Padres rookie righty Chris Paddack has been brilliant across his first six starts and 33 innings in the majors. But Paddack’s already just 57 frames away from the career-high 90 he totaled in the minors last season in his return from 2017 Tommy John surgery. Considering Paddack’s long-term importance to the organization, San Diego has plans to limit his workload, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Indeed, agent Scott Boras told Jon Morosi of MLB.com that the Padres will “manage” his 23-year-old client’s innings. However, Cassavell notes that doesn’t mean the Padres will shut down Paddack – something the Nationals did with Boras client Stephen Strasburg amid a pennant race in his younger days. “It’s mapped out,” manager Andy Green said of the Padres’ plans for Paddack, though he added that “it’s mapped out with the intention for adjustments, as well. So to sit here and walk through exactly what we think is going to happen would be foolish.” Meanwhile, Paddack indicated he’s on board with the Padres’ approach and revealed he’s aiming for a 130- to 150-inning season.
More from around the game…
- Athletics closer Blake Treinen is dealing with right elbow discomfort that he believes is tendinitis, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Treinen’s unlikely to pitch Sunday as a result, per Slusser, who writes that “he’ll get checked out” on Monday. Treinen hasn’t toed the rubber since April 28, when he took a loss in Toronto after the Blue Jays lit him up for four earned runs on five hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old’s 2019 ERA skyrocketed from 0.68 to 3.00 during that uncharacteristically disastrous performance. Treinen told Slusser he’s simply fighting “fluke soreness,” but if the issue forces him to the injured list, Slusser points out it would be his first IL stint in the majors.
- Pirates righty Chris Archer is eligible to come off the IL on Monday, but that won’t happen, according to Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic. Archer – out since April 27 with right thumb inflammation – is in line for a bullpen session Tuesday, and he’ll need to throw at least one sim game before the Pirates decide whether he’s ready to return. Archer’s absence is all the more troublesome for Pittsburgh now that fellow righty Jameson Taillon could miss upward of a month with a flexor strain in his elbow.
- Already out since April 3 because of a left calf strain, Yankees shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has suffered a setback and will be shut down for another week, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com tweets. It’s the latest bad break for the once-great Tulowitzki, whom injuries have haunted throughout his career. The 34-year-old wasn’t healthy enough to participate in either of the previous two seasons, which led the Blue Jays to cut him over the winter and eat the remaining $38MM on his contract. Tulowitzki then found a taker in the Yankees on a league-minimum deal, with both parties hoping he’d stay healthy and adeptly fill in for the injured Didi Gregorius. The dice roll hasn’t paid off for the Yankees, who have received a meager 13 plate appearances from Tulowitzki and appear unlikely to get him back anytime soon.
- Although Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has exclusively been an infielder since debuting with the Blue Jays last year, that’s about to change. Speaking with Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com and other reporters Saturday, general manager Ross Atkins said the Jays plan to turn Gurriel into at least a part-time outfielder. The 25-year-old, whom Toronto demoted to Triple-A Buffalo three weeks ago, has been racking up corner outfield reps in the minors. As Chisholm writes, the outfield isn’t totally new for Gurriel, who played left in his native Cuba for 40 games back in 2015-16. The change figures to open up major league playing time for Gurriel upon his return, given that Randal Grichuk’s the sole Toronto outfielder who has been remotely productive this season. The group entered Saturday as the American League’s least valuable outfield.

Too bad about Tulowitzki, but he’s not an Ellsbury.

Tell that to the blue jays.

Tulo is an egotistical jerk,,,,put him out to pasture,,,,,he’s become an embarrassment to the game
Steven Chinwood
“Tulo is an egotistical jerk” What proof do you have to make this claim? Just because you hate someone doesn’t mean ..”he’s become an embarrassment to the game”
flippinbats79
His agent begged the Jays to release him as Tulo didn’t want to be part of a rebuild. Then he chooses to sign with a direct division rival. He hits a homer against them in spring and hot dogs it around the bases, screaming and fist pumping. Then he goes off on them in the media after the game. He needs a lesson in self-awareness. Total jerk.
PopeMarley
Hang the SOB!
andremets
He also refused to play another position.
Ruccuser
He also said he would not play anything besides shortstop in his final days with the Jay’s then said he would play other positions once released. He also never appears to do any extra work to keep or get healthy or in game shape which leads to all these injuries.
thecoffinnail
Flippinbats: I never heard any of that but I would have to agree he sounds like an egotistical jerk. To hot dog a team that is still paying your salary and worst of all the teammates that carried the team while he was injured just seems rude.
its_happening
Flippin bats re-wrote the history and what he said isn’t fact.
dimitrios in la
So what is fact?
its_happening
His agent did not beg for a release. His agent found out the Jays didn’t believe Gurriel was the future SS, after Atkins said Gurriel would be the starting SS if the season began that very day, then discussed the situation with his client. Thereafter worked out a release.
What Tulo did at spring training wasn’t hot dog. I’m sure if anyone hit a homer for the first time in nearly 2 years while being told you are done, washed up and should retire might be a bit pumped. Maybe.
As for his comments after the game….well, right now the Jays organization isn’t proving Tulo or Donaldson or anyone else wrong right now. Any criticism is warranted. For now.

flippinbats79
Criticism is warranted? Tulo thought he was still an elite player. They released him and signed Freddy Galvis instead. Freddy has been one of the best SS in baseball so far. Tulo was bad in 13 at bats, suffered an injury, and now a setback. I would say our front office did a pretty bang on evaluation. And yes, Tulo is an egotistical jerk which is why they would rather pay him to play for the Yankees than have him within 100′ of their young players. Oh and they used his 40 man spot to steal Elvis Luciano which so far looks brilliant. #scouteyes
its_happening
Tulo thought he was an elite player? Find that quote.
What evaluation are you talking about? You want the Jays to win? They’d be better off with Urena gaining experience at SS at this point. Galvis is just a guy they will probably trade for probably a nothing prospect. If you think Galvis will garner a return in a trade you’d be sorely mistaken.
Luciano pick is brilliant? Yeah, sure. By the way, they used a 25-man roster spot. That’s more accurate.
Atkins praised Tulo’s professionalism. I guess he was bang-on, like you said!
So does this mean you are Jimmer’s burner account since you used the hashtag? Otherwise that is infringement and you should probably find something original.

No I am not flipping. He doesn’t even spell it correctly.
As for Tulo his SS days are long over. 1B or DH which has said no too. He will likely soon retire. The real #Scoutseyes

Want this guy out of baseball

You forgot his bat flip after a walk in spring training! Plus saying “once great” should be taken literally. He was ONCE great waaay back in the thin air days of Denver.

The Padres really have Paddack and Mejia because the Marlins are inept
Show Me Your Tatis
Mejia didn’t come from the Marlins dude
I Believe We Can Win
Mejia came from brad hand who came from the marlins.
Show Me Your Tatis
Good point. The Marlins’ ineptness also got them Josh Naylor.
DarkSide830
and nearly got them Luis Castillo too
I Believe We Can Win
Tatis Jr cause white sox are inept- James shields
Eric Lauer cause Royals are inept- Ian kennedy
Matt strahm cause the Royals are inept again.
Kirby yates cause the angels are inept.
Pretty much their entire roster and minors system has been built upon other teams being inept.
davidcoonce74
I would argue that Tatis had nothing to do with the White Sox being inept but rather Preller’s scouting acumen. Remember that Tatis had never played an actual game when he was traded. He was just a kid with a name. Yates is a good example of the Padres being really good at identifying good bullpen arms and building them. Hand as well – remember that he was a failed starter when the Padres got him.
San Diego, despite being a bad team for a long time, has been very good at revamping bad pitchers from other teams into great bullpen pieces..
Strike Four
That’s how almost all good teams get good though. Rays have been caking off other teams ineptitude for a long time now.
thecoffinnail
Almost had Luis Castillo too. Marlins couldn’t wait to give him away.

Not really.
njbirdsfan
Padres fans…a month and a half of good play and they’re already talking trash and other teams are inept.
I’m sure throwing $300M at Machado had absolutely nothing to do with their success.
DarkSide830
Lauer was drafted by the Padres…
csspackler
Yes. That statement was technically incorrect. Lauer was drafted by the Padres with the draft selection granted when Kennedy declined his qualifying offer. He was later signed by KC.
thecoffinnail
Kirby Yates doesn’t count. He was passed around baseball like Annie Savoy until he learned his split finger fastball.
Also, a team is bound to hit on a few when they collect former high ceiling players. Sometimes they turn it around and sometimes (Will Middlebrooks, Luis Sardinas) they don’t. I do hope Adam Warren works out though. I have always liked him.
Some teams could also thank the Padres for being inept as well. I bet you would rather have Rizzo playing first than Hosmer (at half the cost too). Trea Turner would be nice at 2nd instead of Kinsler (at half the cost too). Plus, Turner would be a nice option in CF when Urias takes over 2nd for good. Also, if they still had Turner, Wil Myers wouldn’t be soaking up a bunch of payroll. You know what they say man, glass houses and all.
I Believe We Can Win
Turner cant stay healthy. Has only ever played over 100 games once in 4 seasons so far. Only played 4 games this year too. As talented as he is your best ability is your availability.
Show Me Your Tatis
“Turner can’t stay healthy.”
Yeah he can. How many days since he signed his first professional contract back in 2014 has he spent on the DL/IL for non HBP-related injuries? And in how many of those four seasons has he spent even one day on the DL/IL?
Show Me Your Tatis
Paddack had his Tommy John surgery in 2016. Not 2017

Jays have a great prospect in Gurriel Jr and they are messing with him because they want players that will play every position as if that is going to help them win. Get Gurriel Jr the psychological help he needs and his throws will get better from 2nd and SS. He needs help.
Shame that Tulo is hurt again. I like watching him play. He doesn’t belong at SS anymore though. Too much pounding on the body. He is a first basemen or a DH. Why won’t teams realize this? Yeeesh.
andrewgauldin
Gurriel wasn’t hitting anyways. Bichette and Guerrero have the left side of that infield locked up for many years. Biggio and others have second. Leaving Lourdes in the infield is not only going to waste time but going to kill his confidence. Moving him to the outfield will allow him to focus more on his bat. At the very least, he becomes a utility player rather than what he is right now.
Cam
You’re banking on prospects becoming guaranteed long term Major Leaguers. That’s a bad idea.
davidcoonce74
Hitting prospects have a much greater success rate, though. Pitching prospects are the ones that are problematic, because TINSTAAPP, because of injury.
SuperSinker
It’s really no different than banking on major league players staying guaranteed long term major leaguers. There are no guarantees in this sport.
Down with OBP
I thought he was countering the idea that Lourdes was one of the jays big prospects?
its_happening
Drury wasn’t hitting and he wasn’t demoted. Drury has been a headcase and continues to skate.
Jansen wasn’t hitting. Still isn’t. He wasn’t demoted.
The point? Gurriel was demoted for his D and to say he wasn’t hitting first 3 weeks in the season is a weak argument. “Gurriel wasn’t hitting anyways”. Yeah, the entire team was such an offensive juggernaut….
jimmertee
You couldn’t be more wrong. Guerrero is going to end up at first base. Period.
Bichette will be a below average 2nd baseman/ middle ultitity guy. Kinda Ryan Goins like.
Try another profession, scouting probably not your forte.
Ruccuser
He also said he would not play anything besides shortstop in his final days with the Jay’s then said he would play other positions once released. He never appears to do any extra work to keep or stay healthy or which leads to all these injuries.
its_happening
Gurriel was demoted 3 weeks ago, and NOW they decide to give him time in the outfield? Did it not occur to the organization that they have some serious holes in the outfield, Grichuk included? The decision should have been obvious the second he was demoted. It took a bad series in Anaheim and a second look at the organization’s depth to come to this realization. Nothing has changed. How they didn’t realize this is troubling.
As it stands, Guerrero 3B, Bichette SS, Biggio 2B, Tellez 1B with Urena at utility. Someone had to move to the outfield. We knew this, or at least should have.
Still a hole in CF. Alford can’t defend in CF and can’t hit in AAA. Grichuk can’t defend in CF and is not a leader. Teoscar can’t track balls period. That position needs to be addressed.
Considering the organization’s faith in Gurriel at SS, Tulo was right to say what he said. Atkins gave Tulo praise for his professionalism and yet Jays fans want to fabricate the situation regarding Tulo. Typical.

“Is not a leader”

Biggio is brutal at 2B, he will most likely be a COF in mlb.
its_happening
Biggio’s numbers at 2B say otherwise. Not amazing, certainly not brutal. Why aren’t you calling Bichette brutal at SS? His numbers would warrant it more than Biggio’s at 2B. I’d be more concerned over Bo’s defense if the Jays plan to have him be the future shortstop.
jimmertee
Biggio is going to be a very good player at the MLB level. He’ll probably end up in left field the most.
Strike Four
A’s should have signed Kimbrel in the offseason and still should sign him now Treinen’s hurt.
athleticsnchill
Kimbrel’s lack of flexibility and cost, both in terms of actual monetary cost and the draft pick we’d give up, are the reason we didn’t and won’t. The team isn’t playing well enough for them to pony up for him if we lose Treinen.
Also he got an anti-inflammatory yesterday and he’s feeling a lot better today, so there’s a chance he won’t need a stint on the IL.
