The Pirates have designated infielder Jake Elmore for assignment and selected the contract of catcher Jacob Stallings from Triple-A Indianapolis, per Adam Berry of MLB.com. The club has also placed injured catcher Francisco Cervelli on the seven-day concussion IL and recalled outfielder Jose Osuna from Indianapolis.
Elmore spent just under two full weeks on the Pirates’ roster, as they promoted him May 13 to take the injured Jung Ho Kang’s 25-man spot. He collected just one hit (a single) and no walks in 20 plate appearances thereafter, making it easier for the Pirates to subject him to DFA limbo. Formerly a Diamondback, Astro, Red, Ray and Brewer, the 31-year-old Elmore is a meager .208/.287/.269 hitter in 498 career PA. However, Elmore has been an asset at the minors’ top level, especially during a .380/.444/.546 showing in 124 trips to the plate this year.
Pittsburgh outrighted Stallings off its 40-man May 17, but he’s quickly back to help cover for Cervelli. The 29-year-old has appeared in the majors in five straight seasons and combined for a .286/.325/.325 line in 83 PA.

Anyone know the number of known concussions Cervelli has had?
Captain Jack
Real concussions? Zero…
Cervelli is the weakest catcher the Pirates has ever run out onto the field. One or two foul tips and he’s on the bench. Makes you appreciate guys like Kendall or Martin, who fight thru the pain and continue to grind.
At 10 Million a year, the guys a joke.

So are you a Captain or a doctor?
You could have made a solid case for Cervelli not being worth the money, but man, you really went about it in a way that’s wrong on multiple levels.
Captain Jack
Connfyoozed – OK, I did go about that the wrong way. My apologies. I’m a little hot from the Dodgers sweep.
Batty – As a Pirate, he only suffered two concussion protocols. One, June 27th, 2017 for 7 days but cleared all protocols and this past week. With the Yankees, March 6th, 2010 he was hit in the head. Shortly after, he suffered another while playing winter ball which prompted the Yankees to switch his mask to the Rawlings S-200 which can withstand 100 MPH fastballs.
So, it’s his 4th concussion protocol since 2010 while 2 were negative as he suffered from a broken jaw. He has had a history of “cluster migranes” which he cannot shake.

Thanks for trolling, Dr. Jack. Now go away.

Batty- not sure, but he has missed time it seems more and more over the last couple of years.
Captain-I think that anyone who plays catcher has guts. They do not call them the “ tools of ignorance “ for nothing.
The long term effects of numerous concussions are more well known now than they were even 5-10 years ago, mainly from football players.I was surprised at Cervelli’s contract amount too,but the Pirates knew that they had a good catcher and they appreciated him.He has been an integral part of the Pirates although his time there may be short.
Comfy-I always enjoy your comments.
I just hope that they do not lose Stallings as he deserves a chance to play now.
