The Mets have placed infielder Robinson Cano and infielder/outfielder Jeff McNeil on the 10-day injured list due to a quad strain and a hamstring strain, respectively, manager Mickey Callaway said prior to today’s series finale against the Nationals. Taking their place on the active roster will be infielder Luis Guillorme and left-hander Ryan O’Rourke, each of whom has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.
Injuries continue to mount in Queens, where the Mets now have Cano, McNeil, Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto all on the injured list (in addition to Jed Lowrie and Yoenis Cespedes — neither of whom has played a game in 2019). The Mets have also been without Jason Vargas for three weeks — though Callaway noted that he is lined up to return this weekend — and recently lost key righty Seth Lugo to a shoulder issue.
With Cano and McNeil hitting the shelf and Lowrie still inactive, the Mets’ top three options at second base are all temporarily out of the picture. Presumably, Adeiny Hechavarria and the aforementioned Guillorme will split time there. Other infield options such as Todd Frazier and J.D. Davis lack any real experience at the position (beyond 38 games from Frazier a decade ago in the minors).
The Mets’ entire Opening Day outfield is now on the injured list with McNeil out of commission for the time being. They’re left with defensive standout Juan Lagares and minor league signees Carlos Gomez and Rajai Davis, each of whom returned to the Majors within the past week. Each of that trio can handle all three outfield spots, so while the Mets currently don’t have a conventional fourth outfielder on the roster, they can mix and match between that threesome and J.D. Davis, who has experience in the outfield corners, when filling out the lineup card on a daily basis.

NOOOOO!
SDFriars
At least they have Jared Kelenic and Justin Dunn in the pipeline…. wait…. nope nevermind.
Jdice150
Kelenic is playing A ball… hardly makes a difference to the injuries on the MLB roster. Why make the ridiculous statements?
bad bruce
Because he’s a troll who is clueless about this sport.
RootedInOakland
cuz they were desperate win-now moves for a roster that is the 3rd best in their own division? Brodie was too impatient, especially when u consider the Wilpons will never break the bank for this team, gotta be more prudent than trading for Cano’s bloated contract
CharlieH
Wrong. Cano’s contract was part of the ransom for Edwin Diaz. #factsmatter
bravesiowafan
Still a sunken cost cano was part of the deal his performance matters

Any sane organization would have just signed one of the many free agent closers available instead of picking uo a 5 year 120 million dollar contract and giving up 2 prospects for a closer. The Mets ownership loved that trade because it gave them 20 million dollars the first year. They think about the now not the future and they will pay a big cost for it
Jdice150
You want to talk about the future? After the 2020 season, the Mets only have like $73 million in guaranteed contracts? God, they’re HAMSTRUNG by Cano… Mind you they are operating at what $160 million right now?
Society just loves to operate on instant gratification. Call the deal a failure after it’s over, not 50 games into the first season.
Roll
you also forget it opened up 1st base for alonso or of spot for mcneil for regular at bats along with unloaded around 40 million between bruce and swarziak.
jk2me1310
Can everyone just chill with the Kelenic stuff? It’s A ball. you know who absolutely destroyed A, A+ and AA ball at 18 and 19 years old? Lastings Milledge.
Prospects are just that, prospects.
SDFriars
The #42 overall prospect in baseball. Evaluators think 2020 is a real possibility for an ETA in the bigs. Will everyone chill on ignoring the value of talented minor league prospects. In the game today, if you dont recognize the value of young cost controlled talent then you are ignorant. The comment wasnt made to troll, it was made to show how terrible the idea of making that ridiculous trade was. People can be ignorant of prospects but then they should really be responding to comments critical of trades.
njbirdsfan
It comes off as trollish because you see what happened in San Diego and just ASSUME that Kelenic and Dunn will become superstars. I mean come on, even Tatis and Paddack are what 50 games into a career? Hell, Dom Brown put up more of a track record than that before he quickly flamed out.
BTW, for all the grief you’re laying on the Mets, congratulations, the Padres are what, 2.5 games of them? And have never won anything? Excuse me while I alert ESPN over a couple of prospects who may or may not pan into anything.
And let’s assume neither Kelenic or Dunn don’t work out…are you going to be back to let everyone know you’re wrong….because I’m sure you’ll be back if they are in fact superstars.
24TheKid
If Kelenic and Dunn don’t work out, it’s still a win for the Mariners to get out of the Cano deal.
ntorsky
What the hell are they putting in the New York water these days?
DarkSide830
same thing the mets have been drinking for years. Yankees are just trying to best their injured list numbers.
robbiecraig
Time to sign Brandon Phillips.
towinagain
Padres have some pieces…
CardsNation5
It’s crazy that Cano was criticized and benched for not hustling and soon as he starts to, he gets injured. Smh
Briffle2
Well when you’re body isn’t used to doing something, you increase the chances of getting injured.
FrankieBaby
Cano breaking down without his roids.
Willy Mays
No surprise Cano got injured running hard to first. He was doing something his body wasn’t used to
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
Typical DUMB Mets move. Giving up a young talented prospect so they shouldn’t spend $$$ to get a Closer on the Market. The Wontpons are so stupid they will end up paying more for Cano’s contract when they waive him in year 3 than if they had just signed a good arm for 3-4 years,.
bleacherbum
Time for the Mets and Padres to link up on a deal.
The Mets have the piece the Padres want.
The Padres have the prospects w/service time that could allow the Mets to overcome this rash of injuries by acquiring a handful of prospects that can help now/ then eventually big time later.
Padres acquire: SP Noah Syndergaard
Mets acquire: 2B/SS: Luis Urias #3 in system (24th in MiLB), LHP: Logan Allen # 6 in system (68th in MiLB), 3B: Hudson Potts #12 in system, just outside top 100 and OF: Edward Olivares #20 in system.
That should be enough to get something started and peak interest on both sides.
jvent
As a Mets fan I would do that but replace the OF or the 3b with Mejia
Might be difficult for Urias to play with Cano at 2b, for me I would try to
find someone to take Cano’s contract even if the Mets have to pay some
of the contract. My Mets inf. Would be Alonso,Urias,Rosario,JD Davis and Mejia.
bleacherbum
How much is left on Cano’s deal that NYM is responsible for?
towinagain
As a Padres fan that works. Mejia gives the Mets a blossoming catcher and Urias a 2b with major upside. The Pads get the vet we need. Both clubs get the publicity, locally and nationally. Mets and Pads trade makes perfect sense!
bleacherbum
Mets acquire: C -Francisco Mejia, LHP Logan Allen, 3B- Hudson Potts and RHP Mason Thompson.
Padres acquire: SP: Noah Syndergaard
That’s a nice haul for Noah, in which 3 of the 4 pieces are near ready to help now. Mejia obviously being the closest,
Temporary Name
Dipoto should get executive of the year for that trade. Not only did he get out of that contract but he got the number 6 pick of the draft and did not have to lose a hundred games. He also got Dunn, the Mets top pitching prospect another first rounder. Prospects are suspects ,I know, but they are still assets.
Fersen
Hope Cano is out for the season ; he’s no example for young players .
