The Blue Jays have moved right-hander Elvis Luciano to the 60-day injured list to make room for the activation of fellow righty David Phelps, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports.
Luciano went to the 10-day IL with a sprained elbow on June 12. His 60-day placement means he won’t be back until around mid-August at the earliest. However, as a Rule 5 pick, it’s unlikely to jeopardize Luciano’s place in the organization. Luciano has about two weeks left before he officially becomes Blue Jays property, notes Nicholson-Smith, who suggests that’s a formality.
The Blue Jays plucked Luciano from the Royals last December, and he made Toronto’s roster even though he won’t turn 20 until February 2020. The youngest player in the majors, Luciano has pitched to a 6.51 ERA/6.29 FIP with more unintentional walks (23) than strikeouts (22) in 27 2/3 innings. Luciano has also allowed 33 hits, including four home runs, but the rebuilding Blue Jays have ridden out his struggles thus far and appear likely to keep him around going forward.

Some doctor just got a lot of money to “diagnose” this injury.

I was thinking the same thing. Lol.

this is why players shouldnt be eligible for the rule 5 draft due to the contract void loophole.

Do these too young guys ever pan out? Seems like a bad move when there’s plenty of “veterans” in AAA who just need a chance…..

How did he only have two weeks left before he became the Bluejays property? Didn’t he have to be on their 25 for the whole year?
fmradioguy
They not only have to stay on the big league team for the whole season, but ALSO 90 days active (not on the DL). So the 60 day DL won’t hurt his chances of reaching the 90 day mark because he only has a couple of weeks left to hit it and should be back just in time to do so.

How was he eligible for the rule 5 so early
TLB2001
Some clause in his original contract with the DBacks, I’m guessing the risk of losing him was part of why we were able to get him at all for a rental of Jon Jay. Royals weren’t going to put a 19 y/o who hadn’t pitched in full season ball on the 40-man and were willing to take the gamble no one would be crazy enough to take him. Clearly that bet didn’t pay off, but I don’t think it is a gamble anyone in our front office is regretting.

Is it just me, or did Ed Rogers look really uncomfortable up on stage with the world class Raptors organization today? Does he even want a winning Blue Jays organization? Or is he content to let Shapkins destroy everything that AA built? AA’s playoff teams of 2015 and 2016 are a lifetime ago now, and AA is heading back to the show with Atlanta. The Jays are three years away from a winning record, much less the playoffs. #FireShapkins

“My diagnosis is that Luciano will have an sprained right elbow for at least 50 more days” – unamed Doctor. “He’d better be not pitching for that time.”
Unamed Doctor then returns to his normal job, bagging groceries at Metro Supermarket.

Longo’s didn’t allow the Doc to have a side gig and settled for Metro.

The Brewers did the same thing with Wei Chung Wan a couple years back. There was a loophole in the rules. Yes players are technically supposed to spend a year on 25 man roster which is really I believe is like 90 days because on September 1 is easy with roster expansion. So about this time teams will put said player in the IL until September 1. This then all becomes perfectly legal. Mostly the lower income teams take advantage of this rules. My biggest questions lately has been when is the players union going to file a grievance against teams manipulating control on players like Huira and Fraizer along with Paddock. This year seems like it has gotten worse

As stated before the season started, Luciano was going to be put on the 60-day DL, then return Aug/Sept to finish out the year. Jays will demote him to the minors next year to develop as a starter and we’ll probably see him sometime in 2021.
DarkSide830
it probably won’t happen because guys like Luciano probably apprecaite being added to a 40-man as early as possible, ans sitting on the DL in the Majors rather then in the minors. perhaps it messes up his developement, but it’s a shot he wasnt guarenteed to get otherwise.

opps, meant to respond to the comment above this one. my mistake.
