A pair of highly talented Athletics lefties returned to competitive action yesterday after long layoffs. Prospects A.J. Puk and Jesus Luzardo each began injury rehab assignments last night, appearing for the High-A Stockton Ports.
That news is quite promising on its own. Better still for the A’s, the southpaw duo looked to be in fine form. As Tyler Maun of MiLB.com writes, both hurlers impressed in 33-pitch piggyback appearances.
Puk came out blazing in his first competitive work since the 2017 season, working in the upper nineties with his acclaimed heater. He ultimately ran up four strikeouts in two frames while permitting one run on one hit — a home run from highly regarded Giants prospect Heliot Ramos.
It’s excellent to see that Puk has regained his arm speed since undergoing Tommy John surgery. He underwent the procedure in April of 2011, temporarily halting what was likely to be a quick run through the Oakland farm system. Puk, who went sixth overall in the 2016 draft, had been expected to make his way to the majors early in the 2018 campaign after an impressive showing in MLB camp that year.
The story isn’t altogether different for Luzardo, who featured in a similar role in the spring of 2019. He also had hopes of a swift rise to the majors dashed by injury. In his case, shoulder troubles caused the team to order a shutdown late in camp. The organization understandably set a cautious course for the 21-year-old hurler.
Last night, Luzardo spun three scoreless frames. He struck out two, with Ramos among the victims, while logging 24 strikes in his 33 pitches. That’s efficient work from the precocious hurler, who is known most for his exceptional feel and command over his three-pitch arsenal.
Where things go from here will depend upon quite a few factors, including the way that Puk and Luzardo recover from their first big tests. There’s little question that they’ll be tasked with multiple additional rehab starts while they build up their pitch counts and the club evaluates their readiness. But it’s hard not to dream on successive MLB debuts as soon as early July.
“I just know that they’re going to be throwing pretty consistently now until the end of the year,” Stockton pitching coach Chris Smith says. “The gloves are off. They want to see those kids hit the ground running.”
That’s an encouraging takeaway for A’s fans. These exciting young pitchers still have hurdles to clear before reaching the majors, but that goal is now clearly in sight. Adding them to a generally subpar rotation mix would completely change the complexion of the Oakland pitching staff. Whether that’ll occur remains to be seen, but the A’s ought to have a good sense before the trade deadline.

2017 not 2011.

Puk was already hitting 99 in the first inning….the end of this summer is going to be very interesting…

Really interested to see where Manaea’s velocity is at. Haven’t heard much about that since he’s so early on in his rehab. He was sitting 93-96 and could touch 97 before his shoulder started affecting him.
Now he’s got that sharper slider and improved change up. Add another 2mph of separation and he could come back as a very, very good pitcher.

I’m guessing with Manaea’s situation, I don’t think we’ll see much velocity spike at first, it’s going to be gradual

Puk = Hader 2.0?

a good example why the A’s should make any big trades this year. wait for them to be ready a full year next year. Astros are tough but next year they will need to drop payroll.
sacball
*shouldn’t
arc89
yes shouldn’t my mistake
Strike Four
Your mistake was thinking all the A’s issues can be solved by untested prospects. They absolutely should make moves -they have roster crunches everywhere anyway, they kind of have to in places.

@Strike your definitely right! They have some crunches and gotta make some moves! These young guys need some veteran help with a couple of these pitchers being ready in a month or so 2nd half can be looking dam good!

I don’t really understand why anyone thinks the A’s will make a high profile trade this year. Our rotation isn’t stable and our bullpen is underperforming right now, and worse is they aren’t independent of each other. We also have question marks in right, left and second for the foreseeable future.
I could see them moving Piscotty, Profar and Grossman if they think guys like Bolt, Mateo and Martini could come up and make an impact. All are impact bats in the minors right now, and could give a shot in the arm to a team that is almost too patient at the plate.
sacball
I can see them moving one of Mateo or Barreto and probably Fowler
athleticsnchill
Maybe. That depends on how extension talks with Semien go throughout the year. He’s only got a year left before he’s a free agent, so they have to feel confident they can sign him to an extension.
Strike Four
Couldn’t agree more. Groundball King Marcus Stroman is a potential key to Oakland making the postseason, and the A’s have a stack of mid-tier prospects it would take to get him. Imagine Stroman with Chapman, Semien and Olson behind him? ERA: 1.00 (FIP: 4.00 lol).
Stroman-Montas-Luzardo-Bassit-Fiers with Brett Anderson as a longman to come in after Luzardo, who’s probably on a pitch/inning limit. BA can also be around for injuries.
Oakland also needs RP, but Puk is looking like Hader 2.0 already so:
Treinen-Trivino-Puk-Soria-Petit-Hendriks-Buchter with Wang also maybe sticking around.
That’s the staff I want the A’s to have for the stretch run, they’re taking out the WC if they can make that happen, straight up.
athleticsnchill
Yeah the A’s aren’t trading for Stroman. He’s a headcase, and he debunks the entire second half of your post because he’d cost us one of Luzardo or Puk, or potentially Murphy who should also be considered off limits.
The Blue Jays aren’t going to trade back for broken Barreto or Mateo because their middle infield is pretty set. The only guy otherwise they could potentially want from Triple A is Fowler.
Strike Four
You honestly think 1.5 years of Stroman brings back Luzardo, Puk and Murphy??? LMAO!!! No dude, just, no. Mateo and Fowler could easily headline with a couple other lower ceiling players. Stroman isn’t bringing in multiple top 100 guys, not even close.
He’s not a head case, he’s a grounder machine, he literally leads the league in grounder rate. Jays terrible defensive INF would drive anyone mad. He’s a spectacular get for Oakland with that almost-all gold glove INF, altho Profar’s gotta go at 2B, Barreto knows how to throw like an adult at least.
Barreto’s been fixed for a while BTW, update your files. A’s need to replace Profar with Barreto ASAP.
athleticsnchill
> He’s not a head case, he’s a grounder machine,
They’re independent of each other. He’s a head case, and a ground ball pitcher. One of those in Oakland’s case supersedes the other. The A’s don’t like trading for or signing guys that have attitude problems, and Stroman has an attitude problem. He’s all about him, and that doesn’t work in Oakland.
> Barreto’s been fixed for a while BTW
He’s been fixed for 7 games. He’s gotta do that for a month before anyone sees him as the trade candidate he would have been over the last couple of years.
Strike Four
Also the phrase “being a head case” is a slur now. Please lets end it today. Do you have doctors reports, stating that? No. So it’s based on personal conjecture, which is terrible. Please link to his reported “attitude” problems, I’ve never heard this.
Stroman’s perfect for the A’s and they have the prospect overstock to get him. They don’t even have to give up anyone big. I’m not sure any other team who wants him will give up any top 100 prospects, and the A’s have the best top 100-200 options, Mateo, Fowler and one more gets Stroman, who will certainly line up perfectly with the A’s respected defense.
Barreto has a season OPS of .950 vs lefties, he’s mlb-valuable today.

Can Puk make the majors this season?
Strike Four
Oakland has said many times they are going to bring him to MLB as a RP, most likely after the all-star break, but if he’s throwing 99 already, could be before.
Hader 2.0 comin soon!
