TODAY: Quantrill’s contract has been selected. Reliever Phil Maton was optioned down, while righty Miguel Diaz was shifted to the 60-day injured list to create 40-man space.
YESTERDAY: The Padres will promote pitching prospect Cal Quantrill to the majors this Wednesday, according to MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell. He’s expected to start the club’s game that day in Atlanta.
Quantrill, 24, was the eighth overall pick in the 2016 draft and commanded top-100 leaguewide prospect billing entering the 2017 and 2018 campaigns. His rise up the rankings stalled out after a suboptimal ’18 effort, though there’s still plenty of reason to hope he’ll be a quality MLB hurler.
This promotion represents a continuation of the Friars’ strategy for managing their bevy of unproven young talent and designs on contention. Quantrill may only be up briefly to begin — the five members of the existing rotation are expected to continue working in a starting capacity — but could be called upon several times throughout the year to help spread innings around. It’s certainly also possible that he could command more opportunities in the majors based upon his own showing.
Quantrill has still yet to master the upper minors, which is likely why he was bypassed when the San Diego organization brought up a series of other young pitchers this year. He’s now carrying a 4.68 ERA in 25 innings over five starts on the year at Triple-A, though that comes with a solid combination of 8.6 K/9 against 2.9 BB/9 along with a 48.6% groundball rate. Quantrill should be ready for a full workload after reaching 148 innings in 2018.
In the event that Quantrill is able to command an active roster spot for the rest of the season, he could accrue as many as 152 days of service. That’d be enough to set him up for future Super Two qualification but not enough to reach a full year of service (which requires 172 days). The club will need to add Quantrill to the 40-man roster before activating him.

Good for Cal. I grew up very near where he did and am just a couple of years old than him. Been following him for awhile now. Best of luck in the Majors.

I wonder whose 40 man does he get?
I think he gets Espinoza, the last I checked he wasn’t formerly taken off the 40 man and he already had a second tommy John but I could be wrong
dray16
Cordero to the 60-day? Haven’t heard much on him and he’s almost been out a month. I believe Espinoza is still on 40-man as well.
AaronMC
Likely to be Espinoza due to 2nd TJ.
lowtalker1
I thought Cordero was already there

I’m thinking tatis Jr is more injured than it seems. not much. maybe 20 day?
lowtalker1
I don’t think he is
You don’t rush back from that and they need a full squad in this stretch of games.
At least they have another short stop on the team
papadrefan
10 day I mean
nymetsking
Only the 60 day would clear up a spot on the 40.
Show Me Your Tatis
It’ll be Espinoza

His numbers in AAA don’t quite tell full story. He gave up 8 runs in his season debut. Since then, Quantrill owns a 2.86 ERA with a strikeout per inning.
jbigz12
Still the 8 walks in 22 innings since then is less than ideal.

Oh Canada! Him plus Soroka is a big time presence for young Canadian SPs
its_happening
Cal’s minor league numbers say otherwise.
jbigz12
Considering Canada has 3 SP in the big leagues. (2 actually but Pivetta will make it back eventually) it is exciting. It’s Paxton and Soroka. That’s it for a whole country. I can understand why Canadians would be excited to see another. Why don’t we go ahead and give him a shot there Trim. Quantrill goes from El Paso to Petco. That ought to help. He looks like more of a back end guy but we shall see. Nonetheless should be exciting if you’re a Canadian baseball fan.
cookmeister 2
isn’t Taillon Canadian?
jbigz12
Texan. Couldn’t be any further. Though I can see why the last name might cause you to think that.
its_happening
jbigz – Braves said “big time presence”. Big time presence? Even you can agree that’s a bit far-fetched for Canadian starting pitchers.
I’d also argue it’s not very good considering the number of Canadians playing elite baseball and the much larger number of US scholarships secured by Canadians. It is great to see fellow Canadians reaching the major leagues without question.

Taillon is a duel American-Canadian citizen. Both of his parents were born in Canada so he becomes a duel citizen even though I doubt he’s ever lived there. Same goes for Freddie Freeman. Was really cool watching him play in the WBC for them.
dvmin98
His first appearance he gave up 8 ER. Since then, he’s had an ERA under 3

Ninth 3 Year Plan
Besides draft pedigree, he’s a bucket of meh
scarfish
Wonder if he ends up being more effective in a bullpen role like papa quantrill.
Monkey’s Uncle
I was just going to ask if he was Paul’s kid, thanks for saving me the trouble.
bluemonday
Re Jamieson Taillon. Almost right, he’s American, but has dual citizenship as both parents Canadian, he even pitched for Canada in the WBC.

Exciting for Canadian baseball good luck to Cal.

How is this kid ? Is he a sinker baller, two seamer guy like his dad was ?
dray16
low to mid-ninties FB, not a lot of movement, throws both 4 & 2, but more 4 seamers, average CB, great change up.
lowtalker1
So who they holding the Espinoza spot for?
csspackler
Espinoza.
J/k. They haven’t even put him on the injured list yet.

Absolute stud

How many out there scooped him up in fantasy for (at least) his start tonight?
bravesfan88
It probably wouldn’t have been a bad idea, the Braves typically always seemingly struggle against guys making their ML debuts…
Quantrill actually didn’t pitch that bad tonight, btw, he just got out dueled by his opponent Max Fried.
Speaking of Fried, he’s put those blister issues behind him, and he’s blossomed into an absolute stud for the Braves this year..!! With Soroka and Fried pitching lights out, and with Folty on the mend, the Braves really need two other starters to step up and lock down the last remaining spots for their rotation.
Gausman and Teheran both have been absolutely blah…Every once in awhile they will show some flashes, but you can count on 6-7IP, and 3-4R every time they pitch, which isn’t terrible, but it isn’t good either…That’s especially the case when you have Touki, Newk, Wright, and Wilson raring to get another chance at AAA…
With Swanson and Albies stepping up, their offense is solid, and their bullpen is very slowly starting to come together. Tomlin, Webb, Jackson, and Winkler are holding down the fort for now, but Minter, Carle, Venters, and Biddle are going to have to step it up moving forward…
And again for those who were so quick to rant and rave about how mediocre and bad Swanson was, I hope they’re gladly watching what the kid can do when he is fully healthy!! He’s a clubhouse leader, an excellent defender, and he’s a solid situational, clutch hitter. The kid has ice in his veins, and I’m ecstatic that his wrist is healthy, and he is getting to prove his naysayers and doubters wrong!!
bjupton100
If they’re serious about contending this year they should package a few pitchers/prospects with Myers, and two million a year for KK plus from the Rays.
