The Blue Jays have activated right-hander David Phelps, Scott Mitchell of TSN.com reports on Twitter. He’ll take the roster spot of fellow right-hander Justin Shafer.
Phelps is back in the majors following a lengthy rehab process after Tommy John surgery. He made four scoreless minor-league appearances, compiling four strikeouts without a walk, and was finally deemed ready to get back to the MLB mound for the first time since 2017.
If all goes well, the Toronto org could have another trade chip on its hands. Phelps inked a one-year, $2.5MM deal that includes a floating-value option. His earning power will depend quite a bit on how frequently he throws, as he can tap incentives and boost the option value based upon the number of appearances he makes this year.
At his best, Phelps was a quality relief arm, who ran up 142 1/3 innings of 2.72 ERA pitching from 2016 to 2017. That track record earned him this contract in spite of the TJ procedure, but his showing from this point forward will determine his trade value and future in the majors.

No comments really? Where’s all the excited Blue Jays fans?

Not really, just used to the tired PR crap coming from Shapiro and Atkins.

Didn’t we all enjoy Edwin Jackson pitching tonight. Contrary to what Buck and Pat said his previous outing was not stellar, he got the win only because the Jays scored 8 runs, while he only managed to give up too
I’m not suggesting the Jays would have won tonight but the jays lost 10-5 . Jackson fives up 7 runs in the 2nd.
Montoya was in a rush to pull Thornton when he was winning 11-0 in the 7th against the Astros but he sat there like a lump tonight while the Jays fielders are getting whiplash watching the ball fly out.

As said when the Jays signed him.Edwin Jackson is dumpster diving and not the answer.
I feel for the guy, Last year was okay for him and he has just fallen off the table. It appears that he is done as a starter.
He doesn’t deserve to be out there again. The Jays need to have some class and move him to mop up in the bullpen or release him.
Of course it was a $2M decision to sign him. The money is toast.
Atkins strikes again.

Demoting Shafer is why the Nick Kingham acquisition is/was a waste of time. Shafer wasn’t exactly lighting the world on-fire but because the Jays have to reward failures (Kingham), we can’t find out if Shafer is cut out for the major league bullpen. Anyone speaking positively over the Kingham pickup clearly did not see the bigger picture. Kingham is doing Kingham things so far in his short tenure with Toronto.
Edwin Jackson’s been awful. That says more about the AL West and pitching in Oakland more than anything.
As bad as the Buffalo starters have been they could have posted similar numbers to Edwin.

I sit there an wonder about this so called rebuild. First they bring in pitchers that for the most part other teams don’t want or don’t have room for in their systems. Then the Jays take young players and shuffle them around like a deck of cards.
Tellez will likely DH and play back up 1st base, but Drury is playing 3rd base when Gereurro is out and sometimes left field. Last night Biggio was playing left field and then center field two positions he has never played, whats next Galvis or Snolgard catching. And why do they keep trotting Jackson out there every 5 days, he is embarrassing not only himself but the team. He throws a 95mph fastball that comes in flat no movement and is screaming hit me.
Can Atkins and Shapiro be this stupid.

They showed stupidity when they didn’t recognize the 2017 Blue Jays were done competing. Couldn’t replace Edwin, Bautista was done, pitching staff didn’t perform as well as they did in 2016. It was time to cash out with Donaldson, Pillar, Smoak, Happ, Estrada….guys that had cachet and could bring something in-return to coincide with Vlad and Bichette’s rise from the minor leagues. Instead they waited and failed to capitalize on every player I mentioned. All this designed to slow down the process to allow Atkins to prolong his stay as GM of the Blue Jays. It got him an extension, so it worked out.
Imagine what the team would look like had they pulled the trigger on a trade with the Cards involving Donaldson. Pillar’s value was much higher 2 years ago, as was Estrada to start the 2017 season. Smoak should have been dealt that offseason to move Pearce to 1B. Happ was valued. Could have dangled Osuna, Tepera. All they traded was Joe Smith and Francisco Liriano. Uninspiring.
