The Angels have activated shortstop Andrelton Simmons from the 10-day injured list, with right-hander Jaime Barria heading down to Triple-A following last night’s game. (Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group was among those to report the news.)
Simmons will return to action a little over a month after suffering a Grade 3 ankle sprain back on May 21. It represents a remarkably quick recovery, all things considered, given that Grade 3 sprains are usually severe enough to merit absences in the range of 8-to-12 weeks. However, Simmons was able to begin a rehab assignment last week and, despite a very minor setback over the weekend, he’ll now be back in his usual spot quarterbacking the Angels’ infield.
As Fletcher noted in another tweet earlier today, the Angels now have Simmons, Justin Upton, Shohei Ohtani, and Andrew Heaney all active for the first time all season. Despite these injuries and some middling-at-best performances from the rotation and bullpen, Los Angeles has held its ground, entering today’s play with a 41-40 record. This puts them four games out of a wild card position, and 8.5 games behind the slumping Astros in the AL West race. The Halos can’t be counted out of the postseason hunt by any means, especially if they were to add an arm or two before the July 31 trade deadline.
Simmons had a .298/.323/.415 slash line over 195 plate appearances at the time of his injury, representing a 99 wRC+ and a dip below the slightly above-average offensive production he delivered in the previous two seasons. Perhaps more troubling is his lack of hard contract, as Simmons has only a .276 xwOBA (well below his already-modest .320 wOBA). His defense had also somewhat declined, if only in comparison to his usual all-world standards — Simmons has “only” a 14.4 UZR/150 and +4 Defensive Runs Saved over 379 innings at short this year, numbers that are still the envy of just about every other shortstop in the game.

No way halos make playoffs. They totally screwed their future up because with trout being the best player in the majors the angels can’t really sign anyone to a huge contract and that will go on for a decade
resinman
you don’t know Marino, he has plenty of money why do you think the only sign the two slugs for one-year contracts they have next year will be a different story he will spend money he always invest his money in the team.
ohyeah?
Nice to see a Twins fan coming out of the woodworks. Feels nice to win for once, doesn’t it?

Trouts salary is only a small jump from what he makes now (from about 34 to 36 mil). With a few good arms and one of the top prospects in all of baseball, future looks ok to me.
5toolMVP
Ur drunk twinsfan… Trouts salary is 36.8m in 2019 & 2020 then goes down to 35.4m/yr the rest of the extension.

Why is a twins fan commenting on an angels article, after 2019-22 pujols, cozart, Cahill, Harvey, Calhoun, Simmons come off the books we will have plenty of room to resign and acquire better players.

Mike Trout only got 25% of the All-Star vote. I say this because that tells me 75% of baseball fans don’t know a thing about baseball..
Even at 35 million a year, Mike Trout is a huge bargain. Even if he only means 8 wins a year, that’s a huge bargain.
But have fun rooting for your PED Twins. I couldn’t root for Polanco or Cruz. They are thiefs. They stole wins, and since they are worth millions of dollars, they committed grand larceny. Unfortunately these thieves pretty much got off scott free. If a police officer commits a felony, at least they take away his badge.
twinsfan368
Hey buddy, how could you not root for polanco and Cruz??? Polanco is the best and yes best hitter in the league and he has spoken multiple times to the media and the community about how bad he regretted his mistake.. shame on you
macstruts
What is it about being a thief do you not understand.? An owner pays millions of dollars for every win. Polanco stole Wins from teams, fans, pitchers and players. He’s thief.
If a banker embezzled, he could no longer work in the for a financial firm. If a cop committed a felony, he could no longer be a cop. If a lawyer perjured himself, he could no longer practice law.
And what do the Twins do? The extend him. Be proud. I feel very fortunate the team I root for hasn’t done that. I wouldn’t feel good about rooting for a thief.

I have Vegas bet in a mad casino. If Angels make playoffs then I lose kidney to the house. If Angels don’t make playoffs, then I get three dates with Cindy Crawford.
But anyway, I win because either I get dates or I get one kidney October Trout fun! A lot!
ocsportsgeek
Go home ejemp. You’re drunk. You’re going to need that kidney
bkbk
What are you talking about? At worst he represents 1/6th of the payroll and probably less.

If only playoff teams were actually built by just going out and signing expensive players. Being a Twins fan, you of all people should know that it takes a good youthful core from your farm system while supplementing from the open market. The Angels have the lineup they need, with a lot of club control, and now have better prospects to deal for useful arms without crippling their future. I’d say they’re one of the more dangerous teams to look out for this season.
Omarj
So you jumped on an Angels’ post only to be negative about keeping Mike Trout. Didn’t your team do everything to keep Morneau and Mauer. This Angels team could sneak into the playoffs. Their offense is versatile and their pitching can turn it around. If they’re a few games out this bad with SP, they fix that, they’re in.
HaloShane
Nice, solid 3rd place team.
Ejemp2006
Having so many surprises that Angels didn’t buy a Keuchel and Kimbrel. Then make for trade with Tiger for Greene.
Go for the gusto every year and give us October Trout.
Rich owner is old and wants title. What is done with money after dead? Give it to stupid kids?
No! No! No! Spend it on predeath championship parade legacy! Let kids inherit a parade memory.
So many sellers. Angels can still get good pitchers in supply rich trade market. Maybe give up great double or single A kid, who odds are, won’t make it anyway.
Stroman? Sure. Boyd? Sure. The future is now.
jorge78
According to previous MLBTR posts, it is not a market full of supply rich arms…..
macstruts
I’ve asked this before and you’ve never answered me. Who is the second place team?
Ejemp2006
Separation between top teams and bottom teams is so great now. Who is second is any one guessing. It could even be Seattle.
But at top, no one guessing. Astros. Central is so bad that Central second place has super weak schedule make for easier Wild Card. Boston, NY, and Tampa all have real chance for wild Card. West gets Astro in playoff and West second team gets no October time.
macstruts
Boston is going to be hard to catch and the Rays have a pretty large lead.
If it was only Cleveland, Rangers and A’s, I’d feel pretty good about the Angels chances. I feel pretty good about the Angels chances finishing second in the AL West. Their chances of making the wild card are slim. But Simmons is a huge help.
Lucky-Arm28
Trade him for prospects.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Certainly not out of the question that Anaheim could make the playoffs, but they’ll need everything to go right. Their pitchers need to improve, players need to stay healthy, and they’ll need three out of four of these teams to go South: Boston, Tampa, Cleveland, Texas. So it is quite the long shot but stranger things have happened!
Psychguy
Would be nice to get an impact arm, but they don’t have the organizational depth. They don’t have many middling prospect to entice a difference maker. Halos are still 1-2 years away from legitimacy. Sorry, Cahill and Harvey were bad moves and cost them.
braveshomer
Love the pic! Simba is being set free!!!(insert Angels voices singing in harmony)
yamsi1912
Angels will make a move for starting pitching after this season. Wouldn’t mind seeing them trade for Stroman at the deadline. Gerrit Cole is a local kid who went to high school a few miles from Angel Stadium. He would be a nice fit, plus Ohtani pitching next season as well.
SoCalAngelsFan75
I’m keeping hope alive they make the playoffs but the realist in me sees that brutal last 5 weeks of their schedule and, as much as they’ve improved recently, I can’t see them pulling off enough wins towards the end to sneak in.
johndietz
The Angels will be fine. Everyone’s getting healthy, the young pitchers will do fine. They’ll be in the playoffs this year. Everyone can relax
Greg_winner
Canning looks like a legit 1st round prospect coming into his own. Skaggs has pitched better as of late and although I am n9t a Cahill fan he’s a team first guy and did show he can be solid in middle long relief appearances. Next yr there will be plenty of big arm FA’s and Cahill and Harvey will not be on the payroll. They can still be buyers this year, as long as it doesn’t cost them a ton of prospects, most notably Adell. I believe the Halo’s have Adell off limits….hopefully.

Glad to hear Simmons is back and ready to vacuum up anything close to or far away from him. The dude is a beast at shortstop. He and Trout deserve to be on a Halos team truly built to win. NEED Starting pitching and also bullpen help.
