I’m annoyed by the owners or players argument. Heyward shouldn’t give up his guaranteed contract, but to not acknowledge that he’s a bad and over paid baseball player is a disservice to the readers… to reiterate, Heyward should never give up guaranteed money, but to indicate that The Ricketts family is the only to benefit (rather than allocating those “saved funds” to Kimbrel or another player down the line) is a bad and missed argument.
jimmyz
You’re making an assumption that the Ricketts would spend the money Heyward forfeits and that’s not guaranteed. However I like the idea of the Ricketts donating that money to charity as opposed to Jeff’s suggestion of dropping it out of an airplane over Chicago. That just sounds like someone or multiple people might end up in a hospital and most of the money will be blown in bars or with drug dealers because why not with free money. Though as someone who cooks for a living, extra money to bartenders, bar backs and servers isn’t terrible.
jb19
It’s not guaranteed the Ricketts wouldn’t spend the money, no, but the assumption is always “the billionaires get more money because the player X didn’t get paid”, which is a fundamentally incorrect assumption to be made… the rest of your comment is funny. How do you know the good folks of Chicago won’t enroll in community college or purchase a vehicle to get to a better job across town that is currently inaccessible? You go straight to street fights, drugs and alcohol.

There is a ridiculous amount of violent crime in Chicago. I could see how people would jump to that opinion.
jimmyz
Didn’t mean that as a slight to Chicago one bit, I’d expect that to happen in most if not all cities should millions of dollars fall from the sky.
DarkSide830
yes, use a two way player just off TJ every day. VERY wise.
Strike Four
Yeah hitters throw the ball alllll the time when they’re in the batters box…
TreyMancini
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I seem to remember that hitters use their arms while hitting…
Melchez
Ohtani vs Tiger pitching… He will do just fine.

“Who is underrating Jacob deGrom?”
The Bleacher Report article from last year that tried to predict the BBWAA awards, had Scherzer winning the NL Cy Young and had their explanation as “No offense to Jacob deGrom, but this one should be unanimous.” Also ESPN’s Michael Wilbon who said, and I quote, “If deGrom goes 8-11 and wins the Cy Young, then all the people voting for the Cy Young should be dismissed.”
jorge78
He would have gone 20-9
if he had decent run support. He did his job
well…..
getright11
Literally, the last two places you should care about are BR and Wilbon.
Sky14
Agreed, Wilbon really has no credibility when talking about baseball.
SalaryCapMyth
I found the BR article you are talking about in October last year and it doesnt say what you are saying. Couldnt pull a link from my droid but if you google the title:
Final 2018 MLB Awards Race Odds for MVP, Cy Young, ROY and More
Anyone can read for themselves that this source is not underrating DeGrom. Also, it should be said that DeGrom didnt just squeek out the CY from Sherzer. It was a land slide victory of 29 first place votes out of 30.
Provide some sources to your “quotation marks” please because DeGrom certainly does NOT seem like he is being underrated.

They published several “BBWAA awards predictions” articles last year like they do every year. The one I was thinking of was from around June or July.

Fun fact: a sac fly lowers the players OBP
spinach
Well it’s a plate appearance where the player doesn’t get on base so this is noteworthy why?
In related news, a walk raises a player’s OBP.
TreyMancini
It’s just fun cuz with sac flies a player’s batting average can actually be higher than his OBP. Sac flies don’t affect BA.
