The Mariners announced that they’ve claimed right-hander Jimmy Cordero off waivers from the Blue Jays. Seattle also transferred righty Gerson Bautista from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL.
Cordero will report to Triple-A Tacoma with his new organization, though maybe he shouldn’t get too comfortable. The Jays just claimed Cordero off waivers from the Nationals on May 15, only to designate him May 23. Interestingly enough, Toronto jettisoned Cordero to grab lefty Zac Rosscup off waivers from his new team, the Mariners.
The 27-year-old Cordero debuted in the majors with the Nationals last season, when he threw 19 innings out of their bullpen. He added another 1 1/3 with the Blue Jays before they cut him. Between the two teams, Cordero has pitched to a 5.75 ERA/5.96 FIP with matching strikeout and walk rates of 5.31 per nine and a strong groundball percentage (53.4). The hard-throwing Cordero has been better at the Triple-A level, where he owns a 3.41 ERA with 10.4 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9 over 63 1/3 frames.

shouldve just kept Rosscup.
BuddyBoy
Nope. Rosscup is garbage that was lit by RH hitters and couldn’t consistently throw strikes to lefties

This explains why the Blue Jays want him.
jimmertee
Why? Waste of time and money not to mention jerking around with people’s lives for players that likely will never do anything successful in the majors.

Jimmer, I pretty much said this a year ago. Blue Jays fans weren’t having it. This would have been solved by adding Travis Bergen to the 40-man or converting garbage starter Shawn Morimando in AAA since the Jays haven’t cut him and he can’t cut it in Buffalo. It also sends the wrong message to the minor league players killing themselves to reach the show. A performing AAA or AA pitcher in their mid-20s can take that spot and get that shot rather than a never-will-be off the scrapyard.
jimmertee
Yup, I remember you mentioning it. I totally agree.
Why wouldn’t they call up Sean Reid Foley or someone like that? He has an arm, is doing terrible in AAA but could take advantage of major league coaches etc. If someone can help him get his control under check, he could be a very good pitcher and are AAA coaches likely to help out with that?

I’d be fine with Shafer or Patrick Murphy or William Oullette. Kirby Snead, a lefty specialist. There are guys in the system. They might crap the bed, but that’s fine! This is how a team grows. This is how an organization instills confidence in their organization; you perform, you get rewarded. Not grabbing guys off waivers. Forget them.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand he’s gone!

Mariners 10-30 last 40 games doesn’t matter what they do
