The Brewers have placed left-hander Gio Gonzalez on the 10-day injured list with a “dead arm,” according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. The placement is retroactive to May 29. Gonzalez’s roster spot went to catcher Manny Pina, whom the Brewers activated from the IL. Pina missed two weeks with a hamstring injury.
Brewers officials believe Gonzalez’s arm fatigue may be related to an unusual past few months, per McCalvy. The accomplished 33-year-old unexpectedly went without a job until signing a minor league deal with the Yankees on March 19, meaning he didn’t participate in a normal spring training. Gonzalez then logged three starts with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate before opting out of his contract and inking a major league pact with the Brewers for a guaranteed $2MM.
The Gonzalez signing has worked out so far for the Brewers, who have gotten six starts and 31 innings of 3.19 ERA/3.18 FIP ball from the former Athletic and National. Gonzalez, Brandon Woodruff, Zach Davies and Chase Anderson have been the only bright spots in a Milwaukee rotation that has gotten poor production from Jhoulys Chacin, Freddy Peralta, Corbin Burnes, Adrian Houser and Jacob Barnes in a combined 25 starts.
Given the struggles of the Chacin-Peralta-Burnes-Houser-Barnes group and 32-26 Milwaukee’s realistic shot at winning a second straight NL Central title, free-agent left-hander Dallas Keuchel stands out as an obvious fit for the club. Keuchel could sign as early as midnight ET on Sunday without costing his next employer draft pick compensation. The Brewers showed interest in Keuchel during the offseason, but it’s unclear if they’re still open to signing him.

Stearns, you HAVE to sign Keuchel. It’s obvious that the starting pitching is the only thing holding the Brewers from dominating. It’s a fallacy that the Brewers “don’t have the money”. They are swimming in it. Do the signing and finally have an ace.
SaltyRoxFan
Give it a break. Brewers have spent more money than most organizations. There are many orgs that can outspend them on Keuchel. That isn’t them being cheap.
ohmy
Actually they’re 16th out of 30. So, NO, they haven’t “spent more money than most”.
Their starting pitching staff salaries are in the bottom 10. That IS being cheap.
custardflan
The last month our starters have been outstanding and are responsible for our record right now. Kimbrel makes more sense than Kuechel.
2id
Team payroll is the highest it’s ever been in club history. Cheap was lowballing Paul Molitor and describing him as “just a DH”. Cheap isn’t overpaying for Keuchel.
brewsingblue82
I second what 2id says. That and they have spent more than ever before. That being said, if they truly want to go all in, sign whichever of Keuchel or Kimbrel they can cheaper of the two, then if needed, acquire someone at the deadline. But either way, they shouldn’t overspend, because they need some deadline room. Meaning if they can’t get either of those for less than 10 million (the amount they’d pay after prorating the contract), than don’t do it.

Keuchel is a good pitcher, but he is not an ace. He is a weak 2, more likely a 3. Helpful – yes. Ace – no.
ohmy
Hockey, I agree, but he would be the Brewer ace.

Plenty of outside options. Freddy Peralta, Corey Ray, and Mauricio Dubon, for Marcus Stroman?
Corey Ray for Madison Bumgarner.
One year rental of Keuchel sure, but not multi-year.
And yes, Jimmy Nelson will eclipse Jhoulys Chacin by the end of the month.
jrad2007
Gonna take more than Ray to get Mad Bum. Would have to throw a couple decent but not top 5 in the Brewers system in on the deal.

Ok the Brewers need to have Shaw/ Braun at first with trading or releasing of Aguilar, Thames, and Perez. Then go with Nottingham, Taylor and Dubon as bench. Go with a rotation of Woodruff, Nelson, Anderson, Davies and Gonzalez or Peralta. Then move on from Albers, Barnes, and Chacin. Send Claudio down and replace him with Hart So you a bullpen Hader,Hart, Guerra, Burnes, Williams, Houser and Jeffress

Closing the book on Aguilar kinda quick aren’t you?
stubby66
No not really he has been slumping badly since all star game of last year along with it continuing into winter ball. I like the guy and he has a lot of heart but ONE HOMERUN IN MAY from first base is unexcusable for guys making millions
colonel flagg
Why Perez? He gives them more flexibility than any other player they can bring up and he’s been productive. For the most part the position players you list are average. None of them can give the Brewers what Perez does.

Keuchel is an option but I’m not sure they need to do it since the Brewers have Jimmy Nelson chilling on ice in AAA.

This made me laugh out loud. You should try the Funny Bone Circuit.

I would bet that Jimmy Nelson gets more wins than Jhoulys Chacin from tomorrow through the end of the season.
twentyforty
People still believe Nelson will ever be a viable MLB pitcher again? Really? Do they realize what labral repair is?
MLB Top 100 Commenter
Nelson pitched great in two of his last three AAA starts. This is not your father’s sports medicine anymore. Sure, Nelson, like anyone, could have a season ending injury. But he also could be a viable 3 or 4 starter with an era around 4, not bad pitching in a hitter’s park half the time. Not sure Keuchel is much better since I have not seen Keuchel pitch in a year either.
the mike carter
Jimmy Nelson?
Bigfun
Yankees got lucky with that one
DarkSide830
if Keuchel is ready to go as his regimen suggests, he should be in Milwaukee

…tomorrow (accidentally sent the comment early)

I know its his arbitration year and all, and of course its all about the money but…
Why is Wilkerson not back up,
Hes been solid, reliable, and even hit a bomb so he is not really a liability at the plate, or as much as most pitchers are.
What else does he have left to prove, i remember the last call up, hopped a plane, landed in st louis i believe at 6, in the bullpen by 7, and on the mound at 8?? and threw 4 good innings and hit a homer, next game was solid until he got hit in the foot on a line drive right?
