The Tigers announced that they’ve returned right-hander Reed Garrett, their pick in last December’s Rule 5 Draft, to the Rangers. Detroit designated Garrett for assignment last week, and he went unclaimed on outright waivers (as was first reported, on Twitter, by Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press).
Garrett, 26, piqued the Tigers’ interest with a combined 2.04 ERA, 8.9 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 61 2/3 innings of work for the Rangers’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates last season, but it’s been difficult for the club to trust him so far in his big league debut. He’s tallied just 15 1/3 innings, and during that time he’s issued 13 walks, hit a batter and recorded 10 strikeouts. Garrett has also served up 25 hits, three of which have been home runs.
Even for a rebuilding club like the Tigers, carrying a reliever who’s had such pronounced difficulty throwing strikes would be difficult over the course of a full season — particularly when there are other young arms in the organization to evaluate in that spot. The inability to option Garrett to the minors also limits the day-to-day roster flexibility for general manager Al Avila and his staff, which is particularly troublesome given the large number of injuries the Tigers have experienced in the rotation — all of which combine to put further pressure on the bullpen to soak up innings.
The Rangers, who themselves are in need of all the young pitching they can get, will surely be pleased to welcome Garrett and his 95.7 mph fastball back to the organization. He won’t take up a spot on the 40-man roster unless the club decides to select his contract and promote him to the Majors later this season.

He will fit right in with the Nashville sound
Phil Haverdink
Actually he is the opposite of the Nashville staff…they walk almost the least as a team and are one of the lowest SO staffs….so he will cause an uptick in both department.
But their Batting average against is almost the worst!?!

Good thing Detroit had the first pick in the rule 5 draft. I think the Tigers should just start scouting other teams scouts, like borrowing your friends homework in school

The Tigers picked 5th not first and all the teams that picked before them, except Baltimore, have sent their picks back. The Orioles apparently have room for an SS hitting .150.

That’s right. Victor Reyes was the first overall pick the previous year. My bad.

I had to add a comment as well because they did have the first pick in Rule 5 draft, the year before. They had the 5th pick in a year where there was a SS prospect that would have been the better pick if they had the first pick. They have hit on a few Rule 5 picks in the past but most do not make it. Tigers no doubt will be picking high again next year #6 & the year after as well based on where they are heading this year. Bring on the real draft!

I don’t see what the Tigers saw in Reed Garrett’s MiLB numbers to acquire him in the Rule 5 draft.. I understand what they saw in Victor Reyes the year before but Garrett was not anything noticeable.

“Garrett, 26, piqued the Tigers’ interest with a combined 2.04 ERA, 8.9 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 61 2/3 innings of work for the Rangers’ Double-A and Triple-A affiliates last season”. and he threw 96/97. He looked like he had resolved his control issues. Unfortunately he had not.

Throws 95+ but a ton guys do and can’t control it. He’s a Buck Farmer & just doesn’t know it yet. 4A guys throw 95!

“Juuuuuust a bit outside,” in Uecker’s voice is all I could think reading that Garrett MLB stat line.

I’m not sure I get it. At this point, counting September, you only have a couple weeks before you hit 90 active days and get rights. Surely they could plan it around a few DL trips with ERA inflammation? Seems a waste at this point.

Not every team plays as loosely with the rules as you might like them to.

Of you’re not cheating you’re not trying

For a team deep in pitching prospects, I didn’t understand picking a right handed reliever that has trouble throwing strikes. Were they going to teach him to throw it over the plate?
A Padre rule 5 guy I was interested in… Vosler a 1B/3B with some power and OBP.
A guy doing well this year… Yankees Gosuke Katoh… 2B/3B .300/ .384/ .586 AA/AAA
Wouldn’t cost much, but it would definitely be better than what we have.
Time to strike a deal with the Rays… Cronenworth and Kean Wong for Goodrum and Hicks and maybe a reliever.

It would probably take more than that, but the bigger issue would be Avila himself. He’s not going to make that trade because of Candy; Lugo; WCastro and Paredes. He’s still drinking his own Kool-Aid. I do love the thought of acquiring those two. IMHO, they really need to get a few outfielders.
