Yankees southpaw James Paxton has been on the injured list since May 5 because of left knee inflammation, but it’s up in the air whether a return is imminent. Paxton said he still felt “something” in his knee during a bullpen session Friday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports. While Paxton added he “woke up this morning feeling pretty good,” he’ll face an important test Sunday during another bullpen session.
As if injuries to Paxton and other key cogs haven’t troubled the Yankees enough this year, right-hander Masahiro Tanaka departed his start Saturday against the Rays after six innings with a right shin contusion, James Wagner of the New York Times was among those to tweet. X-rays came back negative, but Tanaka expressed uncertainty after the game whether he’ll be able to make his next start.
Although the Yankees have gone without injured ace Luis Severino all season, Paxton and Tanaka have done their best to keep the team’s rotation among the majors’ top staffs thus far. In the process, they’ve helped New York not only stay afloat in the standings, but thrive.
The heat-throwing Paxton, a former Mariner who’s in his first year as a Yankee, tossed 37 2/3 innings of 3.11 ERA/2.51 FIP ball and posted a lofty 12.42 K/9 prior to landing on the IL. Tanaka, meanwhile, was brilliant Saturday, continuing a strong season in which he has notched a 3.09 ERA/3.80 FIP across a team-best 58 1/3 frames. It’s unclear how the Bombers would replace Tanaka should he miss time. The Yankees are already set to deploy reliever Chad Green as an opener Sunday because they’re lacking a healthy fifth starter behind Tanaka, Domingo German, C.C. Sabathia and J.A. Happ, having just lost Jonathan Loaisiga for several weeks because of a shoulder strain.

I would not be opposed to them going after Keuchel after the amateur draft. Great arm, and after the draft no pick compensation. Only question is if they can last that long without another SP.

I think every team is set on holding out for a couple more weeks on Kimbrel and Keuchel. It’ll take a few minor league appearances to get them up to speed anyway, so no reason to waste a draft pick now unless the price is insanely low

I agree 100%. I would get him now or try b4 competition comes. He wants a winner and a stage to get a big deal in offseason. He comes to yanks and does great and “saves” them it will help his resume. And everyone thinks he’s done. He’s not. He’s a pettite type pitcher. Give him 1-$20 (it will be prorated) or 2/$35-37 3/ $50 mil. Or offer a multi year discount offer. If not and it’s the 1 year- if he pitches well then resign him. Unless Cash can get a Cleveland Ace w/o giving up top minor leaguers- Miggy, Frazier, Adams, Some Of’s as They need. Maybe Cessa, Abreu (he’s not a starter- he will be converted probably).
If Gio falls apart we have DJ and Estrada for 3rd and we need a LF as frazier is not the answer. He’s too streaky and his D stinks. A lf who can play Cf on occasion is what we need if Gardy is gone in 2020
Signing Dallas will give us a look at him. See if we want him longer term. Sevy may not come Back his old self. He has a serious injury. German is a ?, Tanaka is gone soon or will be resigned Forbes 4-5th starter and Monty is a ?.
Got to think ahead with ace SP not growing in trees as often as in past and we cannot develop starters. Devi Garcia looks good but, at 19 yo he won’t be at 200 innings for 2-4 years. And we have other young international FA who look good. Years away. Miggy is now very behind defensively and won’t have this year to get better and won’t be able to throw at 100% until the winter. And he’s already 25yo. He has lead feet. If we can get value based on his 2018 #’s then you have to really consider it. We have enough no D, injury prone guys to have a 3rd baseman who has horrible range. And DH is filled and teach him 1st? Not done in ST. It’s not easy.
Dallas signing will help us in many ways. But, I’m sure his agent won’t sign him without a bidding war in June. Unless Dallas wants the yanks and wants to actually pitch in June by pitching In minor league Games as an ST otherwise he’s won’t be sharp until July as he’s not a power pitcher, needs location and that takes reps.
I’m thinking 2020 as I have a bad feeling sevy and Judge don’t cone back or aRe average at best upon return. Houston is really strong this year. So, if we can have a full squad for 2020, better contact hitters and better D with an improved Judge, Stanton and Sevy not being average August-October like past years and German maybe turning corner with no innings limit in 2020 and a new LF’r/ hopefully a contact guy with some pop- 15-20hr is ok if he gets 160+ hits a year and doubles power with solid D then we only have 2 worry- Sanchez. And trying to develop a first baseman for future.
And resigning Didi! This all comes from observation of our competitors. We are not a WS team. A string reg season team who is not clutch, conditioned well to perform at high level or experienced enough for post season run. We are winning by using lots of bandaids. And the glue fails at some point. Still go for it, but use trade season with 2020 in mind. And have the analytics guys watch baseball in person – even from 1990’s on video so they can see what intangibles are. It’s not as easy as in the Movie Moneyball with Jonah hill’s computer algorithms. The lost that year and billy beaver said and I’m paraphrasing “if you lose the last Game of year, you lose. Or no one remembers who lost the last Game of year.

Keuchel has an average arm at best. But for one year at $7-10M it’s not my money.
Would have loved a Miggy for Thor trade.
Steven Chinwood
“Would have loved a Miggy for Thor trade” That is some funny stuff right there people.. Come-On-Man

lol not only are you trying hindsight 20/20 you picked Syndergaard out of all pitchers to trade for? You know that the Padres were interested in Andujar right? If the Yankees couldve landed Thor they couldve gotten Paddack. But this whole thing is stupid anyway because no one saw the Andujar injury coming and no one saw Urshela playing as well as he has in his absence
emac22
Non of which makes anything he said wrong.
I swear! half the guys on this board will grow up and spend their days driving 55 in the fast lane to make sure no one speeds.
It’s ok to have an original thought and share it. Constant crying about people’s opinions is getting really lame.
Begamin
“crying about people’s opinions is getting really lame”… as he cries about someones opinion
hindsight 20/20 is stupid, its one waste of breath to make hindsight 20/20 statements and its an even bigger waste of breathe to defend them
ullnvrknw
I said all spring training to trade the one year wonder Andujar! Warned everyone the sophomore slump was coming and he didn’t even have the defense to carry him.
Begamin
He had a labrum tear, not a sophomore slump.

Someone in Yankee universe is regretting that Gio release.
