top 100. Canario is 19 and dominating Arizona. If he carries this over in the higher levels then yea. Luciano is almost a given and I think even if Bart and Ramos struggle the rest of the year they still stay on the top 100 at least till Mid Year 2020. We might get another top 100 for Smith or Bumgarner. I think we will be lucky for 4 top 100’s by the end of 2019, but 3 is more realistic. 5 would be awesome, but I think it’s pushing it.
SFGiants74
Bart is #20 and only at San Jose. Canario will easily been in San Jose next season. Bishop rates a 70 for raw power
BasesLoaded
Bart is 22 with College experience. Canario is 19 with no NCAA experience. He starts in Augusta next year with a possible quick promotion to San Jose if things go well. Ramos struggled in Augusta so it’s not a slam dunk.
SFGiants74
I flipped Augusta and San Jose’s level.
Dixon Miaz
Bishop will definitely crack the top 100. The top 10 rated in the draft almost always make the top 100. Bishop was ranked as 7. Bart was 6 last year. Alex Bohm is a top 50 prospect in the MLB, he was ranked 7.

You make valid point.

It is nice to be able to talk about guys like this in the Giants Farm System.

Something is starting to come together here. Makings of a valid system.

Really excited about the offensive parts coming together in the minors (hopefully it translates to the majors). However the Giants won with really strong starting pitching, and there are very few pitching prospects in the system right now that look like they may be #1 or even #2 type starters. One of the few pitchers in the minors that looked like he could be a top of rotation type (Logan Webb) was suspended earlier this season, hopefully he truly was unaware of what he took and keeps better track of what he takes.

“The Electric Marco Luciano”.
I’m going to file away that phrase in the recesses of my brain for when he breaks into the majors. Very exciting prospect.
