The Mets are optimistic the right hamstring strain that sent starter Noah Syndergaard to the 10-day injured list Sunday isn’t serious, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com relays. Syndergaard said Monday he’s in “tip-top” shape, while manager Mickey Callaway announced the right-hander’s dealing with a “low-grade” strain. Additionally, Callaway suggested righty Wilmer Font could take Syndergaard’s next turn in New York’s rotation. The 29-year-old Font has managed a 4.43 ERA/5.25 FIP with 5.31 K/9 and 3.98 BB/9 in 20 1/3 innings since the Mets acquired him from the Rays on May 6.
Here’s more from the East Coast…
- Blue Jays closer Ken Giles went to the IL on June 12 with right elbow inflammation, an ominous-sounding injury for a pitcher. However, the Blue Jays don’t expect him to stay on the IL past the 10-day mark, manager Charlie Montoyo said Monday (via Scott Mitchell of TSN). That’s especially good news for Toronto considering Giles could be one of the game’s top trade chips leading up to the July 31 deadline. The hard-throwing 28-year-old has upped his stock this season with a brilliant 1.08 ERA/1.18 FIP, 15.12 K/9 against 2.52 BB/9, and 11 saves on 12 chances across 25 innings.
- Injured Red Sox righty Nathan Eovaldi played catch for the first time since June 4 on Monday, but there’s still no timetable for his return, per Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. Eovaldi underwent right elbow surgery April 21. The hope then was that Eovaldi would only miss four to six weeks, but the bicep soreness he has dealt with this month has delayed a comeback.
- Major League Baseball announced Monday it has extended Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera’s administrative leave through July 1. This is the second time MLB has taken this action since it originally placed him on leave May 28, a day after Herrera was arrested on a simple assault charge relating to a domestic violence incident. MLB previously extended Herrera’s leave through today back on June 3.
- Marlins southpaw Caleb Smith could return from the IL as early as this weekend, Craig Mish of FNTSY Sports Radio tweets. Smith went to the IL with left hip inflammation June 7. He was a much-needed bright spot for the club before then, evidenced by a 3.41 ERA/4.21 FIP with 11.18 K/9 and 2.73 BB/9 over 66 frames.
As long as Nate comes back healthy who cares how long? The Redsox not going anywhere anyway. I just hope they don’t becomes sellers.
We’re in the mix for a wild card. That is firm ‘where’. Not nowhere lol
Still think you need 2 solid BP arms to be serious contenders and genuinely don’t know if the farm has the talent to get that with the number of other contenders that also need pitching. I can tell you as a non Sox fan I feel perfectly comfortable facing the Red Sox if they get to the pen by the 7th inning and are within 4 runs. Even the “high leverage” guys I have no doubt are hitable on any given day. And even if the current team gets you the wildcard, it’s still an issue if u have to burn sale and probably price out of the pen just to get out of that game and the other starters are fairly ordinary. Even a healthy Eovaldi is a 4-4.5 ERA guy. Despite his last year post season he’s simply not that good of a pitcher.
I guess you didn’t watch the playoff n WS last yr. Nate is a power arm when healthy. He went through this last yr too.
I did watch last playoff and WS. I’ve just also watched him play several seasons and my assessment of him as ordinary is based on a sample size of greater than 20 innings…
It amazes me how Red Sox talk about Eovaldi like he’s an ace because he pitched well as a reliever in the postseason last year. His career stats show very clearly that he’s a back of the rotation starter
Yes, but we also know that Nate was basically a .500 pitcher and nothin by a hard thrower through the regular season before he donned his Superman cape during the playoffs.
Who will emerge from the phone booth when eventually healthy…Super Nate, or Nate the hard thrower who has success every other game he pitches?
The farm has the pieces for two relievers. All farms do. It’s just that making that deal hurts the Red Sox extremely weak system far more than a team like the Rays who could cough up those kind of guys without blinking.
Eovaldi had a 3.33 ERA/2.88 FIP for the Red Sox in 11 starts before he “donned a superhero cape” last season. I don’t know what kind of pitcher Eo will come back as but let’s just present the facts. 4/5 of their rotation got lit up like a Christmas tree in their first handful of starts. I’m not going to throw Eo away and deem him a high 4 guy based on that either. (Also not going to bank on him as my rotation savior, that’s even more ludicrous) We’ll see what he is when he comes back.
Why is everyone giving up on the pennant. Too much season left to do that. Even if the Yankees get a starter, they still may burn their pen by October. Discount the wins against the O’s but all wins count the same. Yesterday was a nice win. 6 in a row. Let’s see what the standings look like at the all star break.
*meant AL East crown.
Because he had arm problems. Stats mean nothing when it comes down to pitching with heart, which he didn’t Shilling did. Without Nate they never would’ve won playoffs or WS, as did Price. Price pitched with heart, Petit did also with the NYY.
My Redsox have already burned their BP arms, facts are facts. And it hurts me to say that.
as long as the Indians languish as they have, the Red Sox are an easy bet for a wild card spot.
Enjoy playing catch, Nathan.
Sheesh, must be a frustrated Evil Empire fan still reeling over 2004
So many teams dodged a bullet on Nathan evoldi. Great post season run last year, but can he stay healthy?
Does anybody have an idea if whether or not that are gonna apply the DH to the NL next season or when are we looking? I know it’s just a matter of when til they do it. Maybe a 5 year trial run. Like a bandaid, hurry up and get it over with.
The DH isn’t slated for next year or any year at this time.
mlb.com/cut4/what-are-mlb-s-new-rule-changes
The rule starts out
5.11 Designated Hitter Rule
Any League may elect to use Rule 5.11(a), which shall be called
the Designated Hitter Rule.
Just like the AL had to vote it in, in 1973 the NL owners will most likely (as I understand it) have to vote it in as well. Much will depend on whether the listen to public opinion or not. Most NL fans would say No. Even the MLB player polled by the Athletic this past year said No NL DH by a slight margin (it was either 52% or 54%, I forget which)
Wish they’d remove it from the AL. Batting is part of the sport. Did the NBA allow a designated free throw shooter for Wilt or Shaq?
if they ever do it, itll be at leasta whole season before they add it into the NL. they wont ever do it on such short notice.
Nick Kingham can be the first dropped when Giles comes back. Has given up a bomb in each appearance for the Jays and somehow his ERA continues to drop despite giving up a run an inning in a Jays uniform.
Of course the Mets will rush Syndergaard back out of desperation
Noah and diaz for tucker and Whitley
Just get rid of the Mets Manager. “Wormer, he’s a dead man. Marmalard, dead. Neidermeyer and Callaway, dead ! “. Bring in Wally “Bluto” Backman !!!
Syndergard to Texas book it.
I cringed at the Eovaldi contract when it happened. BOS abused him down the stretch and into the playoffs, as they should have as a rental, and with his injury history it was a super risk inking him to a multi year deal. Could have snagged Kimbrel and Keuchel and re-evaluated the SP market next year. Especially with the window of controllable players they currently have. Let’s hope for the best.
Nate gave his arm up to help the team win, he was selfless, n deserved every penny he got, no real fan would complain about the deal. He earned and deserved every penny.
I can’t help thinking that if Noah Syndergaard went to a quality team… like say, the Red Sox or the Yankees, he would be better taken care of and healthier.
Just kidding.
