The Athletics have selected the contract of right-hander Brian Schlitter from Triple-A Las Vegas, the team announced. He’ll take the 25-man spot of closer Blake Treinen, whom the A’s placed on the injured list Saturday, and give the club a full 40-man roster.
This will be Schlitter’s first time in the majors since 2015, when he threw 7 1/3 innings with the Cubs. Schlitter saw action with the Cubs in two other seasons (2010 and ’14), and combined for a 5.40 ERA/4.26 FIP with 5.27 K/9, 3.27 BB/9 and an excellent 56.5 percent groundball rate in 71 2/3 frames with the club. He hasn’t pitched in the majors for anyone else.
Now 33, Schlitter spent 2018 with the Dodgers’ Triple-A affiliate before he joined the A’s on a minor league deal in the offseason. Despite pitching the first couple months of this season in an environment that’s unkind to hurlers, he managed playable results over 34 2/3 innings before his call-up. Schlitter has posted a 3.89 ERA/4.54 FIP with 7.01 K/9, 1.3 BB/9 and a tremendous 67.9 percent grounder mark in Vegas.

He’s been really good his last 20 appearances, which is kind of hard to imagine when I wrote him off as an org filler.

Sure you want to do that, Billy?

It was him or Ryan Dull, who is carrying an ERA up over 7 and gave up 5 earned runs in his last outing.
arc89
Dull is just terrible now. Had a great rookie season an nothing since. The A’s need to let him go and maybe another organization can turn him around.
athleticsnchill
I agree, only because we need his 40 man slot for guys like Miguel Romero or Kyle Finnegan if they ever end up being useful. Romero has struck out 46 in 38 1/3 innings, but he needs to get his walks down. Finnegan also has great strikeout numbers and his walks have gotten better. We’ll see what he does with this opportunity in Triple A.
Dull throws a flat fastball that tops out at 92 and a slider and changeup that have both completely lost their depth.
Asfan0780
Dull hasnt been good since 2nd half of 2016. Overuse and injuries, surprising hes managed to keep a 40 man spot last couple seasons. Of cours hendricks was in same boat, got dfa’d last year, got back to majors and now is currently their best eliever and throwing 99mph
athleticsnchill
Maybe Dull just needs a random, out of nowhere surgery. That seems to be how we fix guys nowadays.

That will look kind of weird on the career stats for him when all is said and done. Playing in MLB in 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2019 and nothing in between. I wonder how many players have two different breaks of at least 3 seasons? I would say there were a few that served in both WWII and Korea like Ted Williams, but I doubt there are many, if any, since the 60s or so.
DarkSide830
that’s what i like about bbref. you can find fun tidbits like that. perhaps Satchel Paige or Minnie Minoso?
DarkSide830
Yeah, minoso did
hiflew
I forgot about Minoso, but when he did it he was really more of a publicity stunt than an actual player. He was a very good player for a time, but his goal of playing in 4, then 5 different decades kind of tainted him to me.
