Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera left the team’s game against the Braves on Friday with right knee soreness, manager Ron Gardenhire told Chris McCosky of the Detroit News and other reporters. Cabrera will undergo an MRI.
“I felt it at the plate the last three games — I didn’t use my legs too much,” Cabrera said (via McCosky).
Thanks in part to his knee pain, Cabrera failed to reach base in any of his three plate appearances Friday. The future Hall of Famer, 36, has trudged through an uncharacteristically difficult season to this point. Cabrera owns a .284/.356/.356 line, good for a 93 wRC+, through 219 trips to the plate. The longtime 30-home run threat has shown almost no power along the way, with two HRs and the majors’ third-worst ISO (.072).
While Cabrera’s performance has been a letdown, the durability he has shown thus far has been encouraging. After missing all but 38 games a year ago because of a ruptured left biceps tendon, he has come back to appear in each of Detroit’s 54 contests this season. This injury could snap that streak, though, and would leave the Tigers to choose among Brandon Dixon, Niko Goodrum and John Hicks to handle first.

Full time DH time…cmon Miggy, it’s time
Disco Dave
vmart esque…play 1st in NL parks and once every 10 games…we would need him in the 2022 world series!
grime99
In short order it sounds like miggy will end up with the prince fielder treatment. He will no longer play but not be medically cleared for some random malady. In turn insurance picks up majority of the money owed….no chance he is still playing past 2021, wouldn’t be surprised to see it sooner. Insane that he is signed through 2023
SuperSinker
You pay discounts for triple crown threats in their prime, and overpay their decline phase. It isn’t unusual to see this happen. Miggy should’ve been making 50+ million in his prime, this is how the market corrects for that.

Prince Fielder had multiple cervical spinal fusions after multiple herniated discs. It wasn’t a random malady. His neck issues was certainly not helped by him being obese.

Oy, come on this guy was on his way to being one of the all time greats. Now people are gonna think he’s a washed up always injured has been, like pujols. It’s a shame. It’s just shows how some of the old timers are the best in the game to be able to last like they did
SuperSinker
Pujols is one of the best baseball players we’ve ever seen. Grow up.
ShieldF123
No need to jump on the guy. I think what he’s trying to say is that the lasting memory a lot of fans will have of Pujols will be him the last several years of his career as a washed up, below-replacement level player.
Pujols is an all-time great and was amazing to watch for years, but he’s been bad enough for long enough on a big contract that some fans will forget that. It’s unfortunate but true.
chicagofan1978
Thank you for understanding what I was saying. I saw pujols playing for years against the Cubs when they were on wgn here in Chicago. It was so easy to root for him against the Cubs. Miggy is the same, he had some monsters years and was almost impossible to get out.
racosun
Well, to be fair to Miggy, .284 is no slouch. For him, yes, but most guys would love to slump their way to a .284 batting average. Miggy hasn’t had his legs all year, and it shows.
chasfh 2
I don’t think many major leaguers would like to slump their way to a .356 SLG, though.
eeddiiee909
hope he isn’t done with his Career.
Yep it is
Love Miggy but his career is over and has been for awhile
tigersfan1320
He’s still hitting almost .300, how is his career over? Just because he doesn’t hit for power doesn’t mean he can’t be productive still

If I remember right. The Ohio State quarterback was back within a week after knee surgery. Might not be a major thing. Amazing after losing 12 of 13, Tigers where only 5.5 games out of 2nd place.
Luke Strong
When they gave him the contract, it seemed like common knowledge that he probably wasn’t going to be much of a player by the latter years, and while I think it’s obvious he could afford to be a little more lean, this contract is now one of the three most franchise-crippling in baseball alongside Puljos and Chris Davis. Now he’s facing another injury plagued season… the IL seems inevitable for him. The Tigers are going to lose with or without him in this total throw-away season, so there’s no sense rushing him back out there to play hurt.
It’ll be interesting to see how his contract is going to play out… it has seemed highly doubtful he has it in him to be able to play at even replacement level value going forward.
stymeedone
They’re in a rebuild. They have lots of payroll space to use. Other than it preventing a trade, his contract is not crippling at all. Give him time to heal.
68tigers84
I think they need to go back to the disabled list(instead of the IL). Way more injury’s with this IL system. Tigers lose 4 starters, Judge, Stanton, etc.

“PANIC IN DETROIT”
Please people, chill out. MRI in a professional athlete is like us getting an X-Ray. Going into last night’s game, Cabrera was hitting .447 with a .989 OPS with RISP. He has been productive this year when it counts.
GarryHarris
Brandon Dixon is the best hitting player on the Tigers so far. I hope he gets plying time now.
jaydiare
So far he have a decent season but he is not the super star anymore. His BA this year is not that bad, he is hitting the ball he should consider to drop some weight though
