The Angels have released reliever Cody Allen, per a club announcement. He had recently been designated for assignment.
This move brings a formal end to Allen’s disappointingly brief tenure in Los Angeles. When he inked a one-year, $8.5MM contract with the organization over the winter, there were visions of a return to his glory days as the Indians’ closer. Instead, Allen is out the door before the trade deadline.
The 30-year-old’s downfall on the mound has been surprising, but the Halos’ decision to cut bait really isn’t. Allen was shellacked in his 23 frames with the organization, allowing nine home runs and issuing twenty walks to go with his 29 strikeouts. His swinging-strike rate has plummeted as his fastball has lost velocity; opposing hitters are having little trouble spitting on pitches out of the zone and squaring up those that aren’t.
While the Angels may not have seen a way to get Allen back on track, it stands to reason that some other organization will make an effort to do so. He’ll likely end up on a minor-league deal, perhaps getting a chance to spend some time at extended spring training to sort things out. If Allen does return to the majors this year, he’ll assuredly do so at a league-minimum salary, with the Halos paying the balance of the money he’s guaranteed.
yaniwox
Red Sox should take a stab.
Jeff Zanghi
I agree. It can’t hurt… better than watching Smith go out there and get lit up every outing!
Indianfan
Yeah. Watching Allen go out and get lit up every outing would be much better.
mets2020
Time for the mets to make a sweet pick up. WATCH YANKEE FANS THIS IS HOW ITS DONE!
vtadave
You haven’t been banned yet? Congrats I guess.
mets2020
Banned for what?
DarkSide830
trolling. isnt it obvious?
mets2020
the mets are not a joke and i reported you

Mets2020: You were warned about abusing the reporting feature. Remember?
I’m just a reader/poster of this form like you. The authors don’t want to spend allot of time investigating the faux reporting of other members for non-transgressions of policy.
Oxford Karma
Yes, the Mets are doing a fantastic job on their pen! They have a set up man who can’t get anyone out, making 10 million this year. And two more years too! The way to be successful is to do the opposite of whatever the Mets do!
Phattey
Cody Allen bout to sign with the Mets for 9 million a year over 5 years
phenomenalajs
Very funny. He’d sign for league minimum and it would be a redemption project for both him and Mickey. Mickey was able to get the best out of him as his pitching coach in Cleveland. Mickey’s on his last legs in Flushing. Joe Girardi has eyes on the job. This may be Mickey’s last chance to prove what he can get out of his pitchers.
Polish Hammer
Or $1million a year for over 25 years…
david klein
Future Met or Nat but probably a Met
nymetsking
If they can time things right, maybe he’ll pass Callaway in the airport.
platglovelindor
Hahaha Callaway comment is too funny !!!!!
njbirdsfan
He’ll probably wind up on the Yankees and turn into Rivera knowing their luck.
Oxford Karma
When has that ever happened to the Yankees pen?
thecoffinnail
I like the idea of the Yankees picking him up. Perhaps someone in that loaded bullpen could help him figure things out. Maybe a couple of months of mopup duty will help. Relievers are so fickle but he was one of the best and just fell off a cliff. He is still relatively young and I hope he turns it around.
Yankeedynasty
The problem with that is he would never play in big situations, and he can’t pitch multiple innings of mop up/blowout work
OCTraveler
With their bullpen shortfall and since he is affordable, the Dodgers could use him at least at AAA.
geejohnny
Pretty much every team needs late inning relief help. I’m guessing that he’ll sign with a team lacking a true closer such as the Rays….but who knows?
vtadave
Alvarado >>>> Allen
geejohnny
And where is he? And when’s he coming back? When Alvarado is on…yes. When he’s on.
vtadave
About to put in a couple minor league appearances before returning.
HalosHeavenJJ
Angels “stretched the budget” to get him while falling just shy of landing Corbin, Robertson, Eovaldi, and well short of Grandal.
Would’ve been better to stretch the budget for actual talent.
And until Allen can consistently get strikes on a breaking ball, hitters will continue to look for and feast on his sub par fastball. He’s a one pitch pitcher right now, and that pitch isn’t exactly great.
macstruts
Thank goodness the Angels didn’t land Corbin, Robertson or Eovaldi. How long would they have that dead weight on the books?
Dodged those Bullets.
As for Grandal, I’m glad the Angels didn’t add a Known PED user.
CrewBrew
That happened in like 2012 lmao and hes one of the best catchers in baseball putting up monster numbers this first half sooo
macstruts
I get that, However I don’t want to root for a thief, and that’s what PED users are.
That was seven years ago and I certainly understand why seven years of being clean (hopefully) is penance enough.
But he stole wins that will never come back. What if those games he stole cost the Dodgers (I don’t like the Dodgers) the wild card. What he stole that can’t be replaced.
HalosHeavenJJ
Corbin’s 1.9 WAR this year would easily make him the Ace of the staff. I never wanted Eovaldi, either.
Grandal’s numbers have stabilized since his PED bust. He’s not what he was his rookie year, but he’s vastly better than anyone on the Angels roster or farm.
macstruts
So you’d be OK with Corbin’s contract?
kenleyfornia2
Eovaldi and Robertson are alreadly looking like bad deals. Corbin is looking meh but its early
Jeff Zanghi
Eovaldi has plenty of time to turn things around. He’s just hurt it’s not like he’s stopped throwing 100MPH or can’t find the plate or something. It’s a 4 year deal and he isn’t even 30 yet.
geejohnny
He was healthy one yr and scored a multi year with the Sox. Talk about great timing.
macstruts
Eovaldi is a two pitch pitcher. I couldn’t believe the Red Sox signed him to that deal.
throwinched10
The Red Sox should make Eovaldi their closer. The dude throws 100 mph and is a 2 pitch guy…100 mph fastball and dirty slider. That’s all you need!
macstruts
Yes they should. And if he’s a closer, they drastically overpaid, but as a closer, he wont have to go through a lineup on two pitches.
thecoffinnail
The Red Sox definitely overpaid him. His second half last year reminded me of when the Yankees picked up Brandon McCarthy a couple of years ago. His entire career was filled with injuries and mediocre pitching. The Yankees picked him up and he became an ace all of a sudden. When the year ended they passed on resigning him and quite a few fans were pretty upset about it. When he joined the Dodgers the next year he turned back into a pumpkin. Red Sox fans got to see Eovaldi quite often when he was a Yankee and they let a half season of a contract year change their opinion of him. He will never be more than an oft injured 3/4 pitcher. Who knows though. A move to the bullpen might keep the injuries away and he could become the next Chapman with his arsenal.
macstruts
It is early for Corbin, but if he was a free agent next year, would you want him for even 80% of what he’s getting paid now over the next 6 years?
I’d rather throw away the 8 million on Allen.
DarkSide830
chances are robertson’s injury will not linger in the long run. otherwise, there is no bad preformance to determine that he won’t be worth the money. also the phillies have money to kill. in my mind, that was the “stupid money” right there. regardless though, it would be a non-issue if he has to be cut any any point during the contract.
macstruts
I wanted Robertson, but he has a grade 1 flexor strain in his pitching elbow. This year is gone and the Phillies are at risk of paying him 13 million in 2019.
That’s a huge gamble. Allen cost the Angels 8.5 million. Robertson has a great chance of costing the Phillies 23 million.
And I don’t think either team threw away money. They just took gambles and lost. I think they were good gambles, but it doesn’t always work out.
I didn’t think Corbin or Evovaldi were good gambles.
thecoffinnail
I agree on Robertson. He has always been a solid late inning reliever while always avoiding the IL. He always put the team first and was a low risk gamble in my opinion. I was sad to see him go and was surprised when the Yankees signed Ottavino for pretty much the same money.
Oxford Karma
Those are bad examples of how the Angels should have spent money. Robertson and Eovaldi have hardly even pitched!
macstruts
Give me better ones. Please don’t say Morton. He wanted to pitch in Florida. Why? I will never know.
More often than not you are going to strikeout on the Free Agent market and if you are going to strikeout, let it be for one year.
I will always like reasonable one year gambles.
angelsfan4life
I was hoping that he would work out for the Angels. But it didn’t. Good luck to Allen finding a landing spot. That would return him, to his past success
macstruts
A one year commitment is a beautiful thing.
Not sure why anyone wants to be paying Corbin 110 million dollars from 2021 to 2024
DarkSide830
100% chance Corbin hits the DL with at least one significant injury over the term of the contract.
Polish Hammer
0% chance anyone hits the DL…
Yankeedynasty
Well played
graysondecker
The Pirates will probably sign him to use as an attempt to shore up the middle innings. His ERA over 6 is sadly still better than those of several Pirates’ relievers.
skeebwilcox
I’d at least give it a shot. But then again I thought a couple of recently released Middle Relievers would get at least a look see from the Bucs…
Melvin McMurf
1 down, 2 to go
bravesfan
If he’s ultimately gonna get a minor league contract, braves needs to be the first to get him and see what happens.
1090198
Bucs should sign to minor league deal- they need relief pitching
Don Zimmer Had Roid Rage
What? What a way to throw money away.
If I’m the GM, I tell Cody:
“Look, we are going to put you on the IL with a ‘calf strain’. Go home. Bang your wife. Then go to Salt Lake City in a few weeks and try to sort it out.”
cubfanforever
Yeah, that will get him right.
macstruts
The Angels threw money away on the three pitchers. But you can include LaStella, ( a salary dump by the Cubs) Lucroy, Smith, Robles, Bour, Goodwin, Ramirez, Robles,
The Angels have 13 Free Agents on their roster, six waiver pickups
You’re going to hit, your going to miss.
If you are going to miss, miss on one year free agents.
sufferforsnakes
Especially when your minor league system is in shambles.
macstruts
This again. The Angels minor league is not in shambles. It kept them at 500.
Why do you think it is… jealous?
bjsguess
Since when did Shambles = Top 10-15 best farm system?
macstruts
He’s a troll. Some people are just trolls. It happens.
sufferforsnakes
Not a troll. Look deeper into their system. Better yet, come join me at a game in San Bernardino, and see just how bad their High-A team is.
Current record? 26-43. The worst record in the California League.
sufferforsnakes
Jealous? I believe my Indians minor league teams are doing much better than the Angels.
HolaAmigo
Using win/loss especially in the minor leagues is such a terrible statistic to go by. Do you also use batting average to judge all hitters? If you’re going by win/loss then by your logic Mike Trout is just a mediocre player because his team is sitting 1 game below .500.
HolaAmigo
Multiple sites have the Halos listed from 12-15, And the ones like BleacherReport that have the Angels at 22–have the Indians at 25. Now that’s awkward.
I don’t think you know what “in shambles” really means. Let me give you an example:
Corey Kluber to the 60-day DL left Indians fans in shambles.
ron cey
it’s the smog
ron cey
that’s old old old news. We are doing much better now
macstruts
San Bernardino? Really? So you base your opinion on players in the California League?
That’s like looking at an elephant’s trunk and saying a snake and a snake are look alike. It’s myopic.
birdsfan415
Orioles should grab him

Welcome to Twins Territory, Cody!
All Minnesota Sports
Seriously! Give him a change of scenery chance.
prov356
But the Angels were a change of scenery.
Wahoo What a Finish!
Come on back to Cleveland. We are going to need a replacement after we deal Hand.
partyatnapolis
what i was thinking
Polish Hammer
Not gonna happen, he has too many friends there that know he is injured. Between his back hurting and the FB losing a couple mphs this isn’t a quick change of scenery that will find success.
CrewBrew
I could see the Crew picking him up see if they can catch lightning. Its crazy that this guy was once one of the best relievers in the game just a few seasons ago. Relievers are so risky to sign
shmeag
Mets better get on this we need any sort of bullpen reinforcement why not take a shot on a guy who Callaways familiar with
nentwigs
Can now compare investment strategies with Addison Reed who is also being paid for doing NOTHING. Maybe BOTH should try the Pirates organization who seem to get results from castoff pitchers.
oldleftylong
Ausmus doesn’t know how to manage pitchers, especially the pen.
Vizionaire
angel pen made up of mostly former rejects are doing quite well. and taking heavy load, too!
HartnellDown
Phillies. Pounce on this guy.
jorge78
“…..spitting on pitches out of the zone…..” now there’s quite an image!
BigFred
You know you’ve lost some velocity if the batters are spitting on your pitches as they go by.
debubba
Trevor Bauer was quoted that “he could fix his curveball in two seconds” but being of the old school of thought, he wouldn’t listen…
gv84
Tribe fan. He’s obviously not going to someone like the Red Sox or Yankees because as soon as he gets rocked for 2 innings he’s out. And they are not going to take the time for him to right the ship. These fans on the east coast kill me. I honestly see him going back to the Tribe and pitch in AAA or somewhere near home in Florida. Those are the only two things I see at this point.
solaris602
Tribe would definitely find his pro-rated league minimum salary attractive once he clears waivers. Might as well park him in Columbus in hopes that he figures things out in the next couple months or so.
Gwynning's Anal Lover
Cody would be good for the Pirates.
fathead
Braves and Rangers could use the help
rossman1970
He will be a Columbus Clipper by day’s end.

Mets or Red sox. They have to try anything
prov356
Glad to see the Angels not afraid to be decisive.
Cyclone37
Cards why not…..
Rich Hill’s Elbow
While I think it’s likely that he signs with another team right away, I really think I’d be in Allen’s best interest if he took the rest of 2019 season off to figure out where his mid nineties heater went and how he can get it back, because without it he might have call it quits soon.
dirkg
I like Epplers style of 1 year contracts that you can cut bait and move on. This is a perfect example. Unfortunately you have to overpay to get those one year deals (cough-Harvey-cough) but the added flexibility is def worth it.
ron cey
yeah. he can only try. pepper that is. Harvey is another bummer
sufferforsnakes
Man, some Angels fans are really sensitive to criticism. Baseball snowflakes.
macstruts
Criticism is fine, I just like honest and accurate takes. I haven’t found out that you supply that.
Thomas Bliss
White Sox wouldn’t be an unlikely option. They usually sign a veteran pitcher or 2 to put in AAA to keep from forces the young guys up.
ron cey
so disappointed
