The White Sox have selected right-handed reliever Juan Minaya from Triple-A Charlotte and transferred outfielder Jon Jay to the 60-day injured list, James Fegan of The Athletic tweets.
Minaya has returned to Chicago’s 40-man roster less than two months after the team outrighted him to the minors. The 28-year-old has struggled to a 5.51 ERA/5.99 FIP in 16 1/3 innings in Charlotte since then, but that didn’t stop the White Sox from bringing him back to their unspectacular bullpen. White Sox relievers rank toward the bottom of the majors in strikeouts, whereas Minaya specializes in fanning opposing hitters. Minaya has struck out 12.67 hitters per nine in the minors this year, and he put up 10.28 K/9 (against 4.83 BB/9) with the White Sox from 2016-18. He also pitched to a passable 3.93 ERA/4.04 FIP during that 100 2/3-inning span.
Jay, meanwhile, still hasn’t suited up for the Sox since they signed the contact-hitting veteran to a a one-year, $4MM guarantee over the winter. The 34-year-old went on the 10-day IL on March 26 with a hip issue, and his move to the 60-day version means he won’t come back until at least late May. There’s no timetable for his return, though, per MLB.com’s Scott Merkin, who reports Jay is headed to extended spring training to rehab.

what’s the issue with this move?
nick o
They bring back players they outright they don’t know what they’re doing
mikevm3
They bring them back because they are performing well in the minors and have earned another call-up.

Did you even read into the second paragraph? 5.50 era in AAA. If you’ve ever watched minaya pitch, you’d understand why fans arent happy he is back.

@Nick o
Who would you bring up? And don’t say Burdi. Guys like Fulmer, Ruiz, Frare, and Vieira have done so well, haven’t they? Not every team is capable of having the Yankees bullpen.
My guess is the Sox needed some fresh arms for the bullpen during this stretch before their next day off May 15. It doesn’t really matter which turd gets brought up, does it? Until guys like Burdi, Hamilton, Tyler Johnson, etc are ready, they might as well interchange the turds to keep the bullpen fresh.
And I am aware I am saying this AFTER Minaya served up a grand slam to the first batter he faced.
eric9690
Vieira pitched well last time out, there was no reason to send him down. I would honestly rather watch fulmer pitch than minaya. Him coming up made absolutely zero sense, especially with Ryan burr coming off the IL tomorrow

Minaya definitely wouldn’t have been my first choice. In fact, I’m surprised he’s still even in the Sox system. But at this point, I think the only reason he’s up is a warm body to eat up a few innings to save some of the arms. It doesn’t seem like any of the pitchers can make it past 5 innings, which is killing the pen.
The Sox aren’t even close to contention right now, so it’s not a big deal if some scrub from the pen pitches awful. Once Hahn feels this team is a contender, he better be prepared to vastly improve the pen. The pen will make or break this team in the first few years of their window of opportunity.
I agree about Vieira, I would’ve just kept him up, but maybe they’re saving him for later this year. I’m not real high on him either, but at least there’s a glimmer of hope he will be more than just a warm body attempting to eat a few innings.

Last nights debacle is what happens when you do not invest in decent free agents. Reinsdorf / FO cannot continue to shop for bargain basement talent and expect major league results.
Minaya hasa an era of 5.5 in AAA. This screams boneheaded cheapskate mistske….
eric9690
I know it’s so far only two games against the defending champs this weekend, but it feels so demeaning watching this team. And then the dagger that rodon will more than likely be out for the season, kopech is out until 2020, cease’s debut is TBD, Jimenez still on the shelf. And instead of digging into the farm and promoting some arms that have never seen the MLB, they continue to call on the retreads.
Tough to be a fan right now.
cysoxsale
that’s because they dont WANT results because that would cost money. that clown makes billions/yr and will for decades more because as a cockroach he’ll last through anything.
Dogbone
Reinsdorf has got free tax dollars from taxpayers in AZ, FLA, and ILL – and he still will not spend money to help the team get better.
He only shops at bargain prices.

I don’t think injuries to players are funny, nor am I ever glad that a player is injured.
With that said, this front office is getting exactly what it deserves from Alonso and Jay following the off-season charade to fleece fans into the belief they were serious about machado. The whole deal reeked of Kenny Williams anyways.
Luckily Tim Anderson has made all forget about machado, but until this team is ready to actually spend the money and start to deal off prospects for real talent, all we can hope for is .500 baseball.
Also don Cooper sucks. 19 years as a pitching coach for the white Sox, and they haven’t been in the top 10 in team era since 2009. That was including sale, quintana, years. All these reclamation projects and not a single success story.
pullhitter445
Not only are the consistent amount of injuries to the guys who are supposed to be big parts of the white Sox attempt at a rebuild demoralizing. I’m still not over trading Fernando tatis jr as the player to be named in the James shields deal. Putting aside the machado reminder that this organization will not execute acquiring free agents outside of the organization that would have positive impacts on the team. This sadly is how jerry owner teams operate. The only way out is to see jerry go and hope the white Sox get an owner who wants to win. Until then I don’t have any faith in the white Sox.
Nick Stevens
Willie Jay on the IL is the best thing for the White Sox. Play the prospects and see if they can actually play. Don’t need a 34 year old stiff taking at bats away from them.
chicagofan1978
Another frustrating season is inevitable. Man I really had hopes like I have had every year since 2005. I’ll still watch my team and support them but at some point they have to get rid of Cooper and maybe try to win. I know the problems aren’t solely on him, but there is talent there and someone needs to try to bring it out of them.
Dogbone
Yes, Cooper IS PART of the problem. But the main problem is the ownership of Uncle Jerry Reinsdork. Reinsdorf is by far the cheapest owner in sports.

First batter Minaya faces…wait for it…GRAND SLAM! That couldn’t have been planned any better. Apparently saying the bullpen is a mess is a gross understatement.
